  • How can Europe strengthen its digital resilience in an increasingly connected world — when that world remains fragmented? At the upcoming European Resilience Summit on May 12 in Vienna, FACIS will explore exactly this question in a Doc Read session. 🌎As Europe’s digital landscape becomes increasingly interconnected, fragmentation is no longer just a structural issue – it directly affects how systems respond to disruption. Services span organisations, providers, and borders, but often without a shared approach to trust and coordination. The result: limited resilience. ➡️ In our session, we will discuss how Zero Trust – a security approach where no user or system is automatically trusted and every access must be continuously verified – can help address this challenge – not just as a security concept, but as a foundation for resilient, federated digital Join us in Vienna to explore how continuous verification, federation, and shared rules can help turn fragmentation into a more resilient, connected system. Looking forward to the exchange at the European Resilience Summit! 📍 12 May 2026 | Park Hyatt, Vienna ➡️ Secure your seat (Link in the comments)! #EuropeanResilienceSummit #DigitalResilience #ZeroTrust #FACIS #8ra #CloudEdge #CyberSecurity

  • Buildings optimize their energy consumption in real time. Street lighting adapts automatically to traffic and surroundings. Infrastructure reports issues before failures occur. ➡️These applications already exist. And yet, they often remain isolated use cases. Why? Because data is locked in silos and systems don’t work together. This is where FACIS FAPs come in. They create the foundation for connecting systems, enabling secure data flows, and making applications scalable. The Federation Architecture Pattern (FAP) on IoT and AI shows how data in federated ecosystems can be collected from many devices, shared securely, brought together in one place, and then analyzed with Artificial Intelligence to be clearly presented on a dashboard. When data is connected and used in a smart way, it can create real value. Processes can run more smoothly, resources can be used more efficiently, and everyday systems can react automatically to what is happening around them. ♾️ This is how individual use cases become connected systems — and how the Economy of Things becomes reality. The future lies not in isolated applications, but in systems that work together. ❓Where do you see the greatest potential for connected applications today? #FACIS #EconomyOfThings #Interoperability #SmartCity #DigitalInfrastructure

  • “If we align technology, regulation, and investment, we can strengthen trust and scale innovation across Europe”, says Elena Simon, one of our speakers at FACIS Connect on June 9–10 in Berlin. Read her answers to our “3 Questions for…” series here before hearing her speak live (secure one of the limited free tickets now—link in the comments!). ❓What is the key message you would like to share at FACIS Connect? Europe has the expertise and regulatory foundation to build trusted digital ecosystems. The key is to translate this into interoperable infrastructure that enables secure data and service exchange across borders. If we align technology, regulation, and investment, we can strengthen trust and scale innovation across Europe. ❓In your opinion, what role does professional exchange play in turning technical possibilities into real-world applications? Professional exchange is critical to building trust and interoperability in federated ecosystems. It connects industry, research, and policymakers to align standards, infrastructure, and real-world needs. This is what turns isolated technical solutions into scalable, collaborative applications. ❓What opportunities does a reimagined approach to digital collaboration offer for the competitiveness of companies in Europe—and how does your organization plan to contribute? Federated digital collaboration allows companies to securely share data and services across providers and countries while maintaining control and compliance. This strengthens Europe’s competitiveness by enabling scalable AI and reducing dependency on non-European ecosystems. We contribute by providing sovereign, GDPR-compliant infrastructure that supports secure, interoperable, and high-performance AI and cloud environments. #FACIS #DigitalSovereignty #OpenSource #CloudEdgeContinuum #ecosystem #digitaleurope #federation

  • "Sovereign AI models and federated infrastructure are two sides of the same coin", says Nicolas Flores, one of the speakers at FACIS Connect on June 9–10 in Berlin. Read his answers to our “3 Questions for…” series here before hearing him speak live (secure one of the limited free tickets now—link in the comments!). ❓ What is the key message you would like to share at FACIS Connect? Sovereign AI models and federated infrastructure are two sides of the same coin. Without trustworthy, interoperable cloud-edge infrastructure, even the best models remain laboratory results. Without capable models running on it, the infrastructure lacks purpose. Europe needs its own foundational AI layer. Therefore, in Soofi, we are training a family of sovereign open-source large language models up to 100 billion parameters on European sovereign infrastructure. Soofi is part of the 8ra initiative, the same ecosystem that FACIS is building the federated architecture for. ❓ In your opinion, what role does professional exchange play in turning technical possibilities into real-world applications? The AI teams that succeed are the ones that learn from each other across disciplines: data curation and synthesis, model training and handling the latest AI compute infrastructures. We work with a broad network of partners. That breadth only works through strong exchange—within projects and across the European ecosystem. Events like FACIS Connect are where these conversations happen concretely, bringing together those building infrastructure and those developing the models that run on it. ❓What opportunities does a reimagined approach to digital collaboration offer for the competitiveness of companies in Europe, and how does your organization plan to contribute?   Today, European companies rely heavily on non-European AI models and cloud platforms. This   means giving up control over how proprietary data and domain knowledge are processed and monetised. A federated approach—where companies can access AI services across providers without lock-in and under European jurisdiction—changes this fundamentally. At Fraunhofer IAIS, we contribute by developing the models for this ecosystem. The goal is not isolation, but enabling Europe to participate in the global AI landscape on its own terms. #FACIS #DigitalSovereignty #OpenSource #CloudEdgeContinuum #ecosystem #digitaleurope #federation

  • If we want to make data accessible in real time and reliably across borders in Europe, the biggest shift has to happen in our minds first. It has to click. ♾️ It’s always a good idea to have multiple alternatives and choices instead of relying on dominant actors. Every company, every contractor, and every investor knows this. Yet when it comes to data traffic, many people are still unaware of how much freedom of design and choice is already possible. 💻Centralized platforms where all data is managed in one place are still considered “state of the art,” even though technical solutions for decentralized approaches have existed for quite some time. These approaches can foster innovation and help build a digital future that is open, resilient, and inclusive - one in which everyone can participate. 🤝Through secure collaboration based on trust, fairness, and innovation, Europe’s digital future can be safeguarded. That’s why a shift in thinking is needed now in order to achieve: ● greater flexibility ● resilience ● digital sovereignty ● stronger and fairer competitiveness Change is therefore urgently required in Europe. The biggest challenge is the necessary cultural shift- and it starts in our minds. Being truly willing to engage with alternatives to centralized platforms is the first crucial step. Read more in the new FACIS white paper “The Mindset Shift – From Centralized Platforms to Federation” (link in the comments). ➡️ We’re curious: How does your company access data across industries and borders? Are you already considering alternatives for making data accessible in a decentralized way?
