Fatal motorcycle crash in Sheboygan County, 1 dead

One person is dead following a motorcycle crash in Sheboygan County early Saturday morning, July 4.

Crash details

According to the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office, at about 4:20 a.m., the Sheboygan County Emergency Communications Center got a 911 call about a single motorcycle crash on Lakeshore Road at County Road MM, which is about midway between Sheboygan and the Village of Cleveland.

Preliminary investigation shows that the person riding the motorcycle was heading northbound on Lakeshore Road when he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the west side ditch.

The rider, a 40-year-old man from Sheboygan, was declared dead on scene after life-saving measures were attempted.

Names and other details will not be released at this time pending notification of families. This incident remains under investigation.

Milwaukee overnight fire; 3 homes uninhabitable, no injuries

A fire damaged three homes in Milwaukee early Saturday morning, July 4, and all homes are now uninhabitable.

Fire details

According to the Milwaukee Fire Department, just before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, emergency communications got a 911 call for a report of a house fire near 29th and Chambers.

When firefighters arrived, they found the fire on all three floors towards the front of the house, and the fire was spreading to the houses on each side.

Everyone got out of all three houses, and searches confirmed no one was left inside. However, an unconscious dog was found and treated with oxygen. The status of the dog is not known.

A damage estimate is not available, but MFD says all three homes are uninhabitable. The Red Cross was called to help those who were displaced. No firefighters or other people were injured.

The fire is under investigation.

Milwaukee shooting early Saturday, 1 wounded near 19th and Capitol

One person was injured in a shooting in Milwaukee in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 4.

Shooting details

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, at about 3:13 a.m., a 44-year-old was shot in the area of 19th and Capitol.

The shooting victim went to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.

Chourio's scratch hit in 11th breaks tie, Brewers top Diamondbacks 7-4

Jackson Chourio's slow roller scored the go-ahead run in the 11th inning and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 on Friday night, July 3.

Game recap

Ryan Thompson (3-2), the eighth Arizona pitcher of the game, entered to start the 11th with automatic runner Blake Perkins at second. Thompson hit Cooper Pratt, and Joey Ortiz sacrificed the runners to second and third. Christian Yelich was walked intentionally and Chourio hit a soft grounder to the third-base side. Thompson fielded it, but threw wildly, also allowing Pratt to score. Brice Turang followed with a two-run single to left.

Grant Anderson (2-3) pitched the final two innings for the Brewers, winners of four of their last five. Milwaukee, opening an 11-game trip that leads into the All-Star break, has a six-game lead in the National League Central.

Garrett Mitchell hit his eighth homer, a two-run shot, off José Cabrera in the second inning.

Mitchell nearly had another homer in the third, but Diamondbacks left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made a leaping catch at the wall.

In the sixth, Chourio made a similar catch in left to rob Gurriel. And then in the ninth, Gurriel made another catch on a ball Chourio hit to left center.

That seemed to change the Diamondbacks’ fortunes, as they tied the game in the bottom of the third and chased Brewers starter Kyle Harrison. Nolan Arenado’s two-run double made it 3-3 and ended Harrison’s night. The lefty threw 38 pitches in the third inning alone and was charged with three runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Cabrera didn’t fare much better, lasting just 3 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits and three runs.

The bullpens took over from there, allowing no runs until the automatic runners entered the picture.

Milwaukee RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-1, 2.59) opposes Arizona RHP Merrill Kelly (5-8. 5.84) on Saturday night.

Fatal Milwaukee crash Friday night; 1 dead, 1 in custody

One person is dead, and another person is in custody following a crash in Milwaukee on Friday night, July 3.

Crash details

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, at about 9 p.m. two vehicles collided near Appleton and Congress.

Police say the driver of vehicle #1, a 28-year-old, was heading southeast on Appleton Avenue. The driver of vehicle #2, a 27-year-old, was traveling in the opposite direction (northwest) on Appleton Avenue. The two vehicles crashed into each other at the intersection of Appleton and Congress.

The 27-year-old died at the scene. The 28-year-old was taken into custody.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, but have not said if any charges will be referred.

Ridglan Farms beagles: 47 activists charged in March 'open rescue'

The Dane County District Attorney's Office filed a list of new criminal charges against 47 people, accusing them of participating in the March "open rescue" of beagles at Ridglan Farms.

