Living by the Canal How can a former industrial site become an integrated part of the city? The transformation of the former gelatine factory introduces a mixed-use residential neighbourhood that reconnects the site with its surroundings while building on local identity. The project is developed in collaboration with A2O architects and OMGEVING landscape. The masterplan establishes a clear spatial gradient. Toward the existing neighbourhood, the development presents itself as green and low-density, with urban villas set within a park-like environment. Moving toward the canal, building heights gradually increase, creating a stronger urban edge and activating the waterfront. A network of green connections links the inner neighbourhood to the canal, structuring a sequence of public spaces and “Haventuinen” that support everyday use and social interaction. The public realm balances openness and definition, creating a smooth transition between public and private space. Diverse housing typologies, maker spaces, and community functions are integrated within a cohesive framework, rooted in local context and materiality. The result is a neighbourhood that combines density with livability, shaping a new destination along the canal. Urban continuity as foundation. Public space as connector. #MLAplus #Hasselt #UrbanDesign #MixedUse #Housing #PublicSpace #UrbanRegeneration #CityMaking #architecture #ubandesign

A group of MLA+ colleagues recently visited Zeeland during oyster harvesting season to experience the process firsthand. Beyond their taste, oysters are one of the most sustainable protein sources improving water quality, supporting biodiversity, and requiring no additional feed. Harvesting was done responsibly, with the catch enjoyed fresh on site and nothing wasted. #MLAplus #Zeeland #SustainableFood #BlueEconomy #Biodiversity #CircularSystems

Weaving a new Lihu city with Lishui Culture How can public space, ecology, and culture shape a new urban district? The Xiangmi Library and Park Masterplan rethinks Lihu New City as an integrated public domain, extending beyond the central axis and waterfront to form a continuous and accessible urban landscape. The proposal addresses key challenges of the area through a set of coordinated strategies. Ecological systems and water management are strengthened to improve resilience and environmental performance. Public transport and slow mobility networks are integrated to enhance accessibility and connectivity. At the same time, the plan links cultural programming and health-related industries to create a more active and diverse urban environment. By combining landscape, infrastructure, and program, the project establishes a framework where public space supports both everyday life and long-term urban development. Open and flexible environments encourage interaction between people, nature, and economic activity. The result is a green, accessible, and resilient urban district where culture and ecology form the foundation for future growth. Public space as system. Landscape as urban structure. #MLAplus #Shenzhen #UrbanDesign #PublicSpace #LandscapeUrbanism #BlueGreenInfrastructure #CityMaking #FutureCities #architecture_view #urbandesign #urbanism

Courtyard Living in Berlin-Lichtenberg A new mixed-use residential district in the northeast of Berlin, developed in collaboration with Atelier Loidl Landschaftsarchitekten, establishes a coherent urban framework combining housing, education, and local amenities. How can a dense residential district provide both urban intensity and everyday comfort? The proposal builds on the spatial logic of traditional Berlin courtyard blocks, reinterpreted to respond to contemporary challenges particularly the site’s noise conditions. Perimeter blocks form a protective edge, creating calm, green interiors where a network of courtyards, squares, and gardens supports both collective and more intimate uses. Clear block structures define recognizable addresses, while openings along the edges connect the neighborhood to its surroundings. Semi-public courtyards encourage social interaction, while smaller garden courts provide quieter spaces for everyday living. By integrating housing, public space, and local functions within one framework, the project creates a balanced urban environment where density, identity, and livability reinforce one another. Urban form as protection. Courtyards as everyday living space. #MLAplus #Berlin #UrbanDesign #Housing #MixedUse #PublicSpace #CityMaking #ResidentialDesign #architecture

Zhuangpu : Keystone for Future Life How can a new urban district connect ecology, productivity, and everyday life within one coherent system? Developed in collaboration with UPDIS, Zhuangpu is positioned at a strategic hinge in Wenzhou between mountains, the Ou River, and surrounding wetland systems. The project redefines this condition as an opportunity to move beyond conventional growth models and support a transition toward an innovation-driven and landscape-integrated urban future. The masterplan introduces a multidimensional framework built on three complementary strategies. Ecological corridors connect the riverfront with southern landscape systems, bringing biodiversity and blue–green infrastructure into the urban fabric. A layered mobility and productivity network enables new industries and urban programs to overlap and reinforce one another. At the neighborhood scale, a super-block structure organizes active edges and quieter inner zones, supporting a more inclusive and human-scaled environment. These strategies are translated into distinct character areas from a reactivated art and market district to a gateway node that defines a new metropolitan identity, and a park-oriented residential area structured around transit and landscape. Zhuangpu is envisioned as a connected urban system where city and nature operate together, supporting long-term resilience and new forms of urban life. City and landscape as one system. Connectivity as a foundation for future growth. #MLAplus #UrbanDesign #Wenzhou #FutureCities #BlueGreenInfrastructure #TransitOrientedDevelopment #UrbanInnovation #CitySystems #urbandesign #architecture
