We’re excited and proud to see the results of this project. While this is a pilot, it shows the application and the potential for drone-based B2B on-demand delivery. Aerialoop’s vision of a multi modal hub and spoke urban delivery system is moving in the right direction. Big thanks go to Newlab, Michigan Central and Beacon Manufacturing for making this a reality. And also to Airspace Link, Inc. who provides a crucial piece of the puzzle to integrate drones into airspace, and who has been supporting us in various projects. #DroneLogistics #DroneDelivery
Manufacturing at scale requires highly tuned logistics, and Detroit is leveraging aerial technology to build this future. Newlab member Aerialoop, a drone manufacturer and operator with more than 40,000 flights across Latin America, is proving the viability of middle-mile drone cargo delivery in Michigan. Since June, Aerialoop has piloted operations at Michigan Central with partner Beacon Manufacturing, transporting parts from Newlab’s shop facilities directly to Beacon’s production space at The 23rd. By efficiently and reliably moving components across a distributed campus, the pilot demonstrates how drones reduce resource demands, keeping teams focused on higher-value work. Enabled by Michigan Central’s Advanced Aerial Innovation Region (AAIR), with cyberphysical infrastructure that includes the rooftop Launchpad at Newlab and digital UTM systems, the team has already completed 600 flights, a total distance the equivalent of Detroit to Chicago, all at an energy cost of just $5.66. We're proud to celebrate this milestone with Michigan Central, Michigan Department of Transportation, MI Office of Future Mobility and Electrification, Airspace Link, Inc., and Aerialoop, and to continue proving the value of advanced aerial mobility in manufacturing environments while showcasing the strength of Detroit. See the pilot in action and learn more about how to get involved with AAIR and AAM projects in the state of Michigan.

We are excited to support the growing Advanced Air Mobility ecosystem in Detroit. From donuts to critical medical supplies, as BVLOS drone deliveries scale, we plan to expand our local manufacturing—bringing faster deliveries and, more importantly, creating advanced manufacturing and engineering jobs for this great city. Thanks Michigan Central, Airspace Link, Inc. Newlab, City of Detroit, its great to be part of the team.
More exciting progress today for the Advanced Aerial Mobility industry! Michigan Central, Aerialoop and Yellow Light Coffee and Donuts conducted Detroit's longest-ever delivery flight bringing donuts from Michigan Central’s Launchpad to City of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan at Hart Plaza. Aerialoop, a drone delivery network company and Newlab Detroit member, utilized the 3-mile radius Advanced Aerial Innovation Region (AAIR) as well as Airspace Link, Inc.'s AirHub Portal which provides pre-flight check, safety, and tracking technology. Additionally, the 2.3-mile flight was a demonstration of the Michigan Central ecosystem’s Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) progress, which enables drones to travel further distances beyond where drone operators can physically see. BVLOS is one of the most difficult regulatory and technical hurdles in the industry, and is the foundation to transform drones from short-range tools into scalable systems that drive safety, efficiency, access, and economic growth. The day included two other BVLOS drone flights from Michigan Central to construction workers at Ralph C. Wilson Park, coordinated with the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. Furthermore, the operator of all flights was an 18-year-old graduate of workforce training programs at Michigan Central through CODE313 – an example of the growing career opportunities in the emerging aerial mobility industry. Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) will redefine transportation in the coming decades, expanding access to delivery of goods and critical supplies, driving efficiencies across industrial supply chains, improving infrastructure inspection, and transforming how societies operate. Today’s activity highlights the urban drone advancement made possible by the Michigan Central ecosystem and ongoing collaboration between startups, industry partners, the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan, including MI Office of Future Mobility and Electrification and Michigan Department of Transportation.

Another milestone for Detroit’s Advanced Aerial Innovation Region (AAIR) and the aerial mobility work at Michigan Central. Aerialoop has officially launched a middle-mile cargo drone pilot between Newlab at Michigan Central and a repurposed industrial site nearby that houses flexible production for emerging hardware companies. Using shared infrastructure, digital airspace management from Airspace Link, Inc., and Federal Aviation Administration clearance for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flights, this pilot shows what’s possible when industry, government, and innovators collaborate to solve real urban challenges. Together, we’re proving Detroit can lead the way in scaling advanced aerial mobility—safely, sustainably, and at city scale. Check back later this week to see an Aerialoop deployment in action!
