A food system underpinned by fossil fuels is a systemic failure waiting for a spark 🔥 Right now, global agricultural markets are reeling from geopolitical shocks. As energy and fertilizer supply chains break down, it is a stark reminder that industrial food systems are dangerously intertwined with the fossil fuel economy. From the diesel powering tractors to the natural gas used to manufacture synthetic fertilizers, the food sector accounts for an estimated 15% of global fossil fuel use. When these markets experience volatility, it is farmers and consumers who pay the price through lost livelihoods and soaring grocery bills. Phasing out fossil fuels isn't just a climate necessity—it is a requirement for a stable, affordable, and resilient future of food. So, what would a food system completely free of fossil fuels actually look like by 2050? And how do we navigate the trade-offs to get there? In our final episode of the #FuelToFork podcast series (a collaboration between the IPES-Food, and TABLE), we shift from the problem to the solutions. Tune in as experts unpack the actionable steps needed to break our fossil fuel addiction and transition to a resilient, community-led food future. 🎧 Listen to Episode 7: Transitioning to Fossil Free Food: https://lnkd.in/eXkgnwpS 🔗 Find the full podcast series here: https://lnkd.in/eA2XFGkT #FoodSystems #ClimateCrisis #JustTransition #FutureOfFood #FossilFreeFood #Sustainability

What affects the land, affects the sea. Yet, too often, global policies, conservation efforts, and funding streams treat terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems as disconnected.💧 If we want to build true resilience for #PlanetaryHealth, we have to focus on the nexus where life, culture, and food systems meet. More importantly, we need to back the frontline communities who already hold the solutions. This #EarthDay, we are spotlighting our #BeaconsOfHope series—a collection of powerful testimonials proving that community-led action at the land-water nexus works. From Aboriginal communities rebuilding sovereign seafood economies in Australia to First Nations reversing ecological collapse to save wild salmon in Canada, these stories aren't just case studies. They are proven roadmaps for systemic change. They demonstrate that when we invest in Indigenous governance, secure tenure, and sustained advocacy, nature rebounds. Instead of just raising awareness today, let's focus on scaling the solutions that are already healing our planet. ✨ Explore the storytelling gallery and meet the leaders on the frontline: https://lnkd.in/gPGBkTjr #EarthDay2026 #FutureOfFood #AquaticFoods #IndigenousGovernance #SystemsChange

Why are our food supply chains so vulnerable to climate and political crises? 🌾 This past weekend, our Deputy Director, Lauren Baker, joined CBC’s Just Asking with host Saroja Coelho and Tyler McCann (Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute) to tackle one of the most pressing questions facing communities today: why do food prices keep rising, and how can we stop them? As the recent rise in global oil prices has shown, industrial food systems is deeply dependent on fossil fuels. This reliance creates a fragile supply chain where geopolitical shocks and climate crises inevitably lead to skyrocketing costs for consumers. During the interview, Lauren highlights a critical pathway forward: to curb costs and protect food sovereignty, we must transform these systems. By investing in resilient, agroecological, and localized food economies, we can break the cycle of fossil-fuel dependency and build a food system equipped to handle future shocks. 🎧 Listen to the full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/ej84Erhp https://lnkd.in/ej84Erhp #FoodSystems #FoodPrices #FoodSovereignty #Agroecology #FoodSystemsTransformation #FossilFuels

Transforming our #FoodSystems requires us to connect the dots between public health, climate action, and corporate accountability. As our Executive Director, Anna Lappé, highlights below, San Francisco’s landmark lawsuit against #UltraProcessedFoods giants is about more than what is on our plates—it is a critical intervention against the industrial food chain's deep dependence on fossil fuels and agrochemicals. Read her post to explore the hidden costs of #UPFs and why we must ensure our food systems do not become the fossil fuel industry's next escape hatch👇 #FossilFreeFood
San Francisco has sent a massive wake-up call to Big Food—and I am here for it! 🛑 Earlier this year, San Francisco filed the country’s first government lawsuit against food giants over ultra-processed foods (#UPFs). SF City Attorney David Chiu describes the links between UPFs and a "chronic disease pandemic." As we cheer on this move for accountability, we can keep connecting the dots to the bigger picture. We can’t talk about UPFs without discussing the industrial food chain’s dependence on fossil fuels and agrochemicals. They are two sides of the same extractive coin. In this piece for Civil Eats, I describe the largely invisible path from oil to the aisle. Think about a simple bag of potato chips. To make it "hyper-palatable" and artificially cheap, the system creates a heavy carbon footprint: 🌱 Fossil fuels to produce the pesticides & synthetic fertilizers to grow those vast monocultures 🏭 Energy-intensive processing to wash, chop, fry, and season 📦 Plastic packaging (the fossil fuel industry’s favorite escape hatch) to keep it on shelves for months As my brilliant colleague Amanda Jekums wrote, these foods aren’t just processed—they’re designed to be addictive using commodity crops propped up by our own public subsidies. We’re paying for this system many times over: once at the checkout, and again with our health and our climate. The staggering reality: 💰$8 Trillion: The annual hidden cost of diet-related diseases worldwide 🔥15%: The global fossil fuel use driven by our food system—and it’s growing As we move toward green energy in transport, #BigOil is eyeing #fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics as its next big market opportunity. We can’t let our food systems become their next frontier. San Francisco’s lawsuit would be a huge win for transparency and another step toward a whole-food system that prioritizes people and the planet over the bottom line. 📝 Read the full story on why our food system can't be a fossil-fuel escape hatch in Civil Eats: https://lnkd.in/gM5_4AJV 📖 Check out Amanda’s deep dive into why health starts with food: https://lnkd.in/gJbygY7q ⚖️And read more on the landmark lawsuit in The Guardian: https://lnkd.in/gCy5yhQF #UltraProcessedFoods #FossilFreeFood

