For years, Johanne Yordan’s headaches were dismissed as migraines. She knew something wasn’t right and kept pushing for answers. When imaging revealed a slow-growing lesion on her brain, she sought a second opinion. Johanne met with Neurosurgeon Omar Arnaout, MD, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and together they decided on surgery to remove it. Her care team brought together specialists from across Mass General Brigham, including Alan Workman, MD, an ENT surgeon at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. As an artist, Johanne shared what mattered most to her: painting and playing instruments, like the drums and ukulele. Her care team took the time to understand who she was beyond her diagnosis, even exploring her work to better support her. That’s when she knew she was in the right place. "Every person that took care of me from start to finish was wonderful," she says. After surgery, she steadily rebuilt her strength alongside her husband, walking first around the hospital floor then through Boston. Today, Johanne continues routine follow-up care and remains closely connected to her care team. Her experience also shaped her art, which is now inspired by the city that cared for her. “Learn to listen to yourself, do your research and ask questions,” says Johanne. "I am so grateful for Mass General Brigham."

A routine chest scan performed by her cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital saved Vicky Titcomb’s life. The scan revealed pancreatic cancer before she had any symptoms, making it possible for her to receive the most effective treatment. In addition to chemotherapy and radiation, Vicky underwent a robotic Whipple procedure and received advanced care from a multidisciplinary team at the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute. “Everyone showed up for me, every day,” she says of her care team. Today, Vicky is back to running her family’s bookshop, playing with her grandson and looking ahead with hope.

Adam Howitt and his wife, Melissa, were going about their everyday lives with their two sets of twins when Adam began noticing subtle changes just before he turned 50. At first, he couldn't tie his tie. Then he started having difficulty with his handwriting and word recall. After expressing his concerns to his primary care doctor, he was referred to neurologist Monroe Butler, MD, PhD, at Mass General Brigham. Adam was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and began receiving lecanemab, an antibody that targets beta amyloid plaques in the brain. The treatment includes hour-long infusions every other week for at least a year. Since going on lecanemab, Adam has seen the progression of the disease slow down. "I'm hopeful that this first step is going to be quickly followed by more breakthroughs in the AD space," says Dr. Butler. Today, Adam’s optimism, combined with his response to treatment, has allowed him and his family to travel, including a recent trip to Paris. #ENDALZ #EndAlzheimers
