Hazeltine hosting top LPGA pros for KPMG Women’s PGA Championship

In less than two weeks, the best female golfers in the world will descend on the Twin Cities for the LPGA’s third major championship of the tour season.

Women’s PGA Championship returns to Hazeltine

Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska is the 2026 site for the KMPG Women’s PGA Championship, June 25-28. It’s the latest major championship to come to Minnesota.

"It’s great, it’s wonderful to have 156 of the world’s best come back to Hazeltine. Seven years ago, we had the 2019 KMPG PGA Championship and it’s very exciting. This is what the club loves to do, part of our mission statement and we’re blessed to have them return," Kyle Brandt, head PGA professional at Hazeltine, said earlier this week at media day.

It also means two major golf events are in Minnesota in the span of the month. At the end of July, TPC Twin Cities in Blaine is hosting the PGA’s 3M Open.

‘Hazeltine is built for major championships’

This year’s KMPG Women’s PGA Championship is the 11th major Hazeltine has hosted. They’re also celebrating 60 years of women’s golf at the club, with the first major they hosted being the 1966 U.S. Women’s Open.

Hazeltine has become a standard when it comes to venues hosting major events. The club says it’s their mission statement to host majors, even club members are on board when they sign membership agreements. About 300 members will be volunteering at the event.

They’ve got the support from the tour, members and the infrastructure to host major events.

"When we sign our membership agreements, we all agree to investing in these championships, including being involved. We all volunteer, it’s our mission statement to host championship golf an it’s really in our DNA," said Greta Siedow, a former Hazeltine employee who is now the general chair for the KMPG Women’s PGA Championship.

Here are the other majors Hazeltine has hosted, in addition to the 2019 and 2026 Women’s PGA Championship:

U.S. Women’s Open (1966 and 1970)

U.S. Open (1970 and 1991)

1983 U.S. Senior Open

2002 PGA Championship

U.S. Amateur (2006 and 2024)

Ryder Cup (2016 and 2029)

Hazeltine will become the first American venue to host a Ryder Cup twice. It’s also hosted several other USGA-sanctioned events, and the NCAA Tournament.

"Hazeltine represents so much. It’s the actual course and true test of champions, and that has it. It also has the support of the community, their leadership, their board, their membership that want to make this a championship operation and make this course a destination for championships," said Terry Clark, CEO of the PGA of America. "It also has a lot of the infrastructure to meet the modern game and the number of fans. All those come together and it stands out."

The tournament

The field will consist of the best 156 players on the LPGA Tour. They’ll face every test imaginable from water to lightning-fast green and rough as thick as three inches. Brandt says they can make the course as difficult as it needs to be for major championship standards.

"It starts from the first tee all the way to the last putt. We’ve got narrow fairways, we’ve got some big bunkers, we can be as long as we need to be but can also trim it back a little bit. The ladies are going to play 6,500 to 6,700 yards, which is our normal gold tee. We can stretch it all the way back to 7,500 yards," Brandt said.

The PGA is constantly making efforts to grow the game of golf. More than eight million women played golf in 2025. At this year’s tournament, up to four kids 15-and-under can get in free with one ticketed adult.

Nelly Korda chasing history?

The LPGA features five major tournaments every year. Nelly Korda, the No. 1 player in the world, won the first two in the Chevron and most recently the U.S. Women’s Open. That featured a thrilling finish as she nearly missed a two-foot putt that would’ve forced a playoff. She comes to Hazeltine with a chance to continue the season-long grand slam.

"Nelly is on such a great ride right now, and the opportunity to come here and what that could be here is amazing. It’s an easy one to say that we’re excited to see Nelly at the top of her game," Clark said.

In her way are Hannah Green, who won the 2019 tournament when Hazeltine last hosted it, and defending champion Minjee Lee, among a host of others.

The tournament gives Minnesota golf fans a chance to watch the best in the women’s game compete at the highest level.

"Just come out and celebrate women’s golf. It’s a great experience to root along 156 of the best in the world," Brandt said.

MN lawmaker shootings: Hoffman family reacts to Vance Boelter guilty plea

Vance Boelter on Thursday accepted a plea deal in the June 14, 2025, shootings of state lawmakers Melissa Hortman, John Hoffman and their spouses in exchange for prosecutors to not seek the death penalty.

Minnesota lawmaker shootings

The politically-motivated attacks killed Hortman and her husband, Mark, and both Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times at their Champlin home. Boelter pleaded guilty to all six federal charges and could serve two life sentences in prison, plus 40 years.

