ONLINE: The Last Orca Captures: A 50-Year Legacy
They were chased with speedboats, corralled by explosives, and separated from their families by nets. For over a decade, orcas were captured in Washington’s waters and transported to marine parks to be put on display for entertainment. The capture era ended fifty years ago this month, when public outrage over a shocking roundup of six orcas in Budd Inlet near Olympia led to a federal court settlement that permanently banned orca captures in Washington waters. But the Southern Resident orcas still bear the scars, and the environmental and cultural effects continue to ripple outward…
