THE NOAHIDE LAWS

The Seven Laws of Noah come from the Babylonian Talmud, tractate Sanhedrin 56a, and Rabbinic Judaism holds them binding on all of humanity without exception. Every Gentile nation on earth falls under this jurisdiction, whether they consented to it or not, whether they have ever heard of it or not, and whether Greg Abbott has ever mentioned it at a campaign rally or not. The laws prohibit idolatry, blasphemy, murder, sexual immorality, theft, and eating flesh torn from a living animal, and they require courts of justice to be established. Seven rules. Sounds modest, right?. As always, the devil is in the details. And when the fine print is written by Jewish legal experts, the devil is definitely in the footnotes.

The penalties for violating the Noahide laws are capital. Sanhedrin 56a prescribes execution by decapitation for Noahides (Gentiles under the law) convicted of capital offenses. Sanhedrin 57a goes further. The Jewish Encyclopedia, published in 1906 and drawing directly from the Talmudic text, states it plainly: “With but a few exceptions, the punishment meted out to a Noachid for the transgression of any of the seven laws is decapitation.” It then specifies that the Gentile defendant “may be convicted on the testimony of one witness, even on that of relatives, but not on that of a woman. He need have had no warning from the witnesses, and a single judge may pass sentence on him.” None of those procedural shortcuts applies to Jewish defendants. Maimonides codified the same asymmetry in the Mishneh Torah, Laws of Kings 9:14. There are two distinct peoples, one legal system, and different rules for each, depending upon whether you’re Jewish or Gentile.

But the idolatry prohibition under Noahide Laws is where this gets personal for Christians. Maimonides, the most authoritative legal voice in the history of Rabbinic Judaism, ruled unambiguously that Christianity constitutes avodah zarah, forbidden idolatry, for all people, Jews and Gentiles alike. Under his ruling, Trinitarian Christianity is not a Noahide-compliant religion. Later authorities softened that position under various medieval social pressures, and some modern rabbis extend Noahide status to Christians on the grounds that Christian monotheism, however theologically deficient in their estimation, does not qualify as outright paganism. But the point is, under the Noahide framework, it is the rabbinic courts that make that determination whether Christianity carries a capital offense, not Christians.

For example, GotQuestions.org, a mainstream evangelical resource used by millions, acknowledges this and reads, “The Talmud calls for capital punishment for Gentiles who violate the Noahide Laws.” Some Jews disagree with this and claim that the Rabbinic rulings from the Middle Ages are not as authoritative as modern Rabbis, who know that Israel’s survival depends upon the special favors given it by evangelical Christians in the American Bible Belt. You’ll still find plenty of modern Rabbis posting the opposite on YouTube, speaking directly to their local synagogue or study group, longing for the day that Christians can finally be put to death for idolatry. In any event, the question of whether your worship of Jesus Christ constitutes a capital offense is an open question in Talmudic jurisprudence, and the people answering it are not Christians.

Chabad.org states the underlying jurisdictional logic in plain English, drawing from the Encyclopedia Talmudit: non-Jews living under Jewish governance have no “sovereign jurisdiction of their own.” Jews are judged by Torah law everywhere in the world. Gentiles are judged by the Noahide Law as administered by Jewish authority. If Greg Abbott read those exact words in an Arabic document about Islamic governance, he would have them on a billboard by morning and a Fox News segment by afternoon, and probably have them surrounded by Texas Rangers and have them perp-walked to a Texas prison somewhere by supper time.

I wish to disabuse you of something you’ve probably believed since you were ten years old. Only a third of you have been subjected to the American public school version of history, but that version has permeated throughout the world. After all, the winners get to write the history books. What Americans are taught about their so-called “Civil War” is, in good measure, a fairy tale.

Let’s start by getting the terminology right. It wasn’t a “civil war.” A civil war is a conflict in which two or more factions fight for control of the same government. That’s not what happened. The South wasn’t trying to take over the North. Their sole objective was to leave the Union. That made it a war of secession. Calling it a civil war is propaganda—framing Southerners as rebels and insurgents rather than people who simply wanted to go their own way. Some call it the War of Northern Aggression, a name which might have stuck if the Confederacy had won. I prefer to be neutral, so I will call it the War Between the States.

The standard narrative holds that the noble North, led by the saintly Abraham Lincoln,

fought the evil South to free the slaves.

Full stop. Now, more than any time in the past, that’s the whole story as far as most Americans are concerned. It’s on a par with believing that Spain blew up the battleship Maine to start the Spanish-American War,

or that World War I was fought to “make the world safe for democracy.”

I’ll reserve comment on more recent wars. But good propaganda always contains a kernel of truth, even while truth is always the first casualty in a war.

So, what were the causes of the War Between the States, which started April 12, 1861, with the bombardment of Ft. Sumter in Charleston harbor, and ended April 9, 1865, with the surrender of Lee at Appomattox?

Slavery was certainly a major element of the conflict. But reducing the bloodiest war in American history—700,000 dead, which in per-capita terms would be about seven million today—to a single cause is not just intellectually lazy and dishonest. It’s dangerous.

So let me walk you through what happened. I think you’ll find it’s far more interesting than the storybook version—because it involves economics, power politics, exploitation of one part of a country by another part, and international intrigue.

In the country’s earlier days, Americans saw themselves as citizens of a state, not the US. Even so, by 1860, the United States was no longer one country in any meaningful economic sense. It was two countries with diametrically opposed economic interests that happened to share a flag and a constitution.
