IMO –
the International Maritime Organization – is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. IMO's work supports the UN sustainable development goals.
Two regional workshops to support implementation of IMO’s International Safety Management (ISM) Code have taken place in Panama and Antigua and Barbuda (March 2026). The workshops strengthened cooperation and alignment among maritime administrations and industry stakeholders across Latin America and the Caribbean.
The IMO-Republic of Korea SMART-C Women Project is empowering women across the Asia-Pacific maritime sector through specialized online training – opening pathways to broader career opportunities and fostering a more balanced and diverse workforce. In the largest cohort to date, 40 female maritime professionals from Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste & Viet Nam took part in the 2026 sessions (2-6 and 16-20 March).
IMO is preparing to launch the second audit cycle of the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS) with a revised Framework and Procedures.
