Working together to design open technical specifications for digital media delivery.

About us

The DVB Project is an industry-led consortium of the world's leading digital television and technology companies, who work together to design open technical specifications for digital media delivery. Founded in 1994, DVB counts manufacturers, software developers, network operators, broadcasters and regulators among its members. The truly global standard for digital television, DVB specifications are used on every continent and in every country, with more than 1.5 billion DVB receivers in use. DVB specifications are commercially driven and maximize the use of common solutions across broadcast – satellite, cable, terrestrial – and broadband networks. The success of our standards benefits both the DVB Members who develop them and the industry as a whole.

  • We've welcomed Ocean Blue Software Ltd. to the DVB Project. Headquartered in the UK, Ocean Blue Software brings over 20 years of experience in smart TV and broadcast software – from middleware and platform development to testing and validation. They're already active in the DVB-I space, developing client solutions and test harnesses to help manufacturers validate service lists and ensure metadata integrity. We're delighted to have them on board. 👍 More info: https://lnkd.in/eDyZyKTU -- Don't forget that any organization with a role in the digital television value chain can apply for membership, with special tiers available for smaller companies and for universities. • Native DRM for DVB-I – no app required. Here's what the proof of concept showed. Gordon Maynard and Raj Patel wrote this piece for DVB Scene magazine earlier this year. We're republishing it as a website post because the work it describes – a successful proof of concept for native DRM in DVB-I, without requiring a linked app – marks a meaningful step forward for broadcasters planning IP-delivered linear services. The PoC, built around RTÉ's Saorview service and demonstrated at IBC 2025, showed that licence request URLs can be embedded directly in DASH manifests, enabling DRM-protected streams to play on unmodified TV sets without launching an app. Three of four devices tested at the DTG/DTVP Plugfest supported it straight away. Work continues – and there was further discussion on this at DVB World 2026 – but the direction of travel is clear. • Last month in Kuala Lumpur, DVB and its members were active across two sessions at ABU DBS 2026. Our workshop – "DVB at the intersection of IP, mobile, and broadcast" – drew around 75 attendees and featured presentations from Richard Lhermitte (ENENSYS), Vinosh Babu James (Qualcomm), and Mika Kanerva (Sofia Digital), followed by a lively interactive demo session where Paul Higgs (Huawei) and Alan Liang (AVS Association) joined the panel. Our Head of Technology Emily Dubs also presented in the main conference programme, covering DVB-I momentum globally – including Freeview New Zealand's forthcoming deployment, Deutsche TV-Plattform's DVB-I Implementation Profile, and RTÉ's trial in Ireland. • The DVB session at ABU DBS 2026 was a big success! See Emily's post below for more info.

Crowded room, high energy, and more questions than we could answer on stage: the 𝗗𝗩𝗕 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗕𝗨 𝗗𝗕𝗦 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗟𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗿 was a fantastic success, with around 75 attendees joining. The session showcased how DVB solutions are driving the shift to an IP-centric future, while 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗣, 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. Speakers covered everything from bridging the digital divide with DVB-NIP and unlocking mobile broadcast with DVB-I over 5G, to enabling addressable advertising with DVB-TA and reducing satellite costs with DVB-SIS. 💬 So many questions came in that discussions continued into the interactive demo session. This included live demonstrations on the main screen, followed by smaller group exchanges for more focused conversations. 💡The demos sparked significant interest, with a key “aha!” moment being that DVB-I is a software-based solution that does not require specialized hardware. A sincere thank you to the speakers - Richard Lhermitte, from ENENSYS Technologies, Vinosh Babu James from Qualcomm, Mika Kanerva from Sofia Digital, and Alan Liang from AVS Association - and to the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union for facilitating such a productive workshop. It was also a privilege to have Paul Higgs from Hisilicon, our DVB-I Technical Group Chair, join the discussions during the demos. #ABUDBS #DBS2026 #DVBI #DVBNIP #Broadcasting #5GBroadcast DVB Project

  • 📣 Extended deadline – ten more days to make your voice count. If you work in addressable advertising for streaming – as a broadcaster, platform, ad tech provider, device manufacturer, or network operator – DVB wants to hear from you. Our short industry survey on addressable advertising in broadband streaming is still open. We're particularly interested in how Server-Guided Ad Insertion (SGAI) compares – commercially and operationally – to CSAI and SSAI. The results will feed directly into standardization work in DVB and elsewhere, so it's important to have a good range of inputs. The deadline has been extended to Friday 10 April. If you haven't yet responded, now's the time. • We recently announced the new leadership of our IPR Module, but now it's time to recognize the person who recently stepped down from leading that group. At DVB World in Amsterdam last week, Georg Nolte was presented with Honorary Fellowship of the DVB Project. In granting this honour, DVB's Chair Remo Vogel highlighted both Georg's ten years at the helm of the IPRM as well as his contributions as a member of DVB's leadership team through a period of considerable transformation. In total, Georg had been an active contributor to DVB's work for 23 years, all while working for the Panasonic R&D Center Germany. Join us in congratulating Georg Nolte! • DVB World 2026 is done and dusted. Two days in Amsterdam, 18 unconference sessions, four tutorials, two significant DVB-I deployment announcements, and a lot of ground covered on 5G Broadcast, DVB-NIP, edge AI, and what the broadcast industry needs to do to stay relevant. Our chair Remo Vogel set the tone at the opening: DVB's focus should be "to enable a managed transition from classic broadcast to IP-centric media distribution, retaining an open ecosystem for devices and services." The conversations that followed – in the conference hall and especially in the unconference rooms – showed that work is well under way. Full report and photos: https://lnkd.in/eJYqVjkm Thanks to Michiel Ton for the photography.
