LimbPower were excited to be part of the planning for The Winter Mini Challenge. This is a brilliant way to inspire children over the winter to keep both minds and bodies active. The challenge encourages children to keep up their reading over the winter holidays and offers rewards and prizes for continuing to read.

The Youth Sport Trust teamed up with the Reading Agency again for this year’s Winter Mini Challenge, a free reading adventure. The challenge was launching on Friday 1 December,

Following the success of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, the Winter Mini Challenge will continue to follow the Ready, Set Read! theme throughout the winter. By taking part online via the Challenge website, children will be able to join this year’s six characters as they head out to have fun on a winter walk.

The characters, illustrated by Loretta Schauer, will get children fired up about games, sport and play, with the Ready, Set, Read! theme of the challenge, aiming to keep children’s minds and bodies active over the winter holiday. Children can log their reads and share reviews on the digital platform and earn rewards for their reading, with many public libraries across the UK offering themed events and activities.

During the school holidays, some children experience a ‘dip’ in their reading skills. The Winter Mini Challenge is on a mission to change this by providing a way for children to keep reading for enjoyment outside the classroom. Accompanying resources which can be downloaded through the digital platform will help families and teachers to provide free and fun activities over the holiday.

The post Get Ready for a Winter Reading Adventure first appeared on Limbformation.

Coming into post as your new Operations Lead I took to the road to come and meet some of you in
person, to understand Reach and all that you do. Honestly, I am really impressed. Reach is more than a national charity, it’s a family, with real people, young and old(er) all over the country volunteering their time to help families, and make a difference in the lives of children and young people with upper limb difference:

People like June near York, inspired by her amazing granddaughter Lexie, to fundraise for Reach at the village fete this summer and Tracey, Branch Coordinator for the West Midlands, her husband Jason and the whole family helping to run a fantastic branch meeting at their local community hall with families coming from all over the Midlands to join in soft play, ball games, lunch, scrummy cakes and a science workshop.

Tracey & Jason are already busy planning a Reach Sports Day for the Summer – Midland members – WATCH THIS SPACE!

I’ve been to see the hotel in Gateshead where the Annual Family Weekend is going to be held in the autumn and it’s lush! I’ve driven past Thirsk where this year’s RAW is running. I’ve drunk a lot of coffee in a lot of coffee shops with Branch Coordinators: Joanne (Berkshire), Sue (Northern), Melissa (South Wales) and had online meetings with Branch Coordinators from all over the country who have given me their time to help me learn what’s going well and what me, Ashley and the Reach Trustees can do to help make it even better! THANK YOU – to use a north London colloquialism “You is amazing!”

Please may I end with a quote given to me by someone recounting her sons’ first trip to RAW. Like most of us would be, this mum was feeling a bit worried as her son got on the bus. But he turned to her and said:

‘Don’t worry mum – I’m with my people’.
https://reach.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/WR-Spring-2023-online.pdf

The post On the road with Reach! first appeared on Limbformation.

LimbPower Launches New LimbTalk Video Series for Limbformation to Inspire and Support Children with Limb Loss and Limb Difference and their Families.

LimbPower, the National Disability Sports Organisation for amputees and people with limb difference, is proud to announce the launch of a new series of 11 beneficiary videos that showcase different aspects of living with limb loss and limb difference. The videos feature children, young people and their families who have participated in LimbPower’s events and programmes, sharing their personal stories and experiences of engaging in school PE, making friends as a disabled person, negotiating family dynamics, and more.

The video series aims to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities that children and families with limb loss and limb difference face, as well as to inspire and support others who may be going through similar situations. The videos also highlight the positive impact that physical activity, sport, and art can have on the physical, social and psychological well-being of amputees and people with limb impairments.

The videos will be released weekly on LimbPower’s YouTube channel[1]starting from Monday 26th June 2023.

Kiera Roche, the founder and CEO of LimbPower, said: “We are delighted to launch this video series, which showcases the amazing stories of some of our beneficiaries. We hope that these videos will inspire and empower other children, young people and their families as well as educate the wider public about the realities of living with a disability. We are very grateful to all the children and families who agreed to share their experiences with us, and to our funders Starworks and partners The Youth Sport Trust who made this project possible.”

Shiver me timbers, LimbPower and UR:Enabled launch swashbuckling adapted pirate exercise videos for limb different pirate children!

Introducing the Adventures of Captain Jetz and the limb different Pirate Crew – a brand-new animated series of exercise videos for children with upper and lower limb differences, which the whole family of buccaneers can join in! Join Captain Jetz and his crew of limb different pirates as they set sail on the Jolly Lolly on a journey filled with fitness, fun, and excitement!

