Sarah Gadsby, LCSW, will be the graduation speaker at CT State Middlesex this year. She is a prominent mental health leader and serves as Chief Executive Officer of River Valley Services with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. With more than 30 years of experience leading behavioral health organizations in both the private and nonprofit sectors, Sarah has advanced evidence-based integrated care, improving outcomes for individuals and families. CT State Middlesex drone team “Rising Phoenix” (Nicolekya Grabinski, Jake Hatton, Zach Le, Jordan Nelson), along with advisors (Rebecca Rist-Brown, Kris Marques, Jihoon Kang), competed in the Community College Drone Challenge held at the University of Hartford on April 17. The annual event was made possible by the NASA CT Space Grant Consortium.

The Connecticut Society of Radiologic Technologists, Inc. (CSRT) hosted its Annual Student College Bowl Competition on April 17 at the Middlesex campus, drawing more than 113 students from seven of the state’s eight radiography programs. CT State Manchester won by just one point over Naugatuck Valley and Gateway, with the remaining teams finishing only slightly behind, creating an energetic and enthusiastic atmosphere. Last month, 23 Middlesex radiography students joined peers at the state capitol, where they heard from State Senator Henri Martin and advocated for legislation addressing radiographer licensure fees—an issue tied to a shortage of radiographers. Prof. Bryan Goh reports that optical students recently learned from five industry leaders about the latest in vision care. Speakers from HOYA Vision Care, EssilorLuxottica, Cherry Optical and IOT shared insights on lens technology, manufacturing and customized design. Danish frame designer Orgreen Eyewear also connected with students virtually to explore frame materials, production and craftsmanship, but with a range of high-quality frames on hand to touch and try on. “Make my death an issue so you can help others like me” was Jared Buchanan’s father’s message after he died of suicide in 2013. Jared, a Middlesex grad, talked passionately about his dad Paul, a former police officer, before alumni and guests viewed a screening of his film, Beautifully Broken. Thank you, Jared—and director Daniel Herzog—for spending time with us and for all you do to help others who struggle with depression. The event was sponsored by the MxCC Foundation.
