Helping children who live in under-resourced neighborhoods have abundant life - mind, body and soul.

About us

By The Hand is a Christ-centered, after-school program that emphasizes academic excellence while nurturing the whole child—mind, body and soul. Strategically located in Chicago’s most under-resourced neighborhoods, By The Hand is currently serving over 1,600 kids in critical need across the city. By The Hand has after-school program locations in Altgeld-Murray, Austin, Cabrini-Green, Englewood and is currently building a sixth site in North Austin. We partner with 17 Chicago Public Schools. Children are recommended by local principals who are failing in reading. In the 2019 school year, 1,523 kids were enrolled with an overall average of 3.04 GPA. • 🚲 Last month, Julius LeFlore-Chapman, an Austin native, generously donated 24 bikes to our Austin students out of a desire to give back to his community and share his love of riding with our youth. “My friends and I would like the kids to know that there are people who they don't even know that believe in them and want to see them do great things.” Thank you Julius for blessing our students! ✨

  • For over two decades, By The Hand has ended the school year with an ABC Party to celebrate students earning all A’s, B’s and C’s on their report cards. This year, over 300 students celebrated their hard work at Six Flags Great America, where they rode roller coasters, splashed in the water park and soaked in the sun! It was a beautiful day of fun ✨🎢☀️

  • ✨ As part of our 25th Anniversary celebration, we are highlighting 25 alumni whose lives have been impacted by By The Hand. ✨ Meet Joshua, a 2009 Cabrini-Green alumnus. After graduating from Taylor University, he now serves students at our Moving Everest site. “Without By The Hand, I might still be stuck in the same place I was trying to get out of years ago. They helped me break that cycle, giving me opportunities and the support to create a different future and a different life.”

  • Today as we celebrate Independence Day and our nation's freedom, let us also thank God for the greatest freedom we have in His son Jesus Christ. We pray you have a safe and joyful Fourth of July! 🇺🇸 "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." – John 8:36

  • ✨ As part of our 25th Anniversary celebration, we are highlighting 25 alumni whose lives have been impacted by By The Hand. ✨ Meet Angelene, a 2004 By The Hand Cabrini-Green alumni. She graduated from Benedictine University and currently works for the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. “By The Hand helped me believe in myself and my potential. They helped me identify my gifts, and because of this I was able to graduate college. Achieving this goal made me feel unstoppable."

  • Our 2026 seniors recently gathered at our Cabrini-Green site to celebrate their high school graduation. The evening included games, encouragement and gifts to help students prepare for what comes next—including a laptop, an engraved Bible and other essentials made possible by generous donors. We are so proud of our graduates. And while this chapter is ending, our support continues. At By The Hand, we walk with students from kindergarten through college and beyond—loving and nurturing them mind, body and soul.
