  • Last week, our Senior Director, Clint Arhelger attended eMerge Americas, representing FIU's commitment to advancing technology across public and industry sectors. As part of the event, Florida International University participated in a statewide hackathon, hosted in collaboration with the U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory. The challenge: design a hybrid cyber defense system to engage and distract an adversary, convincing them that they are interacting with a real, complex agent. The technical challenge focused on two core concepts, the "Bait" and the "Expert" derived from NFSTC's decades-long partnership with the defense industry. Teams were tasked with developing low-power, cloud-based intelligence solutions capable of delivering real-time, adaptive responses. These concepts were grounded in NFSTC’s operational expertise in forensic intelligence and exploitation analysis, ensuring the solutions aligned with real-world mission needs rather than theoretical models. We're proud of our participation in this important event, bringing forward solution pathways with applied innovation and national security problem-solving. Learn more about how FIU and NFSTC are bridging academia, technology, and operational impact at gfjc.fiu.edu.

FIU Secures 2nd Place at the eMerge 2026 Project SCALPLE - Florida State University System Hackathon at eMerge Americas hosted by USF IAE for DEVCOM Army Research Lab (ARL) Hackathon! I am incredibly proud to report that our FIU teams took home 2nd place in a highly competitive field at this year’s DEVCOM ARL Hackathon. All eight participating teams brought their A-game, but I was especially impressed by the professionalism, adaptability, and resilience our two FIU teams displayed throughout the challenge. The mission was intense: building a hybrid cyber-deception system. The teams had to develop a low-power Edge Agent to act as "bait" for attackers, backed by a sophisticated Cloud Brain (AWS) for high-level intelligence. While we didn’t take the top spot, our students represented FIU as true champions and proved they are ready for the front lines of forensic and cyber defense. Congratulations to the teams on this well-deserved win! #FIU #eMergeAmericas #CyberSecurity #ArmyResearchLab #Hackathon #Innovation #FutureLeaders Global Forensic and Justice Center

  • Forensic Science Needs Your Leadership Our Professional Science Master's is an innovative program enabling students to pursue advanced training while developing highly-valued management skills. Our graduates are applying their expertise in science and leadership to propel forensic laboratories forward and pursue justice. "While graduates of forensic science programs tend to be prepared with scientific skills, they may lack the practical experience and critical thinking skills necessary to be ready to provide immediate support in the laboratory upon hiring. There is a need to bridge the gap between the goals of the academic programs and those of the forensic laboratories." —National Institute of Justice Report to Congress for Needs Assessments of Forensics Laboratories and Medical Examiner/Coroner Offices Applications OPEN thru May 1 at go.fiu.edu/PSMFS
