How do you power a world-scale Verbund site with 100% renewable electricity? Our new Verbund site in Zhanjiang demonstrates how to grow in the world’s largest chemicals market with a lower carbon footprint from day one. Since the beginning, the site has been supplied with 100% electricity from renewable sources through long-term power supply agreements, including with State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) and China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (GEDI). To complement these contracts, BASF has also formed a joint venture with Mingyang Wind Power Group to develop, build and operate an offshore wind farm in Zhanjiang. With a planned capacity of 500 megawatts, the wind farm’s grid connection has already been completed and operations are scheduled to start in 2026. BASF Renewable Energy , the BASF unit responsible for the Group’s energy procurement, structures and manages these long-term renewable power agreements and projects, ensuring reliable access to renewable electricity for our Zhanjiang Verbund site. By combining long-term renewable power agreements with dedicated newly built capacity, we are strengthening energy security for a complex Verbund site, while contributing to our ambition to enable our customers’ green transformation. Transformation, innovation, sustainability — a look at the story of energy at BASF Ludwigshafen shows how progress and responsibility have evolved side by side for more than 160 years. It starts in an unexpected place: coal. More than 160 years after BASF was founded, the Ludwigshafen site looks very different. Many of the brick smokestacks are gone — replaced by more modern, more sustainable infrastructure. The takeaway is simple: Change isn’t a finish line. It’s an ongoing process and essential to finding and scaling sustainable energy for the future. Discover the complete story in this issue of our newsletter “The BASF Story”.

What does it really take for an industrial site to be future-ready – and how can we tell? In a constantly changing world, new challenges continue to emerge. Geopolitical and economic developments also shape the chemical industry, often requiring swift adaptation. At the same time, it is just as important to build on experience and proven strengths, without becoming confined by established ways of thinking. This balance is at the heart of BASF’s approach. And the Ludwigshafen site plays a central role in making it a reality. Here, one of BASF’s greatest strengths becomes clear: the courage and ability to evolve while staying true to itself — a quality that has defined the company since its founding in 1865. Same spot – six years later. A bold vision – now reality. From bare ground to a flagship for smart and sustainable chemistry. A world-scale Verbund site built through the power of partnership. I’m proud of what #TeamBASF has achieved in Zhanjiang 💪. Engineers tackled every challenge along the way. Construction teams worked through heat and rain – never compromising on safety. Government authorities provided support at every step. Customers put their trust in us. To everyone involved – from Zhanjiang to all around the world: THANK YOU for your determination and commitment. The inauguration is a big milestone – but not the finish line. It’s the starting point for a new chapter in BASF’s long success story in Asia. Markets and geopolitics have changed since the first shovel hit the ground. But our belief in this region’s drive has never wavered. We will innovate and grow in China – creating value for our customers as we fill the capacities we’ve built. Collaboration delivers the best results. Let’s keep going. #IloveBASF #wegotthis #BASFZhanjiang
