Did you know there’s a font designed just for accessibility? Meet Atkinson Hyperlegible, it was created by the Braille Institute of America to help people with low vision read more easily. It’s not a braille font (doesn’t include raised dots), but a print typeface. It even won the Fast Company Innovation Design Award in 2019! Molly Burke recently worked with her publisher to use the font for her memoir, Unseen. What makes it different? ⤵️ Hyperlegible exaggerates letter shapes so you can tell the difference between the letter “o” and the number zero (0), capital “i” vs. lowercase “l”, and the capital letter “b” vs. the number “8”. Other design features include: - Big open shapes - Clear spaces inside letters (known as open counters) - Distinct forms for commonly confused characters But who benefits? People who are blind or low vision, and people with dyslexia or visual processing differences. Clearer text equals easier reading! And the best part? It’s totally free 🎉 You can download it via Google Fonts or from the Braille Institute website. It also happens to be the same font this graphic post is written in. Accessibility isn’t always about doing more. It’s about doing things so that everyone benefits! This font is a small design choice with a big impact. Next time you design something: Try Atkinson Hyperlegible. Because readability is inclusion. Did you know about this font?  Share your thoughts or tag a designer friend in the comments! 👇 Image Description: Document with 9 slides. Each slide has a lime green border. The Blindish Latina logo with bold graphic black outline of an eye is at bottom of all slides. There is a white background behind all of the text on all slides. The text is in black and some emphasized phrases are purple. On the bottom of slides 1 and 7 is an image of Catarina, a light-skinned, Latiné woman with medium length wavy brown hair. She’s wearing a black jumpsuit with a V neck and her hands are on her hips. Slide 1 is the title slide that reads: “Did you know there’s a font designed just for accessibility?” On slide 1 there is clip art of a book with a red cover and a brain inside a light bulb. Slide 2 has clip art of an award ribbon. Slide 3 has a screenshot of advocate & content creator Molly Burke speaking at an event from one of her TikTok videos inside the outline of an iPhone. Slide 5 has a dark purple check mark inside a circle. Slide 6 has clip art of a computer outline in black with a wrench and gear in the center. All text on the slides is in the caption and alt text. #Disability #Accessibility #UniversalDesign

NC SILC is celebrating one of our own amazing Council members. Congratulations Shay Webb for being recognized as one of Wilmington’s 2025 40 under 40. I have been fortunate to know you since you were in high school and knew already then you were going to be a changemaker and accomplish great things! I’m so happy for you! This is well deserved!

From advocacy to research, every step has been guided by faith and community—grateful to join Wilmington Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 40 Under 40. First, I give all thanks to God—whose grace and strength make everything possible. Without Him, none of this would be. A true highlight of the evening was being surprised by my mentor Velva Jenkins —a moment that meant the world to me. I’m also deeply grateful to Julia Blanchette, PhD, RN, BC-ADM, CDCES, FADCES for believing in me and nominating me for this recognition. This moment was made even more meaningful by those who celebrated with me—both near and far—including Reece D. Phillips, MFA , Forrest McFeeters, Ph. D., Belinda McFeeters, Ph.D., Andrew Z. Barnes, Velva Jenkins, Angelina Lisandrelli, and Christopher Neal. Most importantly, I honor my mother, Tia Dobson,MSW, whose unwavering hard work and guidance have been the foundation of every step I take. A heartfelt thank you to Covey and Terracon for adding an extra touch of celebration that made the evening even more memorable for all of us. Congratulations to my newfound leader friends Zachary Brigman , Kevin B. , ShanRieka Cooper, Britney Melvin, Mireya Lupercio, MSW, LCSW, and Lauren Edwards —I’m so excited to grow alongside you. And to the entire 2025 40 Under 40 class, it is a privilege to stand among such visionary leaders shaping the future of our community. ✨ This award is more than a milestone—it’s a reminder that true leadership is about service, advocacy, and lifting others as we climb. #ShayForPatients

October marks Health Literacy Month — a time to reflect on how we communicate health information, and more importantly, how we ensure that people truly understand it. Health literacy is more than just reading a pamphlet or logging into a portal. It’s about making sure patients, families, and communities can use information to make decisions about their health. For those living with chronic conditions like type 1 diabetes, clear communication can mean the difference between thriving and feeling left behind. As someone who has lived with T1D since childhood and now works in clinical research and patient advocacy, I’ve seen how gaps in understanding can create barriers. I’ve also seen how plain language, culturally relevant resources, and trust can break those barriers down. This month, I’ll be sharing reflections on health literacy, patient advocacy, and spotlighting incredible voices who are shaping this work. Together, we can push for a healthcare system that communicates with patients, not at them. 👉 How do you define health literacy in your world — as a patient, caregiver, or professional? #EmpowerHealthVoices #VoicesForHealth #ShayForPatients

Thank you to everyone who joined yesterday’s webinar on Strengthening Transit Evacuation Plans! This session highlighted that preparedness is complex, especially when it comes to disability, and cannot be addressed with a single generic approach. Yet the discussion made clear that preparedness is possible. We hope you left with strategies and ideas for improving transit evacuation access and outcomes for people with disabilities in your communities. June Isaacson Kailes shared powerful insights liked the concept of learned helplessness and introduced the “4 Stages of Disaster Denial,” a concept developed by Eric Holdeman, Director of Emergency Management for Seattle’s King County. These stages from “It won’t happen here” to “There is nothing I could have done anyway” capture the mindsets that often delay action and remind us why proactive planning matters. A huge thank you to June Isaacson Kailes, The Partnership, and to everyone who participated for helping advance inclusive and effective transit evacuation planning. ID: A light gray background displays the title “4 Stages of Disaster Denial.” Four horizontal colored bars are numbered 1 through 4 and contain bold white text: 1. Blue bar: “It won’t happen here. ”2. Red bar: “Even if it happens here, it won’t happen to me.” 3. Yellow bar: “Even if it happens to me, it won’t be that bad.” 4. Gray bar: “Even if it’s that bad, there is nothing I could have done about it anyway.”