Both the Hortman and Hoffman families were in the courtroom Thursday when Boelter opted to change his plea.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office said it is still moving forward with state charges against Boelter.

Hoffman family: ‘There is no justice for Mark and Melissa Hortman’

Shortly after Boelter changed is plea to guilty in the shootings, the Hoffman family released the following statement:

"There is no justice for Mark and Melissa Hortman, and there is not justice when our family and our state will never truly heal. While the legal process may provide accountability, true healing requires something more from all of us.

"The choice we’ve made is to go forward with public service and present for our community. The opportunity to justice is for Minnesota and Americans to serve is to treat people with respect, to stop de-humanizing each other and to stop dividing our country with hate and rhetoric."

John Hoffman returns to Capitol

Back in February, the 2026 Minnesota legislative session started with House leaders holding a remembrance for Melissa Hortman, who was fatally shot at her Brooklyn Park home last June.

Hoffman, after months of being hospitalized and in recovery, walked up the Capitol steps and entered Senate chambers to a standing ovation. Hoffman was shot nine times on the morning of June 14, 2025. His wife, Yvette, was wounded eight times. Their daughter, Hope, had a gun pointed to her head and was able to call 911 to get help to their Champlin home.

"Man it is really good to be back in this chamber with all of you. Over the past few months, my family and I have walked through a chapter that changes a person. When you survive an attempted assassination, you look at the world differently," Hoffman said. "The noise fades, and that posturing fades. The chatter becomes irrelevant. What remains is what is truly important – Family, community and the responsibility that we have to care for one another."

Washington County cold case: DNA genealogy names victim 33 years after dismemberment

A decades-old murder mystery has finally reached a turning point, but investigators say there is still much work ahead.

Breakthrough DNA evidence identifies victim after decades

Washington County investigators confirmed that scientific advancements in DNA analysis and genealogy helped them identify the woman dismembered in 1993 as Denise Hartley. "It's very exciting news," said Det. Clayton Evens, Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Police found a foot at Pig’s Eye Lake in June 1993, just a day after discovering a severed head at Bone Lake, about 40 miles away. Hartley, 27, was the youngest of 15 siblings and had moved from Ohio to St. Paul in 1992, leaving her daughter with family. Despite a police sketch and ongoing efforts, investigators struggled to connect Hartley to the remains for years.

The only major clue at the time was a phone confession from an unidentified man who said more body parts could be found under the Mendota Bridge. Police could not trace the call, and a search of the area found nothing. "You know, it could have been the suspect. Absolutely. Could have just been some random person," said Evens.

For years, investigators had little to go on. "It came to a point where there was realistically not a lot else they could do," said Evens.

In 1993, the case baffled authorities. "I can't say whether there may be other victims. It's definitely a very sick person. It might be more than one person. Until we have her identity we have no idea what we have," said Capt. David Heuer, Washington County Sheriff's Office at the time.

There was no missing persons report for Hartley, and the police sketch did not resemble her earlier photos. This left investigators with almost no leads to follow, and the case stayed open for decades.

New technology opens doors for investigators

The DNA Doe Project played a key role by investing in genealogical testing, which pointed to a second cousin and then to Hartley’s daughter. New testing confirmed Hartley as the victim, providing closure for her family and opening new avenues for investigators.

"So now that's our job to really open this case up, to talk to anybody that we can actually figure out who she was with," said Evens. Investigators now plan to identify and interview any living acquaintances of Hartley, hoping to finally solve the case and bring justice for her.

The identification of Hartley offers her family long-awaited answers, but for the community and investigators, the search for her killer continues. The case highlights both the power of new forensic technology and the challenges that remain in solving cold cases.

Investigators hope that by reconnecting with Hartley’s past, they can find the person responsible for her death. They say they remain committed to bringing justice to her family and the community.

Authorities have not identified any suspects in Hartley’s killing, and it remains unclear who made the anonymous phone call in 1993.

Investigators are still working to determine who Hartley was with before her death and what led to her murder.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Washington County Sheriff's Office at 651-430-7850.

MN lawmaker shootings: Boelter to be prosecuted on state charges despite federal plea deal

Prosecutors are moving ahead with state charges against Vance Boelter for the June 2025 shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses despite his federal plea deal.

Vance Boelter still facing state charges

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office announced Thursday it is moving forward with their case against Boelter for the shootings that killed former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, and injured Sen. John Hoffman and members of his family.

