Updates

  • Proof that even when you do everything right, the algorithm can still find a reason to say 'No.' We’re officially in the era of moderated review replies and API-accessible customer photos. Michel breaks down what this means for your 2026 strategy. Read the full post to see why a polite thank-you note ended up in the digital trash can.

In the world of Local SEO, we often talk about Google as a "set and forget" platform. But two massive updates in the Google Business Profile API suggest a fundamental shift in how Google manages the conversation between brands and customers. Our technical team just caught a "double scoop" in the latest release. Here is what’s changing, and what is coming soon to the GMBapi.com dashboard: 1. Review Replies: For years, your reply was live the second you hit send. No longer. Google has introduced ReviewReplyState, meaning every reply is now moderated: PENDING: Google is screening your content. REJECTED: Google has blocked your reply. APPROVED: You’re cleared for public view. We just saw this in action. A brand sent a perfectly professional Dutch reply: "Beste Dick, wat fijn om te horen..." The result? Rejected. Google’s automated profanity filter flagged the reviewer’s legal name. Without API visibility, you’d never even know it happened. (Sorry, Dick, Google’s AI hasn't quite mastered the nuances of Dutch names yet 😉). 2. Review Media: As of April 20th, customer-uploaded images are finally accessible via the API. You’ll soon be able to see exactly what your customers are photographing in real-time, directly within your GMBapi.com workflow. Bonus: Scheduled Recurring Posts: Google finally added Recurrence Info. You can now automate those "Weekly Specials" or "Monday Margarita" posts once and let the API do the heavy lifting. The GMBapi.com Edge: We don't just read the change logs; we build them. Gergan and our dev team are currently loading these features into the dashboard. We are on track to be the first platform to offer integrated image viewing and real-time reply moderation status. Don't wait for the other guys to catch up. Get ahead of the curve. • Exciting development in Google Maps!

Google has officially launched Ask Maps. It’s a Gemini-powered conversational experience that allows users to ask complex, nuanced questions like: “Where can I work on my laptop and also have a gluten-free sandwich?” “Where’s a quiet place for a client lunch with fast Wi-Fi and a vegan menu?” Users no longer have to dig through dozens of reviews or cross-reference 10 different tabs. They just ask. Google does the reasoning. The Catch for Businesses: A "filled-out" profile isn't enough anymore. Ask Maps doesn't just look at your business name; it synthesises: Review Sentiment: What do people actually say about your "vibe"? Visual Proof: Do your photos confirm the existence of that "outdoor patio"? Data Coherence: Does your website, LinkedIn, and GBP tell the same story? In this new era, the winner isn't the one with the most keywords. It’s the business with the most coherent identity across every channel Google touches. Ask Maps is already live in the U.S. and India, but it will likely arrive in Europe and the UK imminently. Businesses that wait for the rollout to fix their data will already be months behind their competitors. If your data is thin, your business is functionally invisible to the AI. At GMBapi.com, we help you monitor and manage your data to ensure your business stays ahead of the curve.

  • New look. Same mission. We’ve officially refreshed GMBapi.com. We’ve traded the old palette for a high-velocity interface designed for multi-location teams. It’s cleaner, faster, and built to get you in and out of your dashboard in record time. Because you should spend your time winning the Map Pack, not fighting your software.

Big Updates at GMBapi.com Managing multi-location brands at scale shouldn't feel like a manual chore. In 2026, your tools should do the heavy lifting so you can focus on strategy. We’ve just rolled out our most significant platform update yet, focusing on a cleaner workspace, deeper market intelligence, and smarter AI automation. What's new in the dashboard: ✅ A Focused Workspace: We’ve moved to a refined white and blue interface. It’s designed to reduce visual noise, letting your location data take centre stage. ✅ Safety First: Edits are now highlighted in blue before you hit save, with new "Navigation Guards" to prevent losing unsaved changes. ✅ Market Intelligence 2.0: Competitor scans now track up to Position 60. We’ve redefined "Visibility" to focus on the Top 5 results, the real conversion zone. ✅ Custom AI Review Logic: You now have granular control over the AI Review Assistant. Use custom prompts and dynamic variables (Name, Location, Rating) to maintain a human touch at scale. The Result: A faster, more intuitive workflow that helps you manage local marketing smarter, not harder. Whether you’re a franchise group or an agency, these updates are designed to give you back your most valuable asset: Time. Log in today to explore the new interface - Link in the comments.