Activists storm Ridglan Farms

Animal rights activists stormed the Wisconsin dog breeding facility on March 15. The self-described "rescuers" got away with 23 beagles at that time. Attorney Wayne Hsiung, who was previously charged, led the team that forced its way into the breeding barns – ultimately punching their way through a window to get inside.

Hundreds of activists returned on April 18, but they failed to breach the fortified perimeter of Ridglan Farms. Law enforcement was ready to defend the facility with rubber bullets and tear gas.

Hsiung is among four people who were previously charged, bringing the total number of people charged to 51.

Ridglan Farms officially surrendered its state dog seller license, part of an agreement to avoid animal cruelty charges, on July 1. The charges against the activists came days later.

Research and release

For more than 60 years, Ridglan Farms bred beagle puppies in the town of Blue Mounds for use in scientific research. In 2024, former employees testified about the conditions at the farm as well as painful "cherry eye" surgeries performed routinely by non-veterinarians without pain relief.

In January 2025, a Dane County judge found probable cause that Ridglan Farms had committed crimes of animal cruelty. However, a special prosecutor appointed to investigate elected not to file charges. Instead, he agreed to a settlement that allows Ridglan Farms to avoid criminal charges if it surrenders its breeding license.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy – two large-scale nonprofits – confirmed a deal to buy 1,500 dogs from the Dane County breeding facility for an undisclosed sum of money in late April. The dogs started being released on May 1.

In June, Big Dog Ranch Rescue secured a legal agreement to remove more than 400 dogs that were still inside the facility. Some were removed then, while the rest will be released in August when Ridglan Farms completes an ongoing research project. No dogs will remain once the August transfer is completed.

The Ridglan Farms beagles headed all over Wisconsin – and the country – once they were released. A number of states have welcomed the dogs, including neighboring Minnesota and Illinois, and as far as Florida, Nevada and New York.

Lake Geneva boat capsized, 3 children dead after storm hits area

Three children died on Geneva Lake after a boat capsized during severe weather that caused "massive damage" across Walworth County on Friday afternoon.

Boat sinks in storm

The Geneva Lake Police Department said 10 people – six adults and four children – were on a boat trying to get to safety when severe wind and waves overwhelmed the boat, it took on water, capsized and sank.

The six adults and one of the children were rescued from the water, police said, while three of the kids were missing when emergency responders got there. Those three children were found and later died despite life-saving attempts. All four of the children were wearing life jackets when the boat capsized.

Walworth County storm damage

Walworth County Undersheriff Tom Hausner said a strong storm caused "massive damage" when it hit southern Walworth County at around 12:10 p.m. A wave of 911 calls came in for reports of downed trees and power lines, vehicles crushed and people trapped in collapsed structures.

The sheriff's office said an emergency call-in of all off-duty deputies took place, and mutual aid from surrounding counties and state agencies was requested, to respond to life-safety calls.

Downed trees and power lines blocked roads and delayed emergency response efforts across the county. Hausner said the town of Geneva and Lake Como areas "sustained massive damage" in particular.

The City of Lake Geneva declared a state of emergency. Donian Park and Oak Hill Cemetery are closed until further notice due to dangerous conditions, while Flat Iron Park and Library Park will be closed through the evening to clear debris.

America 250: Milwaukee brewing history celebrated in new exhibit

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, one Milwaukee tour provides an experience to immerse yourself in beer and American history at the same time.

Best Place inside the historic Pabst Brewery is providing one-hour tours that include a stop in a special new exhibit which showcases a collection of model ships constructed by artist Ernesto Valles.

America's 250th

If you're looking to quench your thirst for some history, there may be no better place than Best Place. In the former halls of one of America's largest beer makers, owner Jim Haertel is leading tours through a special exhibit.

On the tour, Haertel shares beer stories about when the idea of America just started brewing. Those include tales of how beer may have played a role in the Pilgrims ending up on Plymouth Rock.

"The captain said, ‘Sorry, we’re running out of beer. So you’re getting off here, or you’re coming back with us,’" said Haertel.

Other stories talk about how our Founding Father's didn't just love beer, they brewed it.

"Jefferson made beer, he learned from his wife how to brew beer. James Madison wanted to create a secretary of beer," explained Haertel.

For the next week or so, Haertel is tying the Pabst brewery history to America's. In many ways, the two are unexpected success stories. And for tales of inspiration, look no further than Milwaukee's beer barons.