The announcement comes shortly after Boelter pleaded guilty to all six federal charges related to the attacks on the Hortmans and Hoffmans, including stalking, murder and firearms. As part of the plea agreement, Boelter will serve two life sentences plus 40 years, in exchange for prosecutors not seeking the death penalty.

The HCAO emphasized the plea deal does not resolve or change the eight charges he is facing in Hennepin County court.

"Mr. Boelter will sit in a Hennepin County courtroom and be held accountable for his actions. We are in contact with the U.S. Attorney’s Office about transferring Mr. Boelter into our custody," Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. "This was a devastating wave of targeted political violence that shocked our state and the nation. My thoughts are with the Hoffmans, and with Mark and Melissa’s family and loved ones as the federal phase ends and we approach state prosecution."

What charges is Boelter facing?

Boelter was indicted by a grand jury in August 2025 on multiple state charges, including first-degree premeditated murder in the deaths of Melissa and Mark Hortman and attempted first-degree murder in the shootings of John Hoffman, Yvette Hoffman and Hope Hoffman.

The indictment also includes attempted first-degree murder of Rep. Kristin Bahner, felony animal cruelty related to the death of the Hortmans' dog, Gilbert, and impersonating a police officer.

The HCAO did not say when Boelter will appear in court for the state case.

Target Field workers announce planned strike during upcoming Twins vs. Dodgers game

Target Field concession workers announced they plan to strike when the L.A. Dodgers take on the Twins later this month if their demands are not met.

Target Field workers announce strike date

Secretary-Treasurer of UNITE HERE Local 17 Sheigh Freeberg said more than 500 concession workers will strike on Monday, June 22, during the Twins vs. Dodgers game if their demands for better health insurance, higher wages and more job protections are not met.

"The responsibility of that lies squarely, squarely with Delaware North Company and the Twins organization that employs Delaware North Company," Freeberg said.

Union leaders said the strike comes after months of contract talks where workers say they bargained in good faith, but Delaware North did not. The union claims the company proposed keeping most workers at minimum wage and offering only a 50-cent raise to others, while rejecting top union priorities.

Union members also raised concerns about faulty equipment and unfair treatment by supervisors and management.

Delaware North statement

Delaware North shared the following statement in response to the strike announcement:

"We look forward to continuing to negotiate in good faith a new contract with our valued employees at Target Field. It is our full intention that we will continue full-service concessions at Target Field should there be a strike.

"If UNITE HERE’s greed insists on displacing nonprofit fundraising, we believe the community will be deeply impacted. The decades-long partnerships we have with community groups that depend on concessions at Target Field for fundraising is something that reflect the values of the fans and residents of Minnesota."

White Bear Lake motorcycle crash leaves rider dead, SUV driver arrested on suspicion of DWI

An SUV driver was arrested for suspected DWI after he was involved in a crash that left a motorcycle rider dead in White Bear Lake.

Fatal motorcycle crash in White Bear Lake

The Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) said the crash happened just after 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 96 and Highway 61 in White Bear Lake.

A Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider was northbound on Highway 61 while a Jeep Compass was southbound on Highway 61.

The motorcycle and the SUV then collided at the intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 96.

Authorities say the motorcycle rider died as a result of the crash.

The SUV driver, a 63-year-old man from White Bear Lake, was then arrested on suspicion of DWI, according to MSP. He was then booked into Ramsey County Jail for DWI and criminal vehicular homicide.

Criminal charges have not yet been formally filed.

Details on what investigators believe led to the crash are expected to be shared when criminal charges are filed in Ramsey County Court.

Minnesota lawmaker shootings: Vance Boelter pleads guilty to all federal charges

Vance Boelter pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to charges stemming from the fatal shootings of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, and the shootings that injured Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman.

Vance Boelter pleads guilty to Minnesota lawmaker shootings

A federal grand jury indicted Boelter on six counts related to the attacks on the Hortmans and Hoffmans, including stalking, murder and firearms charges.

Boelter appeared for a 10 a.m. plea hearing at the federal courthouse in Minneapolis on Thursday, where he changed his plea from not guilty to guilty on all six counts. The plea deal calls for Boelter to serve two life sentences plus 40 years, in exchange for the government not seeking the death penalty.

"Political violence is a scourge in our nation," said United States Attorney Daniel N. Rosen in a statement. "We now expect Vance Boelter will spend the rest of his natural life in prison without parole. To all of those who would commit political violence: this Justice Department will seek and obtain the longest prison terms for your offense."

