Big news for Hunter College High School!  Our Robotics Team 3419, the RoHawks, just took home the NYC FIRST Engineering Award at last weekend’s regional competition at the Washington Heights Armory! This marks the first time since 2017 that our high school team has earned a spot at the Championship—and our 23 talented students are headed to Houston, TX from April 29–May 2 to compete against 600+ teams from around the world. 🌎🤖 We’re also thrilled to celebrate a historic milestone: for the first time in our 16-year program, one of our own—junior Madelyn Bae—won the NYC FIRST Robotics Leadership Award!  We couldn’t be prouder of this incredible team and are deeply grateful to our sponsor, AllianceBernstein, for helping make these opportunities possible. Let’s go, RoHawks! 💜👏  https://lnkd.in/e7AQwuCS

  • Robotics and the environment coming together 🌱🤖 During the second semester of our high school credit-bearing class, students at the NYC FIRST STEM Center in Washington Heights at The New York Public Library are putting their engineering and teamwork skills into action for Earth Day. Using what they’ve learned in robotics, they’re tackling real-world environmental challenges and thinking critically about the future of our planet. From building air quality monitors and Arduino-based fire extinguisher systems to exploring renewable energy through solar-powered city grids, students are applying their skills in meaningful, real-world ways. From problem-solving to innovation, this is what it looks like when STEM learning turns into impact. The next generation isn’t just learning - they’re building solutions. 🌍 🌍 🌍 At NYC FIRST, we’re proud to partner with Con Edison to deliver climate resilience solutions to communities across NYC. #CleanEnergy #CommunityResilience #ConEdison #nycfirst

  • During spring break, NYC FIRST partnered with STEM Matters NYC to deliver a week of hands-on robotics and digital fabrication programming at the NYC FIRST STEM Centers. Throughout the week, students built and programmed robots, explored sensors and attachments, and worked through real engineering challenges. They developed coding strategies, tested and refined their ideas, and engaged in activities such as laser cutting, 3D design, and hands-on science experiments. The program culminated in a final showcase where students presented their projects and demonstrated what they had learned. We are grateful to the educators, mentors, and staff who made this program possible through their guidance and dedication. Thank you as well to STEM Matters NYC for partnering with us to expand access to high quality STEM learning opportunities for NYC students.

  • This one is for all the amazing volunteers! From the NYC FIRST Gotham Regional to the NYC FIRST Regional, and throughout the entire season, our volunteers have been the driving force making it all possible. Event after event, you showed up with time, energy, and care — not just for NYC FIRST, but for every student who stepped into this community that allows young people to explore, build, compete, and grow. Whether you were on the field, behind the scenes, mentoring, organizing, or problem-solving in real time, your impact is felt in every match played and every moment. A special thank you to the volunteers from Bloomberg, who supported the regionals while also continuing to mentor and uplift NYC teams throughout the season. We also want to recognize all of the sponsors and supporters who help make these events possible year after year. To every volunteer who gave their time this season - thank you!!! See you next season 💙🤖 #nycregional2026 #gothamregional2026 #nycfirst

  • NYC FIRST is proud to share this video highlighting our partners at Bloomberg and the energy and impact of the FIRST Robotics Competition NYC Regional. Bloomberg has been a dedicated partner of NYC FIRST, supporting students through mentorship and hands-on learning experiences that extend far beyond the competition floor. Bloomberg volunteers helped power this year's NYC Regional and made it an unforgettable weekend! At this year’s event, we saw that impact in action. Students rose to every challenge with creativity, teamwork, and resilience, guided by mentors who continue to show up year after year alongside NYC FIRST's support. A special shoutout to Team 333 MEGALODONS from John Dewey High School, whose team spirit helps make this community so strong. We’re especially proud to highlight Quincy Douge, who started as a student in the program and is now both a mentor for Team 333 and a member of the NYC FIRST staff. A true full-circle moment and a reflection of the lasting impact of this community. This is bigger than robotics. It’s about building skills, confidence, and pathways for what comes next. We are grateful to partners like Bloomberg and the entire NYC FIRST community for making it all possible. #FIRST #morethanrobots #omgrobots #robotics #STEMeducation #NewYorkCity

  • Proud to share this video from our longtime partner and sponsor Two Sigma highlighting the energy and impact of the NYC FIRST Gotham Regional. This story captures what makes the FIRST community so special - dedicated mentors, curious students, and meaningful industry partnerships coming together to inspire the next generation. A special shout out to Two Sigma's William Clarke for his mentorship and commitment to Team 7272 Envirobots from the High School for Environmental Studies, and to Eliza for representing the student experience so thoughtfully. Grateful as well to Joy Looney for beautifully capturing the spirit of the event, and to the entire team, school, students and community that make this all possible. #FIRST #omgrobots #morethanrobots #STEMeducation #STEMcommunity #STEMecosystem #Robotics #RoboticsEducation #NewYorkCity

“As the CEO of FIRST, I have seen firsthand how experiential STEM learning can change students’ trajectories. Hands-on, team-based learning builds confidence, curiosity, and resilience in ways that traditional classroom instruction alone often cannot.” – FIRST CEO Christopher Moore New NAEP data shows that 78% of U.S. 12th graders are not yet proficient in mathematics. As the future of work becomes increasingly driven by STEM, it’s essential to equip students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed. FIRST CEO Chris Moore discusses how programs like FIRST give young people early, hands-on exposure to real-world problem solving and technical skills that translate across industries, including careers that don’t yet exist. When students learn by doing, they don’t just prepare for the future, they help shape it. Read more via Fast Company: https://hubs.ly/Q0464DG10 #morethanrobots
