  • How can digital public infrastructure truly work for women and girls? A new report by UN Women highlights something critical: digital systems are expanding rapidly—but they are not automatically inclusive. Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)—like digital ID, payments, and data exchange—has huge potential to improve access to essential services. But without intentional design, it risks reinforcing existing inequalities. What stood out to us is the emphasis on a life-cycle approach—ensuring that systems work for women and girls from birth registration through to later life, and across all the services they rely on. The report shares a clear call to action: - Invest at scale in gender-inclusive digital systems - Design with women and girls, not just for them - Use gender-disaggregated data to understand real impact These aren’t just “nice-to-haves”—they’re essential if we want digital transformation to be equitable. Too often, technology is seen as neutral. But in reality, it reflects the biases (and blind spots) of how it’s built. If we want inclusive outcomes, inclusion has to be intentional from day one. For anyone working in digital government, global development, or technology—this is a must-read: 👉 https://lnkd.in/gp8mmrGn #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #GenderEquality #TechForGood #DigitalInclusion #GovTech #OpenCRVS

  • Residence Registration in OpenCRVS: a new functionality co-created with the Somalia Civil Registration General Directorate. This system will provide citizens with official proof of address, thereby enabling the country to improve its planning for social development strategies. 🔍Problem-space: Political challenges caused records and infrastructure to collapse, creating barriers for administration with no visibility about the country’s population and their needs. 🛠️How we tackled the problem (our methodology): We conducted a series of co-creation workshops to understand the current local challenges and map out the ideal information architecture. 🏆Solution and/or impact created: Residence registration via #OpenCRVS provides citizens with official proof of address and increases population visibility. We have officially launched in The Cook Islands 🇨🇰 The Cook Islands in partnership with OpenCRVS is stepping into a digital-first registry. The launch of Te Reinga Ora’anga (The Stages of Life) modernises the nation's Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system. The new open-source, digital platform for civil registration was publicly launched by the country on March 3rd. The platform's goal is to guarantee that every life event is recorded accurately, securely, and promptly. Moving from manual, paper-based processes to a single, centralised digital registry means faster certificate issuance, reduced duplication, and real-time reporting. A true team effort and a great partnership. Thanks to everyone who made it possible 🎉 This strong step forward for CRVS in the Pacific was funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Data for Health Initiative and coordinated by Pacific Community SPC. #TeReingaOra’anga #OpenCRVS #CivilRegistration #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #Pacific #GovTech #PacificStats #PacificData #CRVS Shez Farooq, Alta Nel, Jeff Montgomery, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Pacific Community-SPC

  • Last week our OpenCRVS team attended Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP) Connect in Rabat, Morocco 🇲🇦  – a great opportunity to connect with partners, governments and the wider Digital Public Infrastructure community, share progress, and explore how open, interoperable systems are enabling countries to accelerate inclusive digital transformation. Our CEO and co-founder Edward Duffus shares a few key reflections from the event: 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: OpenCRVS highlighted how Verifiable Credentials (VCs) can transform civil registration systems. Discussions showed strong agreement that VCs are a more secure, reliable, portable, and citizen-centric alternative to paper certificates, modernizing services and enhancing access and trust. 𝗗𝗣𝗚 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺: We were encouraged by the growing momentum within the informal DPG Collaborative — including OpenCRVS, Open Function (OpenFn), OpenSPP, DHIS2 and the Mifos Initiative — as these systems increasingly work together as complementary building blocks of Digital Public Infrastructure. During the Digital Convergence Initiative session, we demonstrated real end-to-end use cases, including: Birth registration in OpenCRVS with authentication of parents using eSignet Creation of a unique identifier in MOSIP Enrolment in social protection programmes using an OpenCRVS-issued VC or standards-based search APIs via OpenG2P and OpenSPP The Collaborative is becoming more coordinated, with a shared ambition to strengthen alignment and collaboration going forward. 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Together with MOSIP, we hosted a session on implementation safeguarding. While Digital Public Goods are flexible and powerful, implementation and configuration choices carry real implications. There is a shared responsibility across the ecosystem to provide clear guidance, promote best practices, and ensure systems are designed to protect citizens and uphold trust. 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: The unconference format created space for meaningful, self-organised discussions. These sessions enabled deep dives across topics, including the formation of a #DPG working group focused on staying aligned around rapid developments in #AI. Conclusion: High-quality Digital Public Goods, deployable as Digital Public Infrastructure, are increasingly becoming a practical reality. Across the community, there is strong momentum toward faster and safer deployments in 2026 — supporting digital transformation at greater scale, with stronger inclusion and greater value for citizens. Some key reflections from MOSIP-Connect in Rabat, Morocco last week: 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 • OpenCRVS demonstrated how Verifiable Credentials (VCs) can transform civil registration globally • Strong consensus that VCs are a more secure, reliable, portable and citizen-centric alternative to standard paper certificates 𝗗𝗣𝗚 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 • Active discussions within the informal DPG Collaborative: OpenCRVS, Open Function (OpenFn), OpenSPP, DHIS2 and Mifos Initiative • These systems together form building blocks of DPI and already support true end-to-end use cases. As demonstrated in the Digital Convergence Initiative session, we saw: --> Birth registration in OpenCRVS with authentication of parents using eSignet --> Creation of a unique identifier in Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP) --> Enrolment in social protection programmes using the OpenCRVS-issued VC or standards-based search API (OpenG2P and OpenSPP) • The Collaborative is becoming more organised and intends to increasingly act as a coordinated group 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 • OpenCRVS and MOSIP ran a session on implementation safeguarding • DPGs are flexible and powerful, but design choices carry real risks • Implementers must understand the ramifications of configuration choices • DPGs have a responsibility to provide clear guidance and best practice to safeguard citizens and put them first 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 • The unconference format was a real highlight • Structured “coffee break” sessions enabled self-organising, deep discussions • DPG representatives formed a working group to stay on top of rapid AI developments High-quality Digital Public Goods, rapidly deployable as Digital Public Infrastructure, are fast becoming a practical reality. DPGs, implementers and countries are all looking ahead to faster, safer deployments in 2026 – leading to true digital transformation at greater scale, greater inclusion, and greater value for citizens.