Boelter is accused of fatally shooting House Speaker Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman in their Brooklyn Park home, as well as shooting Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman in their Champlin home on June 14, 2025.

Prosecutors also allege he visited the Maple Grove home of Rep. Kristin Bahner while she and her family were out of town, then later went to the New Hope home of Sen. Ann Rest, and left the scene after encountering an officer who was conducting a welfare check. After a 43-hour statewide manhunt, Boelter was taken into custody.

"Mr. Boelter carried out a heinous and unprecedented act of political violence against Minnesota’s political leaders. Violence targeting public officials is an affront to our democracy," said Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans. "To the Hortman and Hoffman families, Minnesota continues to mourn the loss and the suffering you have endured. We hope today’s guilty plea brings you some measure of solace."

Hoffman family statement

The Hoffman family released a statement following the change of plea hearing.

"There is no justice for Mark and Melissa Hortman, and there is not justice when our family and our state will never truly heal.

"While the legal process may provide accountability, true healing requires something more from all of us.

"The choice we’ve made is to go forward with public service and being present for our community. The opportunity to justice is for Minnesotans and Americans to serve is to treat people with respect, to stop de-humanizing each other, and to stop dividing our country with hate and rhetoric."

Prosecutors moving forward with state charges

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office announced Thursday it is moving forward with its case against Boelter, and the federal plea deal does not charge or resolve the status of the charges.

"Mr. Boelter will sit in a Hennepin County courtroom and be held accountable for his actions. We are in contact with the U.S. Attorney’s Office about transferring Mr. Boelter into our custody," Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said in a statement. "This was a devastating wave of targeted political violence that shocked our state and the nation. My thoughts are with the Hoffmans, and with Mark and Melissa’s family and loved ones as the federal phase ends and we approach state prosecution."

It's unclear when Boelter will appear in court on the state charges.

Minnesota weather: Cooler and cloudier Thursday with scattered showers

A cooler and cloudier Thursday brings scattered showers to Minnesota before sunshine and warmer temperatures return Friday.

Thursday’s forecast in Minnesota

Thursday turns much cooler with northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph and temperatures holding in the low 70s. The Twin Cities metro daytime high is around 73 degrees.

Cloud cover increases through the morning before scattered showers develop by midday and continue through the afternoon. The best chance for rain in the metro looks to be during the mid to late afternoon hours.

A few breaks of sunshine may return late in the day, especially near sunset, before skies gradually clear overnight. Overnight lows are cooler in the mid to upper 50s.

Extended Minnesota weather forecast

Friday looks beautiful, with plenty of sunshine and highs returning to the low 80s. A weak cold front arrives Friday night, bringing a chance for a few isolated showers or rumbles before clearing out.

The weekend turns pleasant, with highs settling into the 70s and a mix of sunshine and passing clouds. That comfortable pattern continues into the middle of next week.

Here’s a look at the seven-day forecast:

MSP's Beagle Brigade: Meet the dogs sniffing out illegal food at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport

Some of the most important federal employees at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport have four legs and a powerful nose.

Beagle Brigade keeps airport safe from invasive pests

The Beagle Brigade at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is made up of beagles like Merla, Boone and Steelor, who work with Customs and Border Protection to sniff out foreign plants, animals or soil in travelers’ luggage.

Chief Phillip Holmes, agriculture specialist with Customs and Border Protection, said, "We have one main mission, and that is to protect the United States."

The dogs alert their handlers by sitting down when they detect something suspicious, such as a bundle of sticks brought from Somalia that could contain wood-burrowing insects.

Holmes said, "It's typically in Minneapolis, it's going to be those things that you forgot about, the airline gave you or the hotel gave you as a snack on your trip out here, apples, oranges, anything like that, a little sandwich, any of those kinds of things, they need to stop here."

The beagles have found everything from horse jerky from Mongolia to whale sausage from Norway.

Earlier this year, Merla sniffed out more than 100 pork sandwiches from Thailand, earning high praise and plenty of treats.

'They are training us as much as we are training them'

The Beagle Brigade started in Los Angeles in 1984 with just one dog and one trainer. Now, there are 120 beagles at 21 airports across the country.

The dogs are donated by private owners, breeders or rescue shelters and receive intensive training at the National Detector Dog Training Center outside Atlanta.

The Beagle Brigade’s work is crucial in preventing invasive insects and diseases from entering the United States. Their ability to detect a wide range of agricultural products helps stop potential threats before they spread.

