Today, Urban One joins the nation in celebrating Juneteenth—a profound marker of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Black community. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that the news of liberation finally reached enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas. Juneteenth represents both the realization of a delayed promise and the undeniable strength of a people who persevered. For over 45 years, Urban One, Inc.'s mission has been to be the authentic voice of Black America. We don't just report on our culture; we live it, protect it, and champion it. Today is a reminder of why our voice matters—to tell our stories, honor our history, and drive the ongoing journey toward true equity and economic empowerment. Urban One, Inc. is proud to unveil the Power4+ HBCU Esports League — the official name for the historic, fee-free national collegiate esports competition launched in partnership with PlayVS/PlayVS College League. 25 HBCUs have already committed to the inaugural season launching February 2027, including Bowie State University, Clark Atlanta University, Grambling State University, and Howard University. This three-year league will expand access, visibility, and career pathways for Black students in gaming, tech, and media while offering brands a powerful, authentic way to engage a highly influential audience. An HBCU advisory committee will finalize league structure and game titles this summer, with invitational competitions beginning this fall. Together with PlayVS, Urban One is building a long-term pipeline from competition to careers for the next generation of Black gamers, creators, and tech professionals.
