I'm back from PyCon DE & PyData and here are some of my favourite moments and highlights: 🚄 running into like 5+ people before even getting on the train, including 🧐 Laura, Andy, Sarah and Xia ⚡ hosting the Feminist AI LAN Party with Katharine and Jesper (and help from Tereza + our great volunteers), with a super chill lounge, workshops (building a "femosphere" bot and many other community contributions), DIY collage zine making and great conversations 🕵️♀️ hacking on a mini app for making cute Pokémon-style cards for attendees with Cansu and Laura for the Schnitzeljagd (scavenger hunt) – the work you put into this was so so impressive! ✨ presenting my talk on "Vibe NLP" and sharing what we've been building: a virtual assistant for NLP projects, distilling our experience from 10+ years of solving real-world NLP problems with out-of-the-box infrastructure to run everything you need. See below for the slides on how we built it, and stay tuned for more updates and beta access! 🎙️ joining two panel discussions on the future of Python coding in the age of Generative AI and building a business on open-source software 🔮 chatting to people from all kids of industries about their AI worflows – my mission was to find out more about the state of vibe coding for practical (and sometimes even boring) use cases and I left with lots of interesting data points 🖤 hanging out with old and new friends who have become so much more than just conference buddies (too many to tag), plus Alexander and all the other organizers and volunteers who made the conference happen My next Python conferences will be PyData London in June and PyCon Armenia + PyData Yerevan in July. Hope to see you there! (Also, it's my first time in Armenia so let me know if you have any tips for what to do or see.)

Ines Montani (spaCy, Explosion) is one of the most inspiring builders in the DS/NLP-->ML-->AI space 🛠️ She's also returning as a guest speaker in the final cohort of our Building with AI course that kicks off next week to teach a workshop with Natalia Rodnova (VP of Data Science, Eon Health) and myself on "Ground Truth for AI Evals: Annotation Pipelines in Practice". On top of that, she's sponsoring with 6 months of Prodigy credits: part of over $1,300 in total credits for all students across our course sponsors. Thanks, Ines! Our Ask an Expert! Series continued yesterday with AI star, Ines Montani of Explosion. We covered a lot of ground, but the most salient takeaway for me was not to disrupt the analyst’s spatial memory (see: where are the buttons I need?). I am also adding nuance to my previous post from the paper regarding Increasing Speed and Accuracy of Data Labeling, where we concluded that providing multiple inferences to an analyst lead to higher quality. As you’d expect, however, there are diminishing returns. You can see in this example image how overwhelming it is to have that number of values and that they are populated in different orders each time.   Ines wrote more about these idea in her blog post here: https://lnkd.in/dvg3czGC

I've been getting a lot of questions recently about optimizing annotation workflows – looks like many new NLP projects are starting at the moment ✨ So to share some of our tips and advice, I put together a blog post featuring examples inspired by real use cases and a checklist to help you get started. TL;DR: 1️⃣ Design your label scheme carefully.  Keep labels atomic and generic, and factor out business logic that doesn't belong in the model. 2️⃣ Keep tasks small and simple.  Focus on one concept at a time and choose the simplest task type that captures the information you need. 3️⃣ Use model assistance and automate.  Automate what machines are already good at, and don't be afraid to reframe tasks to reduce manual effort. 4️⃣ Train early and often.  Start training as soon as possible to get feedback on whether your approach is working before you scale up. This year PyCon DE & PyData will again host a Feminist AI LAN Party! 🎉 The satellite event is free of charge and open to all, and this year Ines Montani and I are hoping you all wanna join in and help co-create the space, bring your ideas and connect locally. We need volunteers (facilitation, IT-Crew and room setup/breakdown), donations (zine supplies, computers + cables, your art) and your ideas for workshops, talks, activities! Setup and IT-Crew starts on Monday, April 13 in Darmstadt. Facilitation, activities, talks and workshops run from April 14-16. Breakdown and "see you next years" happens on April 17. 🥲 Want to join and help out? Wanna do some IT-crew support or bring your GPU (you get a special shirt y'all!)? Have a cool idea, workshop or activity to present? Please reach out! You can connect here, on BlueSky or via email: organizers@feministai.party More details on our site: https://lnkd.in/diPTHkyN Looking forward to seeing you all there and connecting locally :)

    • People sitting around on the floor with cables running across to computers. A zine making station is in the background. There are many people chatting, working and connecting.
    • Feminist AI LAN Party. We aim to create a safe, inclusive and hacker-oriented space for experimenting with the intersection of feminism and artificial intelligence. Feminist AI LAN parties are participatory events where everyone can be involved and learn, train, imagine, co-create and hack. The goal is to develop artistic and scientific contributions to the greater machine learning community and of course to have fun, experiment, network and play!
    • A network switch and running cables to several machines.
    • A woman is presenting and another person is sitting on a bean bag watching the presentation.

My PhD journal paper is finally published 😊. The vision: Modern kitchens still have isolated "smart" devices that don't communicate. We're working towards fully-fledged ambient kitchens where devices know what to do and when. What we built: RiCoRecA—a novel schema for parsing cooking recipes into workflow representations suitable for automation. Unlike previous approaches, we integrate coding concepts where a cooking recipe can express conditions, parallelism, and while loops with state checking—envisioning parsing from natural language directly to IoT instructions. We also jointly learn multiple information extraction tasks (NER, relation identification, coreference resolution, and entity tracking) in one unified model. The results: We compared PEGASUS-X and LongT5 transformer models. PEGASUS-X outperformed LongT5 by 39% on average across all tasks, achieving near-human performance. ✨ Technical highlight: We built a custom Prodigy annotation interface that handles NER, relation classification, and coreference resolution simultaneously, with an interactive graph visualisation for annotators. The review process with Frontiers took some time—we had reviewers dropping off—but I genuinely loved working with them. Their automation and editorial support were exceptional. 👏 Huge thanks to my collaborators and supervisors: Mauricio Jacobo, Haifa Alrdahi, Sarah Clinch and Riza Batista-Navarro Special shout-out to Ines Montani for Prodigy support: https://lnkd.in/eiNKdBdU https://lnkd.in/eVeJTZdz
