Earth Day 2026: Powering Circular Plastics with Materials Science and Engineering Innovation ♻️ And one of the most underestimated engineering challenges of our time.   Today, on Earth Day (22nd April), we look beyond sustainability slogans and focus on what truly enables circular plastics in practice: materials science, process control, and industrial implementation. At Interzero Plastics Innovations, our Competence Center for Recycled Plastics supports customers in turning sustainability targets into robust, scalable recycling solutions.   Our foundation is polymer science and materials chemistry - including molecular structure, degradation mechanisms, phase behavior, and thermodynamics/kinetics of polymer transformation.   Because recyclate performance is defined long before the recycling step at - the molecular level. In collaboration with industry partners, we develop and optimize: ♻️ mechanical and chemical recycling routes ♻️ feedstock qualification and upgrading ♻️ process design and stabilization ♻️ advanced material characterization   Key barriers remain fundamentally chemical: chain scission, oxidation, additive interactions, phase separation, and contamination - all directly affecting recyclate quality and value.   We treat recyclability not as a material property, but as a system outcome shaped by history, processing, and application demands.   Real circularity requires integration of material science, engineering, and system-level thinking - not isolated optimization. Electronic devices are being replaced faster than ever. But that doesn't mean they've lost their value. Discarded IT equipment is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in Europe. Interzero gives devices a second life. We refurbish, reuse and responsibly recycle IT equipment. By doing so, we extend product lifecycles, recover valuable materials and keep electronics out of landfills. A study conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT last year highlights the real impact of these efforts. Depending on the type of device, it shows that refurbishment and reuse can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by between 18% and 37%. We are celebrating 35 years of zero waste solutions. For us, 35 years of experience is not a reason to stand still, but an incentive to keep driving forward the transition to a resource-efficient circular economy together with our partners. Battery transport regulations have changed significantly, and companies that ship or handle batteries need to take note. 🔋 The #ADR, Europe's framework for transporting dangerous goods by road, was updated recently with new rules specifically for sodium-ion batteries, which are rapidly gaining ground as an alternative to lithium-ion. They now have their own classification numbers, which means transport documents, labelling, and internal procedures all need updating accordingly. There is also a stricter regime for damaged or defective batteries. These can no longer simply be handed to any carrier. Only specialist dangerous goods transporters are permitted, with specific documentation required at every step. Looking further ahead, the EU is introducing a Digital #BatteryPassport by February 2027. Think of it as a verifiable digital ID for every battery, covering materials, carbon footprint, and full lifecycle data. The supporting infrastructure launches as early as July 2026, so preparation needs to start now. 💡 The compliance bar has been raised across the board, from how batteries are packaged and labelled to how they are documented and transported. Waiting for an audit or an incident to force a review is a costly approach.

What drives a company’s choice when selecting a new packaging material? This is exactly the question Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is designed to answer, with data.   LCA is an internationally standardized methodology (ISO 14040 & 14044) that evaluates and quantifies the environmental impact of a product, process, or service across its entire life cycle: from raw material extraction to production, use, and end-of-life. In the packaging sector, it has become an essential tool for informed decision-making.   An LCA typically includes: • Goal & scope definition • Life cycle inventory (data collection on energy, water, etc.) • Impact assessment (e.g. CO₂ emissions, energy demand, water footprint) • Interpretation of results to identify improvement areas   In a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape, with PPWR requiring increasingly precise and documented environmental data, LCA is a strategic asset. The upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR) is not only reshaping producer obligations, it is also significantly increasing the responsibilities of online marketplaces. 💻 What does this mean in practice? Marketplaces are expected to take on stricter control obligations, including verifying whether sellers comply with national #EPR and packaging registration requirements. This could mean: 💡 No valid registration number, no access to the platform 💡 Listings being restricted or removed 💡 Increased scrutiny for cross-border sellers In some EU countries, this is already being actively implemented. For companies selling packaged goods to end consumers across the EU, this creates a new level of complexity. Regulatory requirements remain national, while enforcement increasingly happens at platform level. Businesses that proactively ensure their registrations and reporting obligations are in place will maintain market access and build trust with platforms and customers alike. Those who do not risk losing visibility or the ability to sell altogether.
