GOODProjects at Washington Wizards Honoring Black History Month

As part of their “Our Community, Our History” campaign at their February 10th home game, the Washington Wizards highlighted GOODProjects and our work empowering Black youth and families to live fulfilling lives free of poverty. Black history is 365 days a year for us, but we are especially honored to celebrate the GOODWork with Wizards Nation during Black History Month.

Southwest Garden Fest stands up to gun violence

In light of recent gun violence, we built three new Peace Gardens with SWBID

Four days before hundreds of Washingtonians were set to attend a festival celebrating their community, gun violence shook the neighborhood. Five people were hurt and one woman was killed in a drive-by, causing a chain-reaction of retaliatory shootings.

Residents were afraid to go outside. Children weren't allowed out to play.

We knew we had to do something.

Southwest Garden Fest was a one-day festival highlighting safe community spaces. Hundreds of people came out to enjoy food, music, dancing, and art in the open, and to take a stand against gun violence. The centerpiece of the festival was the unveiling of three new Peace Gardens strategically located near public housing complexes. These gardens in the James Creek, Syphax, and Greenleaf neighborhoods offer a beautiful, nourishing place for residents.

Dozens of our nonprofit partners came out to meet Southwest DC residents and show all the ways they can help. Southwest Garden Fest sent a powerful statement that Southwest DC is thriving and taking community spaces back from fear.
