On April 11, we’ll be hosting FLAP Canada’s annual bird layout at our Mississauga headquarters. Nearly 3,000 birds collected by FLAP’s volunteers in 2025 will be displayed at our premises. This layout will be a sobering yet powerful picture of the toll glass collisions continue to take across the Greater Toronto Area. Nevertheless, it will equally serve to remind us that bird collisions are not rare, and certainly not unavoidable. They happen every day, year-round, and remain one of the most preventable threats to birds in urban environments. We’re honoured to support FLAP Canada and to host this year’s display. As Feather Friendly marks its 20th year, we do so with the same resolve that has guided our work from the beginning: not stopping until glass everywhere is safe for birds. You can support that work, and FLAP’s, by joining us for this year’s layout. The leading bird-glass collision prevention solution. Approved by American Bird Conservancy and top conservation groups.
About us
It is estimated that collisions account for 1 billion bird deaths each year, or 10% of the total bird population in North America. In all of these collisions, buildings pose the biggest threat. Exterior glass, whether it be clear, tinted, or reflective, is not a recognizable part of the natural world for birds, and therefore, they simply do not 'see' it. Daytime collisions are generally associated with the reflection on the glass of vegetation or the sky on the lower 3-5 floors. Feather Friendly® was developed almost 20 years ago and is on its 6th generation. In that time, we have sold our solution globally with great success in reducing and eliminating bird collisions. Toronto was the first city in the world to develop Safe Building bylaws in regards to bird conservation. Similar guidelines have been adopted in major cities across North America as well as globally. Feather Friendly® is not a film but a marker that is placed on the outside surface to reduce reflection and alert birds to avoid a collision. Our Commercial and DIY products have been used for almost 20 years on thousands of residential and commercial installations with the highest performance rating both in longevity and reduced collisions. It is for both new construction as well as retrofit projects. We offer Commercial - Design, Consulting, Supply and Install or Supply only - and Residential DIY solutions. Feather Friendly® is recognized, approved and endorsed by both the American Bird Conservancy and FLAP Canada and is quickly becoming the number one choice to reduce bird collisions with glass. As spring approaches, billions of birds take to the skies on a journey to their breeding grounds. But before they take off, they undergo some fascinating changes to prepare their bodies for the long migration ahead. Here's a look at how birds transform themselves: ➡️Increased Fat Storage for Fuel: To power through long journeys, birds need a lot of energy. Before they set off, many species go through a process called hyperphagia, where they eat constantly to bulk up on fat! ➡️Muscle Growth: Much like athletes in training, birds bulk up their pectoral muscles - the muscles that power their wings. These muscles grow help birds maintain the stamina they’ll need for hours (or even days) of flight. ➡️Shrinking Internal Organs: Some birds shrink some of their internal organs to reduce weight. This helps them become lighter and more aerodynamic. ➡️Hollowing Out the Bones: Birds have lightweight hollow bones, but during migration, some species further reduce their bone mass to shed weight. ➡️Feather Regrowth: Feathers play a huge role in migration, providing the lift needed for long flights. Before migrating, birds undergo a thorough feather molt, shedding worn feathers and growing fresh ones to ensure they’re ready for the journey ahead. ➡️Increased Oxygen-Rich Blood: To keep their muscles fueled during long flights, birds increase the number of red blood cells in their bodies. This helps carry more oxygen to their muscles. These amazing adaptations prepare birds for the gruelling challenges of migration. But even with these incredible transformations, they still face dangers - like collisions with glass. This spring, let’s help birds stay safe by making our windows bird-friendly with Feather Friendly markers or Bird Divert UV markers, which help birds detect glass and avoid fatal accidents! #birdsafe #glasscollision #featherfriendly #birdsafeglass #education #provensolution #conservation #birdconservation #birds #glass #savebirds #DIY #wildlifeconservation #markers #treatglasssavebirds #wildlifeconservation #spring #springmigration

