Beyond Type 1 is a nonprofit organization changing what it means to live with diabetes.

About us

Beyond Type 1 is a global nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by diabetes. Co-founded in 2015 by Nick Jonas, Juliet De Baubigny, and fellow diabetes change-makers, Beyond Type 1 serves the largest digital audience of any diabetes nonprofit worldwide. From awareness and prevention to diagnosis and daily management, we’re here for every step of the journey. With a mission to help people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes survive, thrive, and collectively drive innovation toward prevention and cures, Beyond Type 1 offers bold, unfiltered support through education, community engagement and self-advocacy, ensuring their voices are heard and valued in spaces that inspire change. We meet people where they are—providing practical tools, community connection, and direct funding—while working to dismantle stigma and systemic barriers to care, domestically and internationally. By uniting the global diabetes community across all types, backgrounds, and geographies, we’re changing what it means to live with diabetes and creating a path to a world beyond it.

  • The diabetes rumor mill works overtime. Set the record straight. There are way more than 2 types of diabetes. More like 20+. So stigma around type 1 vs type 2 doesn't even tell the full story and fuels harmful narratives. There are stages of type 1 diabetes. When you get diagnosed with type 1, you’re actually already in stage 3. In earlier stages, there may be opportunity to delay diagnosis and preserve beta cell function. Insulin isn't the only hormone impacted by diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes don't make or can't properly regulate several hormones like amylin, glucagon, and GLP-1. • In 2021, 1 in 5 people reported rationing insulin because of its cost. And despite some legislative changes, these numbers are mostly unchanged. A recent episode of The Pitt brings visibility to this and the reality of diabetes without health insurance. Access to modern insulin and technology must be available to people with diabetes across all demographics, regardless of zip code, employment or insurance status or social status. • In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week, Lexie Peterson, known to many as @thedivabetic, is sharing her story, from bed rest and emergency surgery to her daughter’s 65-day stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), to shed light on the importance of self-advocacy, trusted care teams and the urgent need for better outcomes for those navigating pregnancy—especially Black women. "As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I had tunnel vision about lowering my A1C because I thought all these bad things would happen if it wasn't at a certain number. And I'm not saying you should have a crazy A1C during pregnancy, but perfection is impossible." Read more: https://lnkd.in/giS47aQD

  • There are a lot of misconceptions around the cost of insulin. Is it capped at $35? For who? We’re breaking it down — plus answering questions we got on the INSULIN Act. Everyone deserves access to modern insulin and technology. • What if a game like Candy Crush could teach the complex science of diabetes management? Sam Glassenberg created it with his Level One: A Diabetes Game and we're so proud to have supported its launch. “It trains your brain how to manage Type 1 diabetes,” Glassenberg said. “Everything you need to know; how to dose insulin, how to count carbs, how to manage ketones, how to deal with lows.” Designed to help those living with diabetes and their caregivers, Level One aims to help close the knowledge gap after diagnosis. “Basically, on Friday, your life is normal,” Glassenberg explains. “And then on Saturday, you’re responsible for injecting precisely calculated doses of a lethal drug, insulin, into your kid." Every person with diabetes has the right to thrive, with access to the knowledge, care and support needed.

When this veteran video game developer's 5-year-old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes, he found himself facing a terrifying new reality: Becoming his child's stand-in "pancreas," making life-or-death insulin decisions with only "confusing" instructions to guide him. So, he did what game designers do best. He built an app that turns the complex science of diabetes management into an intuitive interactive game. More here: https://cnn.it/4bFGrqt
