BLM Issues OHV Route Closures in West Mojave Desert

In response to a federal court order it receive in January 2026, the BLM has closed approximately 2,200 miles of OHV routes in designated Desert Tortoise Critical Habitat in the western Mojave Desert for OHV Recreation. G26 California OHV Grant Applications – Public Review and Comment

The Friends of Jawbone is inviting the public to comment on its preliminary grant applications to the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle (OHMVR) Division to help manage off-highway vehicle recreation opportunities on public lands.

You can reach the Friends of Jawbone by calling (760) 373-1146. Our hours are from 8:30am – 4:00pm, 7 days a week. Closed for lunch: 1:00pm – 1:30pm.

You can visit the Jawbone Station Visitor Center at 28111 Jawbone Canyon Rd, Mojave, CA 93501, by turning in from Highway 14, approximately 20 miles north of Mojave.

We welcome you to visit the Jawbone Station Visitor Center, open from 8:30am-4:00pm. Get your maps, books, t-shirts, “Keep Kern Clean” bags, Campfire Permits, and CA nonresident OHV Permits all at our top of the line Gift Shop. Stop by and grab a Friends of Jawbone sweater to stay warm! Begin your tour of the Eastern Kern County area at Jawbone Station, located on Highway 14, just 20 miles north of Mojave. The station provides information, maps, books, and other services to off-roaders, tourists, hikers, bikers, and equestrians.

Monthly Stakeholder Meetings

Friends of Jawbone hosts monthly stakeholder meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at 9:00 AM. These stakeholder meetings are held at the BLM Jawbone Station Visitor Center, located at 28111 Jawbone Canyon Road, off of Highway 14, 20 miles north of Mojave. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Regular participants include representatives of: Kern County Supervisors, Kern County Sheriff, Kern County Board of Trade, BLM’s Ridgecrest Field Office, California City, Red Rock Canyon State Park, Honda Proving Center, and the Jawbone Station Staff.