We’ve heard it again and again from many of you: Feather Friendly Pro DIY is your go-to solution for mid-sized bird collision mitigation projects. Now, just in time for spring migration, we’re giving you even more flexibility with this industry-leading product, while maintaining its exceptional durability, longevity, and proven performance: Our Melody-pattern 6" Pro DIY is now available in two new lengths, to add to the existing 150’ roll: - 6” x 100’ (covering 50 sq ft of glass) - 6” x 50’ (covering 25 sq ft of glass) That means more project options for all sizes, whether you’re treating a small area or undertaking a larger installation. These new 6" formats can also be used alongside our 18" Melody pattern to give you more precise coverage options. If your project needs more than one 18" roll can cover, but not a full 75 sq ft roll, you now have more flexibility to choose the right combination. For example, a project needing about 250 sq ft of coverage could use one 18" roll plus one new 25 sq ft 6" roll, while a 275 sq ft project could pair one 18" roll with one new 50 sq ft 6" roll. Same proven protection and performance. More ways to treat glass and save birds! #FeatherFriendly #birddivert #BirdDivertUV #BirdSafeGlass #BirdFriendly #SaveTheBirds #BirdCollisionPrevention #ProtectBirds #BirdSafeDesign #BirdFriendlyGlass #WildlifeConservation #EcoFriendlyDesign #SustainableDesign #UrbanWildlife #GlassSafety #BuildingForBirds #BirdProtection

Iris Häussler’s work as part of our Artist Series is deeply connected with her lifelong response to the loss of birds that she experienced in her early years. On the Save Birds page on her website, she writes, “Since childhood, after witnessing the rapid biodiversity decline in rural Germany in the 1970s, I have mourned the loss of their songs.” That experience continues to shape how she sees migration, the threat of untreated glass, and the role art can play in protection. Through her art and work with FLAP, Iris addresses what she calls “a hidden tragedy of migration”, i.e., bird-glass collisions caused by reflections that birds mistake for open sky and foliage. In collaboration with Feather Friendly, she creates life-saving artwork that “breaks this deception, turning glass from silent threats into visible thresholds for birds.” You can explore the Save Birds page in more detail on Iris’s website here: https://lnkd.in/eQQCznqa

Spring migration is here, and while it’s still a bit quiet, the earliest migrants are starting to show up! Here are some of the earliest species you can expect to spot in the coming weeks: 🖤 Red-winged Blackbird – One of the first true signs of spring, their unmistakable calls ring out from wetlands and fields. 💛 Yellow-rumped Warbler – One of the first warblers to arrive, signaling that migration is picking up! 🟣 Purple Martin – These aerial acrobats often return around early April. 💙 Tree Swallow – One of the first swallows to show up in open areas. 🤎 Chipping Sparrow – Small but hardy, these sparrows are among the first to make their way north. 🤍 Eastern Phoebe – These flycatchers arrive early, calling out their raspy "fee-bee" as they settle in. 🌲 Pine Warbler – A reliable early migrant, often appearing in the first half of April. ❤️ Rufous Hummingbird – One of the first hummingbirds to migrate, showing up in southern regions in March and moving northward. As these early migrants make their way through, don’t forget to get your windows prepared for the busy migration season ahead. Feather Friendly markers can help make sure these birds are safe from glass collisions as they continue their journey. #birdsafe #glasscollision #featherfriendly #birdsafeglass #education #provensolution #conservation #birdconservation #birds #glass #savebirds #DIY #wildlifeconservation #markers #treatglasssavebirds #wildlifeconservation #sustainability #greensolution #spring #springmigration #earlybird

Bob H is protecting birds at his property with Bird Divert, the world’s premier UV bird-collision mitigation solution. Built on science, tested and approved by American Bird Conservancy, and proven in real-world conditions, Bird Divert uses a high-clarity UV pattern that birds recognize as a barrier, while being almost invisible to us. It’s simple to install and made to keep performing season after season. We thank Bob for doing his bit to protect birds (and for sharing these great photos)!