"On the face of it, this looks like a supply chain issue, but at the core of this crisis lies a truth about many of our food systems around the world: the instability and injustice in the very design of systems so reliant on these fossil fuel inputs for our food." With trade routes through the #StraitofHormuz restricted, the price of urea—a #SyntheticFertilizer derived from natural gas—has spiked by 35%. Because this single corridor accounts for nearly half of the global supply, the World Food Programme projects this disruption could push an additional 45 million people into acute #hunger. In a new op-ed for Climate Home News, our Executive Director Anna Lappé and Lena Luig (Head of International Agricultural Policy at the Heinrich Boll Foundation) unpack why this is not just a temporary supply chain glitch. It is a dangerous design flaw. When 15% of the world's fossil fuels are pumped into industrial food systems—largely to produce synthetic agrochemicals—farmers and consumers are left entirely at the mercy of geopolitical volatility and corporate profiteering. We cannot afford to return to business-as-usual. The only way out of this cycle is to break our dependency on fossil-fueled inputs. By redirecting subsidies toward agroecological approaches and locally sourced bio-fertilizers, we can build a resilient food system grounded in genuine #FoodSovereignty. 📖 Read the full op-ed: https://lnkd.in/gy_fZUYa #FoodSystems #FossilFreeFood #Agroecology #FoodSecurity #FutureOfFood #JustTransition

The Government of Canada announced a $412.9 million renewal of the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative, bringing total investments to protect wild Pacific salmon to nearly $1.1 billion. The goal? Restoring habitat and rebuilding stocks through Indigenous leadership and community-led stewardship. For policymakers and funders looking for a blueprint on how to deploy this capital effectively, the proof of concept already exists. For 30 years, First Nations on the coast of #BritishColumbia have led a masterclass in intergenerational persistence. By combining traditional knowledge, Western science, and direct action, they successfully removed industrial fish farms from the Broughton Archipelago—allowing #WildSalmon to finally rebound. Funding commitments are critical, but they must support the frontline communities stewarding these waters. The Broughton Aquaculture Transition Initiative (BATI) proves that when Indigenous governance leads, systemic recovery follows. 🐟 Dive into "Survival Instead of Extinction" to see what sustained investment in Indigenous leadership achieves: https://lnkd.in/gaqigDBB 📰 Read more about the funding announcement here: https://lnkd.in/gncrZASx #PacificSalmon #IndigenousRights #FutureOfFood #FoodSovereignty #BeaconsOfHope

SF Climate Week is nearly here! Among the many events I’m looking forward to is a special screening of the new documentary, FOOD 2050, on Saturday, April 25. Following premieres at Sundance and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this will be the film’s first private screening in the Bay Area. Narrated and executive produced by Viola Davis, Food 2050 explores one of the defining challenges of our time: how we feed a global population of 10 billion people in a way that is nourishing, regenerative, and equitable. What I love is that the film doesn’t just ask the question; it centers the farmers, communities, and innovators already building that future. After the screening, I’ll join Anna Lappé of Global Alliance for the Future of Food, Danielle Nierenberg of Food Tank, Jose Corona of Agricultural Platform Collective, Kristin Coates of Regenerative California, and Sara Farley of The Rockefeller Foundation to examine a central tension: if the future of food is already here, what will it take to ensure more people, and more communities, can access it? I’m so grateful to be in conversation with this group and to partner with organizations that are helping bring this event to life! This is a free event with limited capacity. Wild salmon are returning to the Broughton Archipelago—after decades of Indigenous leadership, organizing, and direct action 🇨🇦🐟 First Nations in coastal British Columbia challenged industrial aquaculture, defended their waters, and secured the closure of salmon farms that were driving ecological decline. This story shows what becomes possible when Indigenous governance is recognized, when science and traditional knowledge align, and when communities have the resources to sustain long-term struggle. For philanthropy, the message is clear: lasting change depends on backing community-led efforts over the long term.
