  • 🔬 Modulight Spotlights: Laser-Sharp Research – April 2026 We’re excited to highlight new work from Naoya Kondo and the team at Kansai Medical University, Japan. Their study presents a cancer cell-targeted photoimmunotherapy using an IR700 photoabsorber conjugated with a bicyclic peptide. By moving to a small peptide format instead of antibodies, this approach may enable faster drug clearance and reduced manufacturing cost—advancing beyond conventional antibody-based photoimmunotherapies in clinical use. Key findings: ✨ Strong, selective binding to cancer cells ✨ Rapid membrane blebbing and cell death upon activation ✨ Efficient tumor accumulation ✨ Significant tumor growth suppression after irradiation Activated with 689 nm laser light, including treatment using the ML7710 medical laser, the compound demonstrated strong therapeutic potential. Process consistency depends on stable optical conditions: power stability, beam quality, and spectral control all influence repeatability. This is where a system-level approach becomes non-negotiable.     Just a few nanometres can shift your entire measurement. 🟣 Part 1: Rethinking illumination stability. In fluorescence microscopy, excitation stability directly impacts signal quality and reproducibility. A few nanometres of wavelength drift can shift excitation efficiency. Small power fluctuations reduce SNR. Over time, these effects accumulate into inconsistent results. But here’s the real issue: In many systems, the limitation is not the laser source itself. It’s how the light source is integrated and controlled within the system. ⚠️ • Thermal effects • Coupling variations • Control limitations All of these often introduce instability at the system level, even when the source meets its specifications. So the real question becomes: Are we optimizing the right layer of the system? Because improving the source alone does not guarantee stable performance. A system-level approach to illumination starts to change that perspective: not by improving one parameter, but by aligning the entire architecture. 🔬 The ML6600 platform from Modulight Corporation reflects this approach, enabling precise control, stability, and system-level integration.     Hei network, Recently me and my students had a company visit to the headquarters of Modulight Corporation, located in Tampereen kaupunki - City of Tampere. It was a great opportunity to extend the course "menu" and learn more on laser applications in medicine from one of the leaders in the field! It is always good to go beyond the coursebook and get in contact with people having really hands-on expierience with such an emerging application of laser technologies. Always learning, always improving. I am gratful to Mircea Guina, Kati Reiman and Seppo Orsila for organising such an inspiring visit!
