A production limitation. A substantial upstream contribution. A better MariaDB Server for everyone. The platform team at Headout encountered inefficiencies around temporary tables and the HEAP, or MEMORY, storage engine. Arcadiy Ivanov, working through Karellen, Inc., turned those real-world requirements into a major contribution for MariaDB 13.1: support for BLOB, TEXT, JSON and GEOMETRY columns in HEAP. This means more temporary tables can remain in memory instead of falling back to disk simply because they contain variable-length data. The improvement benefits queries using GROUP BY, DISTINCT, UNION, subqueries and CTEs, as well as metadata and instrumentation workloads. This is open source engineering at its best: find a limitation in production, solve it properly upstream, and create lasting value for the entire ecosystem. Thank you to Arcadiy Ivanov, Karellen, Inc. and the Headout platform team. Supporting continuity and open collaboration in the MariaDB ecosystem!
About us
The MariaDB database strives to be the logical choice for database professionals looking for a robust, scalable, and reliable SQL server. To accomplish this, a large global community of users and developers work together in the true spirit of Free and open source software, and release software in a manner that balances predictability with reliability. The MariaDB Foundation is a global non-profit established to promote, protect, and advance the codebase, community, and ecosystem of the free and open source MariaDB database. It does not own the trademark "MariaDB" which is the property of MariaDB Corporation.

Red Hat OpenShift is a great platform for deploying database workloads. Red Hat Developer has published a walkthrough using HammerDB to test MariaDB, PostgreSQL and SQL Server on OpenShift Virtualization. That is the right combination: OpenShift for running and managing the database environment, HammerDB for putting it under repeatable load and measuring the result. A practical example of database performance testing on modern infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/e_8ZVDRm #HammerDB #RedHat #OpenShift #OpenShiftVirtualization #DatabasePerformance #PostgreSQL #MariaDB #SQLServer

We are pleased to announce that Nextcloud has renewed its Silver sponsorship of MariaDB Foundation for another year. Nextcloud and MariaDB are widely used together by organisations seeking greater control over their data and infrastructure. Over the past year, our collaboration has grown through the Privacy-First Solution Stack, which brings together Nextcloud, Passbolt and MariaDB Server in a practical open-source architecture for secure collaboration, password management and data storage. As Frank Karlitschek, founder and CEO of Nextcloud, puts it: digital sovereignty means having real freedom of choice, being able to understand, operate and change the technology your organisation depends on. That is exactly what a strong open-source ecosystem makes possible. Thank you to Nextcloud for its continued support and commitment to building credible, sovereign alternatives to proprietary platforms. Sometimes the clearest access rule is simply: yes, but not that. MariaDB 13.1 Preview introduces DENY, also known as negative grants. It allows DBAs to grant broad access while explicitly blocking specific exceptions, such as a sensitive table or an individual privilege inherited through a role. The result is access control that is easier to understand, audit and maintain, without replacing the principle of least privilege. MariaDB 13.1 is a preview release, so now is the time to test DENY against real-world access-control scenarios and share feedback with the engineering team. The new DuckDB storage engine for MariaDB is already inviting hands-on testing and exploration across the community. In this new post, Amrendra Kumar shares practical lessons from his performance assessment, including: • configuring DuckDB within MariaDB • monitoring transactions, memory use and temporary storage • examining buffer-manager caching • profiling memory growth with Heaptrack • useful resources for running further benchmarks A valuable technical companion for anyone beginning to experiment with analytical workloads using DuckDB and MariaDB. Have you ever seen Sea Lion quacking? Bellow is a life footage of a decent #MariaDB mascot specimen is trying to speak Duck language after its first lesson. This is me speaking at #DuckCon about #DuckDB storage language for #MariaDB. And yes there are performance numbers that shows that persistent #DuckDB outperforms #ClickHouse running concurrency ClickBench test. #OLAP #analytics https://lnkd.in/eMDjbkjw

DuckDB storage engine is x1.8 faster than ClickHouse on ClickBench concurrency. #mariadb #duckdb #performance
Here are some performance-related slides from #DuckCon about #DuckDB Storage Engine for #MariaDB that outperforms #ClickHouse 1.8x on ClickBench concurrency test. This was a really smooth and pleasant conference experience. Thank you #DuckLabs and #MotherDuck for this! Special thanks to Gábor Szárnyas for the organization. I appreciate Amrendra Kumar and Aleksei Bukhalov's help with the tests and the statistics. Thank you #Hetzner for the hardware for testing! #analytics
