Great analogy Jane Arnold. Most organisations aren't measuring it, but they're absolutely paying for it. The trick is to address before it compounds.
How do you know if you have data quality debt? Most companies don’t measure it. But you can usually feel it. You probably have it if: • Engineers don’t trust the data without double-checking it • Analysts spend more time cleaning data than actually using it • Two dashboards give different answers to the same question • “Let’s validate that” comes up in almost every meeting • Models work in testing—but struggle in production None of these look like major failures. That’s what makes it tricky. They feel… normal. But over time, they add up. They slow decisions down. They create hesitation. They introduce just enough doubt to erode trust. That’s data quality debt. And like any form of debt - you’re paying interest on it every day.
