~70% of projects fail to meet original objectives (scope, cost, or schedule), across industries; design deficiencies are consistently identified as a leading contributor. In construction and infrastructure, over 50% 📉 of projects experience rework or design‑related changes, and ~90% exceed budget 📈 , with design errors and late design changes among the top causes. Design is the dominant leverage point for preventing engineering failure Most failures originate early, before construction. Technical errors are often secondary to process and communication breakdowns. ⛓️💥 Verification, independent review, and constructability checks reduce failure probability dramatically. 📝 > Ensure you have a licensed, experienced engineer > Ask the right questions > Provide accurate requirements > Have excellent communication & collaboration 📧

People Behind the Plans | DOTec Spotlight Meet Michael Losch, Director of Business Development at DOTec Engineering. Michael appreciates the people at DOTec most. It takes a strong, cohesive team to move a project from concept to completion, and that level of commitment shows every day. When challenges come up or adjustments are needed, solutions come quickly because everyone is willing to step in and support one another. He enjoys the full range of projects the team takes on, from quick turnaround jobs to complex, multi phased projects involving multiple disciplines. Seeing the same level of care and attention applied across the board is what makes the work both impressive and rewarding. His advice to clients is simple. Communicate early and often. Never hesitate to ask questions, and if timing is critical, make that known upfront. At the end of the day, it is a partnership, and the goal is to make sure every client gets exactly what they need. Outside of work, Michael stays busy at home with an eight month old and a Boston Terrier, so there is never a dull moment. He is also fluent in American Sign Language, having grown up with deaf parents. #DOTecEngineering #PeopleBehindThePlans #Engineering #Leadership #StLouis #BusinessDevelopment

People Behind the Plans | DOTec Spotlight Meet Matthew Godier, VP of Business Acquisition and Research Development at DOTec Engineering. Matthew enjoys the variety that comes with every day at DOTec. Each project brings a new challenge, a new opportunity, and a new client to work with. One of the most rewarding aspects for him is contributing to projects across the country while working from St. Louis, helping deliver high quality civil, structural, and MEP engineering without being limited by location. He especially enjoys working on diverse, nationwide projects such as timber frame structures, precast concrete systems, shade sails, and foundations. These projects keep things interesting because they require creative problem solving, precision, and strong coordination across teams. The variety and complexity make each project both challenging and rewarding. His advice to clients starting a new project is to be clear and intentional with your scope from the beginning. Defining goals, requirements, site information, and expectations early on sets the foundation for success. Open communication throughout the process helps prevent delays, reduce revisions, and keep the project moving efficiently and within budget. Outside of work, Matthew enjoys spending time outdoors fishing and exploring nature, as well as hanging out with friends and bowling. He also has a strong interest in world history and enjoys learning how past events connect to the present.

Today is World Meteorological Day. Most people think about the weather in terms of what to wear or whether to bring an umbrella ☂️. In engineering, it is something else entirely. It is load calculations, drainage planning 🌧️, soil conditions, and long term durability. It is designing for what happens when conditions are not ideal. With record heat ☀️ patterns and shifting weather trends already showing up earlier in the year, the assumptions that worked yesterday are being tested in real time. What used to be considered rare is becoming more common. That changes how projects need to be approached from day one. Good engineering does not just meet the standard. It anticipates what is coming. At DOTec Engineering, we focus on designing solutions that hold up under real world conditions, not just perfect ones. Because the environment will always have the final say. The question is whether your project is ready for it.
