Our next Spotlight Sponsor goes to the Center for Heirs Property® (CHP). CHP has been a strong partner and advocate of LiKEN. Through their out-of-state partnership program, they have supported two of LiKEN’s projects: Community Wealth From Healthy Rivers and Forests and the Appalachian Heirs’ Property Center (AHPC). The AHPC as a concept was inspired by CHP’s successful model for securing family land ownership and has been developed, step-by-step, in deep partnership with CHP. During times of rapid change, CHP has stepped up to lend a steadying hand to their partners and we at LiKEN are eternally grateful. When we are celebrating LiKEN, we are also celebrating the partnerships that have made the past 10 years possible! Since 2005, CHP has walked alongside families on the journey to protect what matters most: their land, their legacy, and their future. Born out of the South Carolina Lowcountry, the Center for Heirs’ Property® has grown into a trusted resource for legal education, sustainable land use, and landownership defense — all rooted in justice and community. CHP is a nonprofit on a mission, guided by a simple but powerful belief: every family deserves the security of ownership, the knowledge to protect it, and the opportunity to grow it. Land is more than property, it’s a path to generational wealth, healing, and belonging. #sponsorspotlight #liken10 #liken

As we gear up for our 10th Anniversary Gala this week, we are looking back on the amazing impact LiKEN has had on so many lives and communities. For this momentous #ThrowbackThursday, we wanted to revisit Community Care Coordinator Madison Mooney’s short blog recapping the history of our Community Engagement Coordinators. It’s because of our CECs that LiKEN is able to do the “boots on the ground” work that we do in our communities. Check out the blog here: https://lnkd.in/eZTyPciY For a fresher example, here’s a picture of Madison Mooney in action at our Free Wills Clinic earlier this week in her home of Martin County. The 17 wills we wrote Monday——worth thousands of dollars total——is just one drop in a large bucket of impact she has brought back to her community in her time with LiKEN.

This week, I traveled to Eastern Kentucky to learn about Appalachia’s rich, tragic, and complex history with corporate exploitation, particularly at the hands of the coal industry. Led by members of the Laudato Si Commission, we met with community leaders from across the region, discussing the intersectionality of environmental degradation and poverty. We connected with the Appalachian Citizens' Law Center, Appalshop, Inc, Hemphill Community Center, the Appalachian School of Luthiery, Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, LiKEN Knowledge, Hope in the Mountains and St. Vincent Mission. From helping miners suffering from black lung disease to advocating for robust environmental regulations to providing essential addiction recovery resources, I was inspired by the confidence, perseverance, and cooperation of every group who opened their lives to us. Thank you to Christopher McMahon for pioneering this trip and the Mt. Tabor Benedictines for hosting and guiding our learning experience. As someone who strives to amplify the voices of marginalized communities via research and design, this immersion pilgrimage provided an invaluable opportunity to grapple with the complexities of life in Appalachia.