Beer in Milwaukee

It seems the success of America and Milwaukee go hand in hand. In a land of opportunity, immigrants created companies that would soon become some of the most successful in the world.

"We were a big deal. As recently as the 1970s we had three of the four largest brewers in the country. Anheuser-Bush in St. Louis but we had Schlitz Miller and Pabst," said historian John Gurda.

Gurda pointed out innovations and a mastery of marketing have kept Milwaukee as the beer capitol of the world for a century.

"Beer goes back to the Egyptians or the Syrians. It goes way, way back there. But one thing that Milwaukee did give the world was light beer," said Gurda.

Best Place beer tour, exhibit

The special tour is expected to run through the Fourth of July weekend. It's a reminder as we get set to say cheers to 250 years of America, it may not have been possible without the success of Milwaukee.

"It’s a big part of it. It’s a big part of it," said Haertel.

The exhibit features many model ships constructed by Milwaukee muralist Ernesto Valles. Valles is speaking on several of the tours to explain his work and some of the other art that is on display as part of the special tour. For times and information head to the Best Place website.

Milwaukee lakefront drone show, Carroll students hands-on education

The drone show on Milwaukee’s lakefront Friday isn't just a spectacle – it's also an educational experience. Carroll University students are helping this year’s show take flight.

Organizers said this is one of the biggest drone shows ever in the country in terms of length. A total of 900 drones will light up in the sky for a 45-minute-long show.

Setup started at noon on Friday. Northern Lights Drone Show pulled up at McKinley Marina with three trailers full of drones. They all have to be taken out of their box, lined up facing north and tested before flying.

Helping them set up and test the machines were Carroll University students majoring in drone engineering. The department’s director said this offers students a hands-on experience they can’t replicate in the classroom. This major is new to Carroll, and it’s a response to the growing need for drone engineers and operators in agriculture, construction and defense.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers predicts 100,000 new drone jobs will open up in the U.S. within the next few years. As for Friday’s show, expect a patriotic theme and even some drones with pyrotechnics, and of course, some extra hands from Carroll Pioneers.

"The thing is with drones, the more you have, the cooler these shapes are. Statue of Liberty, American eagle – even just the U.S. flag. All amazing," said Jack Johnson, a senior.

"They learn how GPS works, as far as the positioning of these drones in space," said Michael Mortensen, Carroll drone engineering director.

The drones will launch in three waves, in 15-minute chunks over 45 minutes. Northern Lights, the company behind the show, promises a few surprises – including a scene with a U.F.O. dropping off the Bronze Fonz.

A Kwik Trip in Richland Center sold a $167,000 Badger 5 ticket for the Wednesday, July 1, drawing. The sale sets a new record as the highest-value lottery ticket ever sold at this location.

The winning numbers were 2-8-17-28-31. It is the ninth time this year that a winning Badger 5 jackpot was more than $100,000.

"We just reopened last Thursday. After one week of sales, we already have a big winner," said Lisa, the Kwik Trip store leader.

Through the Retailer Performance Program, Wisconsin Lottery retailers earn a 2% bonus—up to $100,000—on any winning ticket sold over $599.

Milwaukee school fire: Meetings for Lincoln Avenue families, staff

Following the fire at Lincoln Avenue School in Milwaukee, MPS is working with families and staff to figure out a plan for the upcoming school year.

As stated previously, MPS plans to keep the Lincoln Avenue School community together at one location.

School to be torn down

The City of Milwaukee is starting the process of tearing the school building down because of the amount of damage.

The city will select a contractor and coordinate closely with MPS throughout this process. It is important to stay away from the property and follow all safety signs and barriers.

Meetings for staff and families

To ensure everyone's voices are heard as a plan is finalized for the upcoming year, MPS is holding virtual meetings for staff and families next week. The virtual links were already shared with families and staff.

Sparkling Firework Art: Have kids fold paper and use paint or glitter to create symmetrical firework bursts when they press and open the paper.

Woman attacked on Fond du Lac County trail; man charged

A 21-year-old man has been criminally charged, accused of attacking a woman who was walking with her baby in a stroller on a Fond du Lac County trail.

Miles Jaeger of Rosendale is charged with attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery, and criminal damage to property.

Woman attacked on trail

According to the criminal complaint, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon, June 29, in the area of the Mascoutin Valley Trail in the Village of Rosendale near the intersection of Willow Creek Road.

A woman reported being attacked while walking on a trail with her one-year-old son in a stroller.

