🇪🇺 Young leaders across Europe are calling for stronger and more concrete safeguards for our democracies. A month ago, 35 Young Elected Politicians from 14 EU Member States and Ukraine met in Brussels for the 2026 Winter School programme to discuss citizen engagement, local democracy, and the challenges facing democratic systems. Stephen De Ron reminded us that citizen participation and democratic protection must be real, not rhetorical. Bridget Afor added that trust grows only through meaningful participation and not just “symbolic events.” 🏛️These insights strongly align with Make’s mission to deepen democratic engagement, reflected in initiatives such as the European Young Citizens’ Assembly on Pollinators and the national consultation on compulsory service in Switzerland. The regional level remains essential for democratic participation. Across Europe, Make.org supports regions that want to anchor public policy in broad, structured and evidence‑based citizen input. 🌟 Some highlights on our work on regional level: 🇫🇷 In France, the Île‑de‑France region is using large‑scale consultations to shape regional strategies on ageing and women’s health, while the Brittany region has reoriented territorial investment priorities based on citizen expectations. 🇩🇪 In Germany, Berlin, North Rhine‑Westphalia and Baden‑Württemberg have each mobilised residents to inform regional action, from local follow‑up to the Conference on the Future of Europe to defining the future of the justice system. 🇨🇿 In some regions of Czech Republic and Bavaria, young people co‑created cross‑border recommendations for a strong and sustainable Europe. Last Friday, I had the opportunity to take part in the second (online) session of the European Citizens’ Panel on Preparedness. I presented the results gathered through the Citizens’ Engagement Platform, joining Mark Hessellund Beanland (Democracy x) and Christiane Dienel (nexus - Institut für Kooperationsmanagement u. interdisziplinäre Forschung) in the studio. I shared the key findings from the contributions collected so far, highlighting the 8 dimensions and 13 citizens’ topics that emerged from the analysis. These insights feed into the three-session panel process, where participants provide input for the implementation of the EU Preparedness Union Strategy. Public actors may often ask themselves if it is better to engage citizens through panels or digital participation platforms. Why choose when you can combine deliberative depth and participatory scale!