The most recent US data (second half of Jan '25 vs Jan '26) on the changing local SERPs from 5k-10k US based Google Business Profiles confirms what other like Claudia Tomina, Joy Hawkins and Matt McGee have posted about as well. GBP Website Clicks and Calls: Minus 21,5% y/y GBP Business Direction Requests: Plus 22% y/y GBP Desktop Search Impressions: No real impact - roughly the same GBP Mobile Search Impressions: Minus 24% y/y GBP Desktop Maps Impressions: Minus 32% y/y GBP Mobile Maps Impressions is a useless metric as long as you have varying degrees of Google Ads usage. We would recommend everyone to take the below data (+35% y/y) on that with a bit of salt. We asked #Google to allow us to add two segments for GBP impression data: AI Mode (Desktop/Mobile) and Google Ads (Desktop/Mobile). That would really help.

Are you a US based business and is your phone quiet despite your rankings? It’s the nightmare scenario for any local business: You log into your rank tracker and see you’re still ranking well, but your phone isn't ringing and your GA4 data shows GBP visitors are plummeting. If this sounds familiar, you aren’t imagining things. Local SEO in 2026 has shifted from "where you rank" to "where you are allowed to appear". The graph below is missing the last two days of data for January (will be updated in two days), but something is definitely happening in the US. We are seeing business as usual in the European countries (see Dutch data in the blogpost in the first comment). The 2026 Local SEO Reality Check: AI Packs are shrinking real estate: Traditional Map Packs are being replaced by AI packs that often show only text about two businesses, with a potential follow up questions.  Many AI-generated summaries remove the instant "click-to-call" button, adding friction to the customer journey. Google Ads are pushing organic listings out of the Map Pack (when it is allowed to show), and Google is increasingly not showing website and call buttons anymore when an ad is in the Map Pack, transforming the Local Map pack in staggering rate to a "pay to play" spiel. The Rank Tracker blind spot: Most rank trackers can't even "see" these AI packs yet. So you might think you’re winning a race that half your customers aren't even watching anymore.

  • Most local SEO best pratices tells you to focus on the basics. But what happens when you’ve optimised your GBP to the limit and the needle still won't move?

Google doesn't care how many 5-star reviews you have if it hasn’t already decided you’re eligible to rank. Most local SEO strategies focus on the wrong things. You can't optimize for rankings if you haven't cleared the Entity Boundary. Interpretation first, rankings second. You aren’t just competing against other businesses; you are competing against Google’s need for certainty. If the algorithm isn't confident in your identity, you don't exist for that query. In my latest for Search Engine Land, I break down why your primary signals might be working against you: 💡 Eligibility > Ranking: If Google’s NLP parser defines your business name and category as a narrow entity, you are locked out of broad queries regardless of your secondary signals. 💡 The Category Trap: I share a case study where a restaurant was invisible for "Halal" searches despite site-wide optimization. Changing the primary category flipped the grid to #1 overnight. 💡 The Semantic Signal: Your business name and primary category are a unified signal. If they don't align with search intent, Google won't even look at your authority. Stop focusing on rankings. Start thinking about how Google interprets the soul of your business and whether the queries you're chasing are worth the price of admission. #LocalSEO #GoogleBusinessProfile #SEO #GoogleMap

  • Interesting post - small nuggets of highly relevant information showing up near real time from Instagram on GPBs. Have you linked your social media profiles?

Have you noticed this pattern? Instagram posts seem to be influencing Google Local results in near real time. Examples I’ve observed: • Quiz Night post → Google shows “TODAY – Quiz Night” • Burger post → Google shows “TODAY – that exact burger” It strongly suggests that Google is picking up real-time signals from connected Instagram profiles and reflecting them in local search results. Curious to hear if others in local search or hospitality are seeing the same behaviour, and how consistently this shows up across venues and markets. Darren Shaw Mike Blumenthal