Per the complaint, the victim stated that after Jaeger walked past her, he turned around, grabbed her from behind by the neck, and tried to cover her mouth with a cloth.

The victim fought off Jaeger and ran to her nearby home with her son and called 911.

Miles Jaeger arrested

Using the victim's detailed description of the suspect and his vehicle, deputies and detectives canvassed the area. Investigators then identified 21-year-old Miles Jaeger as the suspect with the help of eyewitness reports and surveillance footage.

Around 10:46 p.m., deputies and detectives executed a search warrant at a home in the Village of Rosendale, where they arrested Jaeger.

Court proceedings

Jaeger made his intal appearance in court on Thursday, July 2. Cash bond was set at $200,000.

Jaeger is due back in court on July 10 for a preliminary hearing.

Small plane lands on Winnebago County road; had mechanical issues

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported plane crash in the Town of Clayton on Thursday, July 2. The incident occurred around 4:07 p.m. on Oakridge Road, just west of Green Meadow Road.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Zenair CH-750 Cruzer, a fixed-wing single-engine aircraft, experienced mechanical problems and made a hard landing on Oakridge Road. The plane ultimately came to a stop partially in a ditch.

Both occupants of the aircraft—a 71-year-old pilot from France and a 22-year-old passenger from Sweden—walked away from the crash unharmed.

The plane’s front end and landing gear were damaged in the incident.

The Town of Clayton FD/1st Responders and the Appleton International Airport Public Safety responded to the scene.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were made aware of the incident and will continue the investigation. The Wisconsin State Patrol also assisted with the initial response.

Preliminary data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services shows that 226 people visited state emergency rooms for firework-related injuries in 2025, with 58% of those visits happening during the first week of July.

Even simple sparklers can burn at nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to instantly ignite clothing and cause severe burns, according to ReadyWisconsin.

"As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors for this Semiquincentennial, people shouldn’t forget to keep safety in mind," said Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle. "A few moments of caution can make the difference between a successful celebration and a preventable tragedy."

The easiest and best way to stay safe is to watch community fireworks shows run by professionals.

Firework safety

If you choose to set off your own fireworks, ReadyWisconsin asks people to remember the following:

Obey local laws and permitting requirements for the use of fireworks.
Children should never handle fireworks and should be closely supervised when they are in use.
Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water or a hose nearby.
For ground-based fireworks, be at least 35 feet away.
Sometimes fireworks don’t go off, but duds always pose a risk. Never try to re-light or approach a failed firework. Let duds sit for five to ten minutes before you put them in a bucket of water.
Fireworks can be extremely stressful for pets. Keep them indoors. Close the curtains or blinds and turn on the TV or radio to provide a distraction.
Only light one firework at a time. Lighting multiple fireworks at the same time increases the risk of accidents occurring from the fuse burning faster than designed.
Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Consider safer alternatives to fireworks, such as party poppers, bubbles, silly string, or glow sticks.

Safety tips for family trips

The days around the Fourth of July are also popular for family trips and outdoor gatherings.

Never leave people or pets in a parked car – even briefly. Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can climb to life-threatening levels within minutes. On an 80-degree Fahrenheit day the temperature inside a parked car, even with windows cracked slightly open, can reach 100-degrees Fahrenheit in less than 10 minutes.
When cooking outdoors, remember to keep grills at least three feet away from your home or any structure that can catch fire. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and maintain a child-free and pet-free safe zone around the grill while it’s hot.

Make sure an adult is present to supervise pool activities and flotation devices are used when appropriate.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, a 9-year-old was shot around 11:19 p.m. near Burleigh and Richards.

The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting are under investigation. Police continue to seek unknown suspect(s).

Milwaukee lakefront drone show July 3; here's what to know

Milwaukee County's lakefront Drone Show returns to McKinley Beach on Friday night, July 3. Here's what to know about the second-annual display.

When is the drone show?

Festivities start at 3 p.m. – including activities like face painting and bounce houses – and the drones will launch at approximately 9:15 p.m. The show will last approximately 45 minutes.

Where is the drone show?

The drone show will take flight at McKinley Beach, off of Lincoln Memorial Drive north of Lafayette Hill Road, at Milwaukee's lakefront.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, because viewing areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Staking is not permitted. On the map below, Milwaukee County Parks said the green zone has the "best" views and audio, the yellow zone is "good" and the red "zone" is limited.

What is the drone show?