Why beagles are chosen for the job

Beagles are selected for their sharp sense of smell, which is at least 40 times more sensitive than humans, and their friendly nature.

"They specifically chose Beagles because of their ability to interact with the public because they are friendly. And not as intimidating as many of the other dogs that we use for our other enforcement purposes," Holmes said.

The dogs are trained not only to target certain smells but also to behave well in busy airport environments.

Both Merla and Steelor are nearing retirement and are likely to be adopted by their handlers.

Holmes said, "I have not met anyone that didn't take their dog home when they retired. So then it becomes a part of their family."

The Beagle Brigade continues to play a vital role at the airport, building strong bonds with their handlers and keeping the country safe. Holmes said, "They mean a lot to us and yes they build bonds with all of us. I can't wait to see how it evolves."

HarMar Mall's future uncertain: Roseville officials say no formal redevelopment plans yet

The future of HarMar Mall in Roseville is up in the air as city officials and the property owner discuss what could be next for the once-bustling shopping center.

Community memories and changing times

City officials told FOX 9 there have been only "conceptual" discussions about HarMar Mall’s future, and no formal plans have been brought forward. The mall, which opened in 1963, was once a major shopping destination for the north metro but now has many vacant storefronts.

Jacob Baker, who grew up in Roseville, shared his memories of the mall. "I would like to see HarMar rebuilt. This is a huge part of my childhood," said Baker. He recalled, "I saw Pokémon in 2000 here, right? The first movie," and added, "It was popping, I mean, there was little tiny, like vendors all around the inside, right? I used to get little collector coins from my uncle all the time."

Longtime visitors like Joseph Donaghue have noticed the changes over the years.

"And so it's gone a complete overhaul change, and like everything has gone from when I got there, got here," said Donaghue.

Sarah Nelson, who visited from St. Paul, described the current feel of the mall.

"It feels vastly different. It does. You used to be able to walk inside and actually go from building to building, and now it feels like it's closed off," said Nelson.

The mall’s history stretches back more than six decades, but today, many storefronts are locked behind gates or stand empty.

City and owner discuss what’s next

City officials say there have been talks about possibilities for the property, but no redevelopment proposal has been submitted. Any future proposal would need to go through a review process before moving forward.

Fidelis Realty Partners, the company that owns HarMar Mall, told FOX 9 in a statement, "Fidelis is currently evaluating all options for the HarMar Mall property in Roseville. Revitalizing this important community asset will be a long-term process."

The mall’s uncertain future brings out both nostalgia and hope from those who have fond memories of visiting over the years.

It is not yet clear what specific plans, if any, will be proposed for HarMar Mall or when any redevelopment might move forward.

Man dies after being pinned under fallen tree in Douglas County

Authorities are investigating after a man was found dead under a fallen tree in northwestern Minnesota on Wednesday.

Emergency response to a man pinned under a tree in Brandon

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said a 78-year-old man was found pinned under a tree just before 11 a.m.

According to authorities, crews tried life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said the cause of death appears to be accidental. No further information about the man is being released until his family are notified.

The case is still under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities have not released the man’s name or further details about how the accident happened.

FOX 9 reached out to the sheriff's office to ask if the incident is related to severe weather and will update this story with their response.

Twin Cities storm: 25K lost power as damaging severe thunderstorm tore through metro

Storm damage from Wednesday morning’s severe weather has left some Twin Cities homes at risk for more trouble if rain returns soon.

Storm cleanup, roof repairs underway after overnight damage

A 40- to 50-foot branch broke off a tree around 3:15 a.m. and crashed onto a Roseville garage, roof and fence, causing significant property damage but no injuries. The homeowner had to buy a tarp to protect against more rain and possible flooding.

Neighbors described the storm as loud and intense, with winds strong enough to shake homes and bring down large limbs.

Lily Williamson said, "Came out to look for my cat and as I was looking for her, I heard a huge bang and the sheetrock in our garage came down."

She added, "When it came down, she said she felt a rumble like almost like an earthquake because it hit so hard. But my neighbor also said the same thing and she was sleeping upstairs in her bedroom and my daughter's in the basement. So it was kind of shook, shook both of our places."

Lexington Avenue trees down

Yards along the Lexington Avenue corridor in Ramsey County were covered in downed tree limbs, with fences and power lines damaged. Crews worked throughout the day to remove debris and restore power, but repairs for some homeowners could be costly.

