Dr. Sandra Newell has been appointed to the position of Deputy Director for the Department of War (DoW) High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP), which is headquartered at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). In this role, Newell will lead the strategic planning and programmatic oversight essential to the HPCMP mission. This involves guiding its five supercomputing resource centers across the Army, Air Force and Navy, in addition to its networking, security and software divisions. She will also spearhead the planning and execution of strategic initiatives, provide programmatic leadership on advanced computing technology and ensure the program maintains a holistic, enterprise-wide view of all activities that support national security objectives. Newell is a strategic and results-oriented senior leader, with more than 20 years of dedicated experience within the DoW research and development enterprise. Her career at ERDC, which began in 2004 as a research biologist, has included a role as Director of Business Intelligence and serving as the ERDC liaison to Army Futures Command and the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology. She holds a doctorate in ecosystem health from the University of New Brunswick and a master's degree in national resource strategy from the National Defense University.
