The 2026 Conference of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, organized together with the Leibniz Association and the Helmholtz Open Science Office, is inviting 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐬, 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐬. We are looking for experiences, lessons learned, and reflections on both successes and setbacks related to the adoption and use of open research information across different institutional, national, regional, and international contexts. This year's conference will explore how policy and practice can reinforce one another in advancing the transition to open research information. What does “competitiveness” really mean for Open Science infrastructures? 🔎In the June Open Science Round-up by the International Science Council, #OpenCitations contributes a reflection on this question. The post by our Communications Director Chiara Di Giambattista highlights OpenCitations’ role in providing free and open citation data and bibliographic metadata and, drawing on the recent community survey, it explores the tensions between openness, usability, and long-term sustainability. 💭Rather than competitiveness driven by commercial scale, it points towards a different model: one based on shared stewardship and openness. 💭 “In the World of Citations, Are We Really Open(Minded), or Stuck in a Comfort Zone?” This is the question at the core of the project presented today by the second-year students of the Digital Humanities and Digital Knowledge Master's programme at Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, during the final workshop of the Open Science course taught by Silvio Peroni. The project builds upon a recently published preprint by Andreose, Heibi, Peroni, and Zilli (2026), which assessed and compared the coverage of Italian publications in OpenCitations across six Italian universities: UNIBO, UNIMI, UNITO, UNIPD, UPO, and SNS.