The drone show features pyrotechnic drones that create images and themes that celebrate patriotism and Milwaukee landmarks, synchronized to a music soundtrack.

Where can I park?

Parking at the McKinley Marina paved lot, and Coast Guard Station and McKinley Tennis Court grass lots, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The paved lot is $30 per vehicle, and the grass lots are $20 per vehicle – cash or card – starting at 2 p.m. Lincoln Memorial Drive will partially close at around 8 p.m. and reopen following the show.

Will there be food?

Food and beverage vendors – including Flips Donuts, Special Events Foods, Bartolotta, Roundhouse Beer Garden and more – will be on site. Outside picnic foods are allowed, but outside alcohol is prohibited.

What happens if it rains?

If it rains on Friday, Milwaukee County Parks said the drone show will instead take place on Sunday, July 5.

Milwaukee child killed: Mother gets probation for helping felon

A Milwaukee mother was sentenced to probation for harboring/aiding a felon after her 4-year-old son was shot and killed.

Parents sentenced

Casandra Taylor received five years of probation on June 22. Her son, 4-year-old Ralph Taylor III, was shot at an apartment near 75th and Northridge Lakes in Milwaukee on July 10, 2025.

The child's father, Ralph Taylor, was sentenced in April to life in prison without the possibility of extended supervision. He was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide and illegal firearm possession.

Case details

According to a criminal complaint, Milwaukee police were called to an apartment near 75th and Northridge Lakes in Milwaukee on the night of July 10, 2025. When officers arrived, they were met by several people yelling for help, indicating that a child was shot. On the third floor, they found the 4-year-old just inside the doorway of a bedroom. Despite life-saving efforts by police and the Milwaukee Fire Department, Ralph Taylor III was pronounced dead at the scene.

When police initially spoke with Ralph Taylor, he said he was on the phone when he heard a gunshot. Taylor "claimed the gunshot must have come from outside and entered the bedroom through an open third story window. He told an officer there were no weapons or firearms inside the residence, the complaint said, and the subsequent investigation "would establish that Ralph Taylor lied about all of the surrounding circumstances surrounding how his own four-year-old son...was shot."

In an interview not long after the initial one, the complaint said Ralph Taylor told another officer "that he was texting with his wife while (the 4-year-old) was jumping on a mattress. Ralph Taylor heard a gunshot and observed (the child) fall to the floor. Again, Ralph Taylor claimed that the gunshot must have come through an open third-story window to the residence and struck (the child)."

A detective later interviewed a witness. She told police she "checked her Ring camera and observed Casandra Taylor, the mother of (the 4-year-old), outside screaming, 'my son, my son, somebody shot my son through the window!'" the complaint said. When the witness went outside and approached Casandra Taylor, Taylor asked the witness to go upstairs and check on her son. She and another neighbor went into the residence and spotted Ralph Taylor holding the child and screaming. As the second neighbor was administering CPR to the child, the complaint said Ralph Taylor said, "'I got to hide my guns.'"

When the first witness left the residence, the complaint said Casandra Taylor approached her and asked her to hold Taylor's purse for her. The witness was "concerned that the purse had a gun inside and refused to hold the purse," the complaint said. The witness said another neighbor took the purse – and when that neighbor "checked the purse, there was a gun inside," the complaint said.

Evidence found at scene

A Milwaukee police detective was placed in charge of the scene investigation. The detective reported that a Glock semi-automatic handgun was "recovered wrapped inside of two plastic bags in a large Rubbermaid storage container inside a closet located on the third floor" of the residence.

The complaint said the "gun had suspected blood on the grip and slide. Inside the same Rubbermaid container there was a Crown Royal bag that contained 96 rounds of 9mm ammunition." Located on the floor of the bedroom where the child was shot, investigators found a single 9mm round, "which would be consistent with a person ejecting the round from a gun to clear the chamber," the complaint said.

Interview of Ralph Taylor

On July 11, Milwaukee police detectives conducted an interview with Ralph Taylor. The complaint said he initially provided the same response he gave to police on the scene – that the child had been struck by someone who fired a shot through an open window. About an hour and 13 minutes into the interview, Taylor provided a new version of events, claiming his gun was under a pillow and he never saw the child go underneath the pillows, "but he was behind me and my back was to him. I heard the shot," the complaint said.