More than 25,000 Xcel Energy customers lost power by 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. By 4 p.m., that number had dropped to about 3,500 as crews worked to restore service. Power never went out for Williamson, but her neighbors across the street experienced outages.

Williamson said, "Nobody was hurt. No pets were hurt. It's literally property damage, which we can fix."

The severe thunderstorm moved through the Metro area early Wednesday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. The damage was especially noticeable in Roseville, where large branches and trees fell on homes and power lines. Residents spent the day cleaning up and making temporary repairs to prevent further problems if more rain arrives.

Many people are still dealing with the aftermath, trying to keep their homes safe until permanent repairs can be made.

What we don’t know: It is not yet clear how many homes in Roseville remain vulnerable to flooding or if more storms are expected Wednesday night. The total cost of repairs and the timeline for full power restoration have not been confirmed.

Minnesota weather: Hoffman has widespread damage, power out after severe storms

Severe storms tore through parts of Minnesota late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, and the small town of Hoffman was hit especially hard.

Hoffman storm damage

City officials say a severe storm with damaging winds hit Hoffman, which is just west of Alexandria, at about 2 a.m. Wednesday. The storm caused widespread damage, including a train derailment, overturned campers and mobile homes, downed power lines and caused trees to fall onto buildings and vehicles.

Officials say the city is experiencing a community-wide power outage, but water and sewer services continue to operate normally. City officials say there are no reports of injuries or fatalities connected to the storm.

Train derailment and brush removal

The City of Hoffman, the Grant County Emergency Manager and the Grant County Sheriff’s Office are working with CP Railroad and Otter Tail Power as well as the American Red Cross. The focus is on restoring power and providing assistance to residents, and cleaning up the train derailment.

City officials are working on tree removal and clearing off streets. Residents removing downed trees and brush on their property can bring it to the city brush site.

City Hall open

Officials say Hoffman City Hall is open, and the American Red Cross is offering water and snacks to residents. Messiah Outreach is providing turkey sandwiches and chips at City Hall.

Watch out for scammers

The day after a storm is also usually when scammers are out trying to take advantage of residents with damage. City officials say all residents are encouraged to complete an assessment of their property, and notify the city of damage sustained from the storm, as well as notify their insurance company.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about possible scammers. Residents in need of tree removal or storm cleanup can get recommendations for local businesses from the city.

Residents are asked to stay away from Veterans City Park due to downed power lines.

Lake Nokomis beaches reopen 1 week after blue-algae advisory

A week after Minneapolis city officials closed the Lake Nokomis Main Beach and 50th Street Beach due to blue-green algae, they reopened to the public on Wednesday.

Blue-green algae advisory lifted

Officials with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board said Wednesday they’ve lifted the hazardous algae advisory for both beaches. The move comes after the most recent seasonal monitoring of blue-green algae toxins in Minneapolis lakes.

City officials say with the advisory being lifted, all 12 MPRB beaches are currently open.

Blue-green algae recommendations

City officials say even with the algae advisory being lifted, conditions can change quickly. They advise people heading to Minneapolis beaches to follow these recommendations regardless of conditions:

When in doubt, stay out: do not swim when a suspected hazardous algae bloom is present

Don’t play in algae scum or mats in the water or on the shore

If exposed to blue green algae, shower and rinse immediately

Swim Healthy Guidelines

Here are guidelines for staying healthy while swimming

Do not swim in water that looks like "pea soup" or spilled paint floating on the surface: Learn how to recognize and respond to blue-green algae.

Keep children and pets out of blue-green algae scum

Don’t swim if you or your child have diarrhea or are sick.

Wash your hands before eating and after changing a diaper.

Be careful to not get lake water in your mouth.

Avoid swimming for 48 hours after a rainfall when bacteria levels can be high.

Towel dry immediately after exiting the water to prevent Swimmer’s Itch.

Boelter set to change his plea from not guilty to guilty, federal court documents say

Federal court documents show Vance Boelter intends to change his plea after initially pleading not guilty.

Boelter is accused of fatally shooting a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband as well as wounding another lawmaker and his wife.

Minnesota lawmaker shooting suspect files intent to change plea

Documents filed in federal court show Boelter's counsel is requesting a change-of-plea hearing after federal prosecutors recently chose not to seek the death penalty.

That filing can be read below:

The change of plea hearing is set for 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, at the federal courthouse in Minneapolis.

