Welcome back to our Web Accessibility Tips Series for beginners with Tip #2: Use Headings! In writing, headings are a short word or phrase that tells you what each section of a paper is about. This should be used in webpages by adding the correct heading level HTML code to show the structure of content on a page to people using screen readers. Headings levels are ranked from most important to the least important, ranging from rank 1 (<h1>) to rank 6 (<h6>). Sections of equal importance can have the same heading level while sections of lower importance should have a lower heading level, acting as nested subsection. Headings show the structure of content on a page and thus allow people to skim a website to know what each section is about. They are especially helpful for someone using a screen reader. A screen reader will read out the heading levels allowing a person to quickly navigate to important content.

Center for Inclusive Design & Innovation reposted this
This past weekend, I had the honor of representing the Center for Advanced Communications Policy, Georgia Institute of Technology alongside the Center for Inclusive Design & Innovation at the NY Metro Abilities Expo! Our main mission was recruiting attendees for our research on workplace accommodation for people with physical disabilities. I also got to collect thoughts and opinions for a podcast we recently launched (shameless plug: CHIRP Podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts) on how we can make research more inclusive and accessible. I came out of this experience feeling truly enriched. Connecting with people from all walks of life always fills my heart, and this weekend was no exception. Hearing the gratitude people have for the work being done at Georgia Tech made me so proud to be part of an institute that is constantly innovating to try and make the world a better place. It was a beautiful reminder that inclusive research is the foundation of meaningful, collaborative progress. #Accessibility #Inclusion #GeorgiaTech #DisabilityRights #ResearchImpact

Welcome to our Web Accessibility Tips Series for beginners, starting with Tip #1: Use Short Unique Webpage Titles! Descriptive, unique webpage titles help people understand what a webpage is about. For example, the CIDI website uses webpage titles throughout the site to help people find what they are looking for. The home page is clearly labeled as “Home | Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation.” By starting with the unique and most relevant information, instead of the organization’s website, our site can help people more quickly find things. In addition, using webpage titles helps people using screen readers better navigate a website. A screen reader will read out the webpage titles, giving users a clear idea of what to expect from a webpage. Do you have any examples of short, unique webpage titles, or want help with workshopping your own webpage titles? Let us know in the comments!

Data drives decisions, but what happens when the data doesn't reflect reality? Research dictates everything from community funding and public policy to accessibility in the built environment. But historically, the disability community—especially individuals from marginalized backgrounds—has been left out of the conversation. My colleagues at Georgia Institute of Technology recently launched the CHIRP (Consortium for Helping to Improve Research Participation) podcast to tackle this systemic gap head-on. In their first episode, "Who are you asking?", researchers Salimah LaForce (Major) and Fran Harris break down why diverse representation in data is non-negotiable for equitable policy. If we want systems that serve everyone, we have to start by asking the right people!