Before confronting Ralph Taylor with the inconsistencies in this latest version of events, a detective asked what an argument with Casandra Taylor was about. Taylor "admitted that he and Casandra Taylor were arguing over his lack of taking care of (the child)," the complaint said. After the shooting, Taylor "claimed that he put the Glock back underneath the pillows because 'I am a felon,'" the complaint said.

Packers' Matthew Golden hosts Wisconsin youth football camps

At the University School of Milwaukee, over 150 campers packed the football field to learn from a Green Bay Packers star. Wide receiver Matthew Golden was in town to host his youth football camp.

Milwaukee was his third stop in a whirlwind weekend that featured camps in Eau Claire, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Madison.

"It means a lot," said Golden. "Just fortunate enough to be in a position that I’m in, just give back to the kids and the community, that’s just kind of how I was brought up, and it means a lot. Just to come out here and watch the kids come out here and compete, just play football."

For Golden, hosting this youth camp was a no-brainer. He's currently spending his offseason in Houston, but he wanted to make sure he got back to Wisconsin before Packers training camp began to give back to the next generation of football players.

"I mean it's just a blessing," said Golden. "You just don't know how much of an impact you got on other people's lives. I know just coming out here and taking the time out of my day just to be out here and be around the kids, I know that means a lot to them."

Golden took pictures with the kids, participated in drills, but most importantly, wanted to make sure he taught them this.

"Small fundamentals," he said. "You know, just come out here and have fun. Honestly, as a kid, you want to compete, so I know that’s what they're going to come out here and do. Just try to give them as much game as I can and, at the same time, just come out here and have fun."

Bigger role with Packers

This upcoming season will be an important one for the second-year receiver. Not only will Golden be asked to take on a bigger role on the field, but he's also taking it upon himself to be an even bigger leader.

"It just goes back to just knowing the impact that you have on other people," said Golden. "I think that's what it's all about. You know, just try to set the next foundation for the youth and just kind of make it standard for them and just give them something to chase."

Golden's star is on the rise. Former Packers receivers Randall Cobb and James Jones have both been very complimentary of Golden. Jones even said Golden would become a superstar.

"It means a lot, but, just for me, just taking it one day at a time knowing what I can do," said Golden. "I got a lot of confidence in myself, so whatever happens, I know it's going to be good. I'm just looking forward to going into the season with my guys."

Like these campers, Golden is excited to keep growing – and the impact he's making can't be understated.

The next time Golden takes the field, the Packers will be kicking off training camp on Wednesday, July 29.

Death threats to Evers' office, Wisconsin man charged

A Fond du Lac man is accused of calling Gov. Tony Evers' office and threatening to kill a "high ranking Wisconsin Executive Official" in late June, according to prosecutors.

Charges filed

The Fond du Lac County District Attorney's Office charged 46-year-old Bradley Hartmann with three felony counts of terrorist threats and four misdemeanor counts of telephone harassment. Court records show he posted $15,000 cash bond on Thursday.

Threatening voicemails

The Wisconsin State Capitol Police Department and Fond du Lac Police Department investigated the threats, which were made in a series of voicemails on June 28. The threats started at around 1:40 a.m.

A criminal complaint said Hartmann threatened to kill the victim and the victim's family. He left voicemails that used several expletives and racist and homophobic slurs. He also said, "Call the cops on me I dare you."

Was Gov. Tony Evers the target?

While the criminal complaint did not explicitly identify who the government official was, it did state the threats were made to the number that is publicly available for Gov. Tony Evers' office.

Court records also show Hartmann has been ordered not to contact Gov. Tony Evers, not to go to any event Evers is attending, and not to go to Capitol Square in Madison.

FOX6 News reached out to the governor's office to confirm if Evers was the recipient of Hartmann's threats. We did not hear back.

Threat investigations

A Wisconsin State Capitol police officer contacted Fond du Lac police, who went to Hartmann's apartment. The complaint said Hartmann did not answer the door at first, but later came out. He "hung his head" and said he "didn't intend for anything" when asked about the voicemails.

Hartmann said he didn't remember making the calls and "must have blacked out," according to the complaint. He said he had no intention of harming the victim and made a comment about "maybe he should stop drinking." He added that he may have gotten upset about something he saw "on TikTok or online."

Investigators checked Hartmann's phone, which showed calls to the government office and Dane County dispatch, as well as a return call from investigators.

