Welcome to CDM Smith, Mike S.! In his new role as delivery director, Mike will oversee and support design-build projects and integrated project delivery. He brings 33 years of experience leading complex, high-risk infrastructure programs and projects for public, federal and industrial owners. He has a proven record of delivering multi-year, multi-project portfolios, totaling more than $4.18 billion across water and wastewater treatment, conveyance systems, secure and mission-critical facilities, military aviation infrastructure, bulk fuel systems and heavy industrial projects. “I’m looking forward to leveraging my federal and heavy industrial experience to help drive successful outcomes on high‑visibility projects and support the firm’s continued growth in the program‑delivery space,” said Mike. “We are thrilled to have Mike join our team—his background in collaborative delivery, federal programs and organizational development makes him a strong addition to our leadership and a valuable resource for our construction clients,” said Tom Visosky. How do utilities scale water reuse without straining water supplies? As communities face growing pressure on water supplies driven by industrial growth, data center development, and evolving regulations water reuse is becoming a pretty critical part of long‑term planning. In this conversation, water reuse expert Greta Zornes, Ph.D. explains what it really means to scale reuse strategically. Watch now:

#NewPerspectives: Electrical engineer Matthew Smith learned early that the best engineers aren't just good at design. They're the ones who can explain it, question it and pass it on. In CDM Smith’s Raleigh office, Matt is known for two things: understanding power distribution systems and making sure that knowledge is shared. Recently married, a devoted dog dad and a diehard Gamecocks fan, he brings the same energy to mentoring as he does to thoughtful, detail-driven engineering. We caught up with him at Kerr Lake, his first project site, where seeing his computer-aided designs (CAD) in the field changed his perspective on the work entirely. 💡 What early moment at CDM Smith changed how you think about the work? My first site visit at Kerr Lake. It’s one thing to design equipment in CAD but seeing it in person is completely different. The facility showed signs of wear you’d expect after decades of hard use, but the water coming out was immaculate. I called my dad right after. It was a testament to the plant operators and the skill it takes to produce clean drinking water day in and day out. Those little boxes in CAD aren’t little in real life. ⭐ Anyone you look to for professional inspiration? A lot of that comes from my grandfather. Growing up, he was my real-life superhero. He came from a blue-collar background in Pennsylvania, was the first in his family to go to college, earned his electrical engineering degree from Penn State and eventually managed a plant that became part of Eaton. He passed away in 2021, but earlier this year I found equipment at a job site in California manufactured at a facility where he once worked. I asked my grandmother about the initials on the drawings, and they were his coworkers! It made the world feel very small. She calls moments like that "Godwinks." From a work perspective, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have strong mentors, especially Joe Doughney, and an amazing team in Raleigh. 👀 What differentiates a good engineer from a great one? Clear communication and the courage to admit what you don't know. Being a direct, humble communicator defines your impact, especially as a junior. When I’m in the mentor seat, I care way less if someone knows everything and more about how they communicate. Don’t spin your wheels for hours when help is right there. If you ask questions, you’re helping yourself, the project and the whole team. Teaching is also a real test: If you can’t explain something so others can easily follow it, you probably don’t quite know it yourself! For more than 125 years, Christ Church Bronxville has served as a vital community gathering space just outside New York City. By 2023, aging infrastructure and a failing heating system made it clear the church needed a more reliable, and sustainable solution to serve future generations. Working with ZBF Geothermal, LLC and Rototec, CDM Smith delivered an innovative geothermal system in a tight, historic setting where traditional drilling wasn’t an option. Using angled drilling and careful coordination, the team protected sensitive features like the church’s historic organ, reduced costs, and provided efficient heating and cooling, proving that geothermal isn’t just for new construction.