Each episode is a bite-sized workout that children can easily follow, with three different levels of difficulty to choose from. With a total of 24 episodes, children will have plenty of opportunities to get their heart rate pumping and muscles moving.

The series starts with a welcome video where UR: Enabled founder Miranda Asher introduces the children to Captain Limb and his crew, setting the scene for the pirate-themed workout adventure that’s about to unfold. The workout itself is full of pirate-inspired terminology and movements to keep children engaged and excited. They’ll learn to walk the plank, climb the tower, and row the boat – all while working up a sweat!

The series includes a warm-up and cool-down video, so children can get their bodies ready for the workout and cool down safely afterwards. The warm-up and cool-down videos are designed to help prevent injury and promote flexibility. Warm up with Captain Jez and his limb different friends Merri the Starfish, Flots the Narwhal and Archie the Dolphin. You can download the images for the warm-up from the LimbPower website www.limbpower.com.

The Adventures of Captain Limb and the Pirate Crew was created by UR:Enabled and co-produced with the charity and National Disability Sports Organisation LimbPower. The project was funded by The True Colours Trust and LimbPower, both of which are committed to helping children with limb differences live full and active lives.

When using the videos at home, be sure to also incorporate the safety instructions and modifications for different abilities and skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned swashbuckler or a first-time sailor, there’s something for everyone in the Adventures of Captain Limb and the Pirate Crew!

LimbPower could not undertake projects like this without the financial support we received from Sport England as a recognised National Disability Sports organisation and system partner.

The Youth Sport Trust is excited to be partnering with The Reading Agency for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge to keep children’s minds and bodies active over the summer break.

This year the theme is ‘Ready, Set, Read!’ and delivered in partnership with public libraries, the Challenge will empower young people to forge new connections with others and unleash the power of play, sport and physical activity through reading.

Children are challenged to get reading over the summer holidays. From July to September children can take part for free, receive incentives and join a superstar team and marvelous mascots as they navigate a fictional summer obstacle course brought to life with illustrations by children’s illustrator Loretta Schauer.

Ali Oliver MBE, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said:

“We know for too many children reading and physical activity levels fall during the summer school holidays, setting them back in terms of literacy and physical development. This is why as a national children’s charity, we are delighted to be partnering with the Summer Reading Challenge this year. We are working together to bring brilliant and imaginative stories to life through movement.

“There is an exciting growing body of research which shows physically active children achieve higher levels of academic attainment than their less physically active peers. Movement plays an important part in brain function. Not only that, but physical activity supports better health and wellbeing, and we know healthy and happy children achieve more.

“Attitudes towards physical activity in childhood track into adulthood so it’s hugely important we give all young people a positive experience, and recognise the contribution sport, play, and physical activity make in helping young people to learn and develop physically, socially and emotionally.”

The Summer Reading Challenge shines a light on the power of public libraries as a hub for local communities and will bring together the benefits of sport, play and creativity. The Youth Sport Trust has developed fun family activity cards, which alongside the official 2023 Summer Reading Challenge book collection, will aim to keep imaginations moving over the school holidays. The Challenge and activity cards are available to access through the online digital platform (summerreadingchallenge.org.uk) to allow those with limited physical access to a library to join in. By participating in the challenge, young people will have the opportunity to explore new reading material, develop skills, and discover new interests.

This year, the Youth Sport Trust is also piloting active equipment packs in five libraries across the UK. These packs will be available for families to borrow alongside books from the Challenge. The equipment packs will include hard copies of the activity cards and basic sports equipment to support families to be active, irrespective of space and cost barriers. Details of libraries participating in the equipment pilot will be available through the digital platform.

The Summer Reading Challenge has been running since 1999 and helps to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’ that many young people experience during their summer holidays while schools are closed.

With the help of local libraries, the Summer Reading Challenge is accessible to all and provides a fun, free activity for children. In 2022, it reached 723,184 children and families across the UK, with 608,015 children taking part through their local library service, a 31% increase compared to 2021. The Challenge also drove 132,223 new children’s library memberships which is 40% higher than the 2019 pre-pandemic total.

Karen Napier, CEO, The Reading Agency, said:

“We are really delighted to be partnering with the Youth Sport Trust for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. Building on the successes of last year and the significant increase in library sign-ups, we can see there is real demand from families to have in-person activity to get involved in over the holiday. This year’s ‘Ready, Set, Read!’ theme provides the perfect opportunity to get children together to have fun and enjoy the power of reading.”

For more information, visit www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk. Sign-ups for the online Summer Reading Challenge open in June 2023. The Challenge launches in public libraries on 24 June (Scotland) and 8 July (England/Wales).

The post ‘Ready, Set, Read!’ for Summer Reading Challenge first appeared on Limbformation.