Hartmann was known to law enforcement, the complaint said, because he threatened to "start killing people" when he called the Department of Workforce Development about his unemployment in 2020. Court records do not show any criminal charges filed against Hartmann with regard to those threats.

Milwaukee electric scooter fine increase, committee OKs proposal

Milwaukee leaders debated higher fines for electric scooter riders illegally riding on the sidewalks Thursday. The new fight erupts after a man was seriously injured.

Higher fines for sidewalk scooter riders?

The Common Council’s Public Safety Committee advanced a proposal to charge higher fines. The debate now heads to the full council.

You cannot ride an electric scooter on a Milwaukee sidewalk. And if you do, you already risk a fine of up to $20. The council's Public Safety Committee today debated how high the fines should go up. The committee advanced Ald. Robert Bauman's proposal, which would raise the fines up to $200.

While Ald. Peter Burgelis is proposing fining illegal riders up to $1,000 and fining Lime, the scooter company, $100 dollars up to $10,000. The council is waiting to weigh that proposal, to give the city attorney time to review it.

Scooter accidents

This debate erupted after a dangerous sidewalk crash. Prosecutors charged Jonpierre Cherry. They allege he was also riding a scooter on a sidewalk and injured the victim, who had broken ribs, a broken ankle and a fractured spine.

A different victim, 81-year-old Mary Bryant, said a scooter rider on the sidewalk also collided with her. She broke her femur and was in the hospital for six days.

"If they’re caught riding on the sidewalk, give them a heavy fine. They were talking about it on the news this morning, and they say, like, $100 or 200. To me, that's not enough. At least $500 if you are caught riding that scooter that could kill somebody on the sidewalk, give them a heavy fine, and if they’re caught again, I’d fine them $1,000 if I had anything to do with it," Bryant told FOX6 News.

City safety measures, Lime responds

The Department of Public Works estimates 70% to 80% of riders ride where they're supposed to. DPW said it’s working to build more bike lanes, which scooters can use. They say they have 20 miles right now of protected bike lanes, and are considering another 30 miles.

The Public Safety Committee also discussed cutting scooter speed limits from 15 mph to 5 mph. The Department of Public Works said they already have slow zones, where the scooters slow down to only 5 mph. That includes Martin Luther King Drive, the Deer District, and the area around the Milwaukee Public Market.

Lime responded to Thursday's hearing, writing in a statement to FOX6:

"We at Lime are grateful to the Department of Public Works and the Council for the thoughtful conversation that affirmed the value of this program to Milwaukee’s transportation network and laid out a path forward for us all to work together to improve safety for all road users."

The company added:

"Sidewalk riding is prohibited in Milwaukee. Lime communicates that to riders through multiple channels, including in-app reminders, our in-app safety quiz- which requires users to affirm they will not ride on sidewalks- as well as stickers on every scooter stating that sidewalk riding is not allowed.

"Safety is foundational to our service in Milwaukee, and we encourage riders to follow the rules of the road, use bike lanes where available, and help keep the city's streets safe, accessible and welcoming for riders and nonriders alike. We are looking to work with the city on finding solutions that make the program safe and accessible for riders and pedestrians alike."

"Wisconsin has answered the call in every chapter of our nation’s history," War Memorial Center President and CEO Brian Winski said.

The War Memorial has stood prominently for nearly 70 years as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifices made for freedom.

"This isn’t an homage to war. It’s quite the opposite," Winski said. "It’s a memorial to those who fought and died doing that."

What you'll find inside

Inside, visitors will find displays of names and stories of the more than 60 service members awarded the highest military honor in our nation. From General Arthur MacArthur to his son Douglas. A five-star general who led US troops on the Pacific front during World War II.

There is a special display for Air Force Captain Lance Sijan who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously in 1976. His plane was shot down over Laos. Despite a broken leg and head injury, Sijan avoided captured for six weeks.

"He escapes from his first captivity," Winski explained. "Captured again, ultimately in the Hanoi, in North Vietnam, he perishes."

Medal of Honor recipient

Gary Wetzel received his medal in 1968. After his helicopter was shot down, his left arm was nearly severed, but he continued to man his machine gun and help other injured soldiers.

"Medically, I should've been dead, but here I am, so every time I put it on, I'm honored," Wetzel said when he spoke to FOX6 in 2022. "When I wear this blue ribbon, I wear it for everybody."

It’s that selflessness displayed by so many that has allowed the nation to flourish for 250 years. The War Memorial serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that will never be forgotten.