Minnesota lawmaker shootings

Boelter is accused of shooting House Speaker Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman in their Brooklyn Park home, as well as shooting Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman in their Champlin home on June 14, 2025. Prosecutors also allege that same morning he stopped at the Maple Grove home of Rep. Kristin Bahner while she and her family were out of town, then later drove to the New Hope home of Sen. Ann Rest, and left the scene after encountering an officer who was conducting a welfare check.

A federal grand jury indicted Boelter on six counts related to the attacks of the Hortmans and Hoffmans, including stalking, murder and firearms charges. Federal prosecutors were deciding whether to pursue the death penalty in the case. However, sources tell FOX 9 that ultimately prosecutors determined that the crimes Boelter faced were not eligible for the death penalty under federal law.

State charges

In state court, a grand jury indicted Boelter in August 2025 on multiple charges, including first-degree premeditated murder in the deaths of Melissa and Mark Hortman and attempted first-degree murder in the shootings of John Hoffman, Yvette Hoffman and Hope Hoffman.

The indictment also includes attempted first-degree murder of Rep. Kristin Bahner, felony animal cruelty related to the death of the Hortmans' dog, Gilbert, and impersonating a police officer.

ICE agent charged in Hennepin County wants case moved to federal court

The ICE agent facing criminal charges in Hennepin County for allegedly pointing a gun at another driver on Highway 62 is now asking a judge to move his case to federal court.

ICE agent wants case moved

In a recent court filing, attorneys for ICE agent Gregory Donnell Morgan Jr. are asking for his case to be moved from Hennepin County Court to federal court.

The attorneys are making arguments under the Supremacy clause of the constitution, which provides federal agents some protections for acts committee during the course of their job.

Morgan faces two counts of assault in the gun-pointing incident during rush hour in February.

What he's accused of

According to the criminal complaint, Morgan was in a Ford Expedition driving illegally along the shoulder of Highway 62 near the Portland Avenue exit. The victim briefly moved onto the shoulder to block Morgan.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty says Morgan was driving a rented vehicle that had no markings indicating it was an ICE vehicle. The victim then pulled back into the normal traffic lane and said Morgan sped up alongside the victim's vehicle.

Once alongside the victim's vehicle, prosecutors say Morgan pulled out his service weapon and pointed his at both of the victims.

Morgan turned himself in and made his first court appearance in May.

Moriarty expected filing

In April, when charges were first announced against Morgan, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said she expected Morgan's attorney to mount a Supremacy clause defense.

However, Moriarty argued Morgan's alleged actions don't fall within the scope of his federal authority.

"Our opinion is that illegally driving on a shoulder, pulling up to a car and pointing a gun at the heads of two community members who are not doing anything at the time, is well beyond the scope of their authority as federal agents," said Moriarty. "So they may say that, but we will litigate that in court. And there is no such thing as absolute immunity for federal agents who violate the law in the State of Minnesota or any other state."

Moriarty said in April her office would fight the move to federal court. Regardless of the court, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office would continue to prosecute even if moved to federal court.

Restaurant owner faces backlash after saying he’d prefer to hire men over women

A restaurant owner’s comments about his preference for hiring male servers over women have sparked outrage and plans for a protest in Wisconsin.

Restaurant owner’s video sparks backlash

Tony Angelini, owner of Angelini's Ristorante on Highway 35 in Onalaska, Wisconsin, posted a 10-minute YouTube video where he and three other men discussed why the restaurant prefers to employ male servers than female servers.

In the video, Angelini said he prefers "hiring male over female all f****** day" and described female employees as "drama b******" who just b**** about everything."

He also cited what he called "biological factors" affecting women’s work performance, saying, "When they're on that time of the month, forget about it. Nobody can talk to them."

Matt Johnson, another man in the video, suggested female servers create problems with male customers.

Carm Fiore, also featured in the clip, claimed women cannot handle workplace stress as effectively as men, saying, "When they get overwhelmed, they can't deal with the stress, and they overreact a lot."

Angelini recently defended his statements to a local news outlet, arguing that male servers provide better customer service and generate more revenue, saying male servers "pay attention more to details" and remain "professional" without creating workplace drama.

"I don't give a f*** if you want to call me sexist. I don't give a f*** if I'm prejudiced," Angelini said.

The video quickly drew criticism from viewers, with many calling the comments discriminatory toward women.

In comments sections, the video sparked ongoing debate about workplace discrimination and gender equality in the service industry, with some calling for a boycott of Angelini's Ristorante.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, it is unlawful discrimination when sex or gender motivates employment decisions. State law prohibits discrimination in recruitment, hiring, job assignments, pay, leave or benefits, promotion, licensing or union membership, training, layoff and firing, harassment, and other employment-related actions.

