How will AI affect Geospatial Data in 2026? There's a great interview with Ordnance Survey's (OS) CTO Manish Jethwa at Spatial Source. Here's some key takeaways that are aligning with what we are seeing as well: 1) Conversational and agentic AI becoming mainstream. Assistants will interpret complex datasets and respond in clear, natural language. A planner could ask, “Where’s the best site for a new school?” and get results combining catchment areas, transport access, and available land—no GIS expertise required. 2) Responsible AI becoming essential. Because agentic AI requires broad access to data, “the threat surface grows.” For organizations whose systems support emergency services or critical infrastructure, standards around validation, auditability, and ethical use will be non-negotiable. 3) Hybrid human-AI workflows becoming the norm. AI will do the heavy lifting, but humans will validate and guide results. Machine learning examples such as calculating solar potential from roof imagery are just the beginning.
