Honoring a legacy of kindness. 🧡 Last month, Dr. Harry Maisel, a Lighthouse emeritus board member and a pillar of our community, passed away. Harry embodied the selfless dedication we strive for every day. Our condolences to his family. This National Volunteer Week, we are celebrating First United Methodist Church of Troy and their incredible partnership. Since 2023, a dedicated team has spent every third Monday in our food pantry, contributing nearly 450 lifetime hours (and likely much more!). They have also supported our shelter for years through Host Weeks, making and delivering lunches twice a year. This past December, they adopted our family shelter for the holidays, hosting a party with dinner, gifts, and even transportation for families who needed it. They also welcomed our shelter kids to their vacation bible school this summer. Thank you, First United, for showing up in so many ways, month after month and year after year. During the last few weeks, Lighthouse staff, volunteers, client advocates, and partners have engaged state and federal legislators about Lighthouse's work to end and prevent homelessness, increase access to affordable housing, and address food insecurity. No matter where you live, these issues matter. 🧡 Our CEO Ryan Hertz was in Washington, D.C. this week along with our Board Chair, Jonathan Burleigh, to meet with our federal lawmakers. More than 30 Lighthouse staff members and interns also traveled to Lansing recently for a full day of conversations with Michigan Legislators and their staff. Lighthouse is proud to advocate for the communities we serve. It's one more reflection of our overall community impact. This National Volunteer Week, we are celebrating Chris Hardman. 🧡 Chris first came to Lighthouse years ago with her husband and kids for a family volunteer shift. After retiring, she started coming three days a week, and she hasn't stopped. "I really liked that I could give food to people directly," she says. "And I felt really good that I knew I was making a difference right then and there." Chris has been volunteering with us for about five years total, with the last two years at three days a week. Beyond Lighthouse, she serves as board president of the Oakland County Conservation District, helping neighbors preserve their own backyards. Her philosophy is simple: "If you can, you should. We have a lot of neighbors who are struggling, and I'm not struggling. So it's a good use of my time to help other people." Huel Perkins is a retired, Emmy award winning broadcaster who brought news to Metro Detroit for 32 years. Robin Schwartz is an Emmy award winning storyteller and founder of Robin Schwartz PR. Both have been champions of Lighthouse for years. Huel's wife, Priscilla, was a former Lighthouse staff member, and Robin works hand in hand with our team to share Lighthouse's stories. This National Volunteer Week, we are celebrating Lana LaFortune. 🧡 Lana is a retired social worker who practiced for 32 years, working primarily with the military (including 11 years overseas), at Wayne State, and in substance abuse treatment. Today, she brings that same spirit of service to Lighthouse. She used to volunteer in our pantry and warehouse three to four days a week. While she has slowed down with the recent influx of new volunteers, she still spends time at Lighthouse and organizes a food drive in her subdivision to benefit our pantry. Lana's dedication reminds us that once a social worker, always a social worker. She continues to show up for her neighbors in need.
