Youth mental health cannot be an afterthought, and schools are a critical front line for early support. Key data points: • 1 in 5 U.S. adolescents ages 12–17 has a diagnosed mental or behavioral health condition. • 40% of high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. • 63% of California youth with major depression are not receiving treatment. • Long Beach alone is home to 120,293 young people ages 5–24. • In 2024–2025, Long Beach Unified School District mental health services reported 196,438 Wellness Center walk-ins and 12,511 individual counseling sessions. Educators and school teams have tremendous influence on early intervention, but we have to prepare and support them to recognize needs, respond with care, and build routines that strengthen belonging and regulation before students reach a breaking point. At Dramatic Results, we integrate emotional regulation and coping skills into every workshop. Our Teaching Artists model healthy behaviors and build consistent routines that help students practice these skills over time. Dramatic Results will be closed tomorrow, Friday, January 30, in solidarity with the nationwide shutdown opposing ICE enforcement and the harm it is inflicting on our communities. ICE does not only terrorize immigrants. Its presence and tactics spread fear, destabilize families, and normalize state violence that impacts entire neighborhoods and civic life. Our position is direct: defund ICE and reinvest those resources in community care, due process, and supports that keep families safe. We will be back on Monday.