Angelini has since clarified that while he prefers hiring male servers, he would hire female employees if they applied. He said he currently employs a female worker on a call-in basis who has a full-time job elsewhere and is looking for part-time help on weekends.

The video remains online, and Angelini says he has no plans to take it down.

Meanwhile, area residents are organizing a protest, with demonstrators planning to gather at the nearby roundabout on Highway 35 on Saturday afternoon, according to a Facebook event post.

Feeding our Future defendant surrenders to federal authorities in MN

The U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota and federal law enforcement officials held a press conference to announce the surrender of a defendant involved in the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme in Minnesota.

Authorities announced the arrest of Said Abdullahi Ereg, who was added to the FBI's new "Most Wanted Fraudsters" list last week.

Feeding our Future fraud

U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota Daniel Rosen began the news conference with the following announcement:

"I'm pleased to announce that at this hour, Said Abdullahi Ereg, one of the FBI's most wanted fugitive fraudsters, peaceably surrendered to federal law enforcement officers who were waiting when his plane from overseas landed at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport last Thursday."

READ MORE: MN fraud: Feeding Our Future suspect named on FBI's new ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ list

The FBI agent in charge of the investigation, shared the following statement:

"Just six days ago, the FBI added Said Abdullahi Ereg to the FBI's newly launched ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ list. Mr. Ereg is the first fraudster on that list to be taken into custody. The FBI and our partners who stand with me today will continue to leverage all resources to track down, arrest and prosecute fraud actors at every level and anywhere. The allegations against these most wanted fraudsters outline a gross disregard for the hardworking American taxpayer, and hijacking millions from federal benefit programs intended to provide essential services to those who need it, is an outrage."

Ereg's first court appearance is set for Thursday morning, Rosen said.

The first charges in the Feeding Our Future scheme came down in 2022, and the scheme involves accusations of stealing over $250 million intended for pandemic relief to feed children by opening hundreds of supposed meal sites for kids during the pandemic and then claiming to feed thousands each day.

Since then, 79 people have been charged, with most pleading guilty or being convicted at trial.

As part of the scheme, Feeding Our Future would "sponsor" food distribution site, overseeing paperwork and federal reimbursements to nearly 300 under the program, while receiving nearly $200 million in federal funds in 2021.

The convicted ringleader behind the massive fraud scheme, Aimee Bock, was sentenced in May to 41.5 years in prison for her role in coordinating the fraud. Bock was convicted by a jury on March 19, 2025, for her role in the scheme.

Bock was also ordered to pay $243 million in restitution back to the federal government.

Prosecutors say Bock's actions caused lasting harm to Minnesota, casting doubt on the legitimacy of several programs in its wake.

Exactly where storms form remains uncertain, but some storms could be severe.

These storms carry a level 3 enhanced risk of severe weather for eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, extending into eastern Iowa and northern Illinois. Central Minnesota remains under a level 2 slight risk, while western Minnesota is under a level 1 marginal risk.

The latest round of storms could develop between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday.
New Minneapolis assessment finds ICE surge cost city $700M

A new assessment by the City of Minneapolis has found the ICE surge cost the city nearly $700 million in economic due in part to businesses being forced to close, cut hours, and employees missing work.

ICE surge impact in Minneapolis

The assessment by the City of Minneapolis found the ICE surge caused the city $697 million in financial impact starting December 2025 through April 2026.

The report looked at how the surge impacted the city in seven areas: livelihood, shelter, food security, health, education, protection, and city operations.

Of those areas, "livelihood" – which included business losses and worker wage losses – accounted for most of the losses ($607 million).

Here is the full breakdown:

Livelihood: Business and wage losses ($607 million)

Shelter: Rental assistance increases ($63 million)

Food security: Substantial increases in help ($9 million)

Health: Lost revenue at clinics ($7 million)

Youth and education: Disruption to safety and education ($2 million)

City operations: $9.7 million

Protection: Unknown costs.

The assessment also shows the surge in strained city finances, costing $9.7 million in police overtime, operational expenses, and other city resources.

The assessment states it used "the most conservative estimates or figures" in most cases when making estimates. However, the authors admit they were hampered by data limitations, some of which was the result of "some people not reporting their needs due to fear."

Officials say that further studies will be needed in the years to come to arrive at a more precise figure of the economic damage.
