So yesterday we did a thing….. And it is a big thing!!
After 35 years (and a lot of community kōrero), I am incredibly proud to share that Sport Waitākere has a new name.
Ko te ingoa hou...... Tuia Waitākere.
The kupu “Tuia” speaks to weaving, binding and coming together. It captures our kaupapa of uniting people, stories and community strength, whilst weaving relationships across community, culture and place to support collective wellbeing.
So…. want to know more of how we got here, and see the new name in action??
If you are passing by the office, pop in. We would love to welcome you in and share our new look (shoutout to Daniel Ellensohn and the Benefitz team), or if you just cant wait…
Head on over to our new website where you can see the evolution, that the awesome team at Mahi Tahi helped us create, for yourself … You even get to watch me make my global movie debut, move over Morgan Freeman! 😏 https://lnkd.in/e-vJ_6Sj
Huge mihi to our outstanding Board for taking this brave and bold step, and to Grace Vujnovich and Priscilla TuiSamoa for leading this project with me from start to finish!! 2 exceptionally talented humans!!

For 30 years as Sport Waitākere, we've been here - working alongside West Auckland communities.
Today we are Tuia Waitākere.
Our new name reflects the evolution of our work - from sport participation to a broader focus across community sport, arts, movement and culture, with the wellbeing of West Aucklanders at the centre.
Tuia means to weave and bring together. That idea of connection - between people, place and purpose - continues to guide how we work.
We are the same people, working alongside schools, marae, clubs, workplaces and community leaders across Waitākere. Our new name makes our direction clearer.

We also acknowledge mana whenua, Te Kawerau Iwi Tiaki Trust, who walked alongside us throughout this process. Their connection to this place is woven into our identity - including the kōkōwai, the burnt red that grounds our new look in the whenua of Waitākere.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mahi Tahi whose deep collaboration and creative expertise were instrumental in bringing Tuia Waitākere to life. It was a privilege to work alongside a team who took the time to deeply understand who we are.
