They returned roughly 40 minutes later after the 8-year-old girl called and said she was bleeding.

When asked who shot her, the complaint said the victim pointed at the 4-year-old boy. The victim said she knew a gun was kept under a mattress in the bedroom, the boy grabbed it, it went off, and the boy put it back under the bed.

Shooting at 75th Street apartment complex, near 76th and Brown Deer

Investigators determined the boy had been dropped off at the apartment to be babysat minutes before Piggee and Westmoreland left, according to court filings.

Prosecutors said the apartment was "filthy and littered with food, dirty clothes, cigarettes' ashes and plastic bottles." The bedroom was "littered further with liquor bottles, ashes, ashtrays (sic) and diapers." Police did not find any firearm safety items, such as a gun lock or safe, anywhere in the apartment.

In the bedroom, the complaint said police located the "severely disabled" 2-year-old child in a crib. Between the crib and a mattress, officers found a single bullet casing. On the floor, police found a bloody t-shirt with an apparent bullet hole in it – as well as a bloody blanket.

Women in custody
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
Piggee told police she was out for groceries when the shooting happened and claimed to not know where the kids would have gotten a gun, per the complaint. However, she later told investigators she knew there was a gun in the apartment, which belonged to Westmoreland, but "forgot it was there."

Westmoreland spoke to police at the scene. Prosecutors said she told investigators a 16-year-old boy removed the gun from the apartment after the shooting "so no one would get in trouble."

The complaint said a resident of another apartment told police she was getting ready to leave that day when her friend heard a gunshot. She said they went to see what happened, and Westmoreland handed her a gun that was wrapped in a pair of sweatpants. The gun was then put into the 16-year-old's backpack, where police found it still wrapped in the sweatpants.
<fts-yahoo-source format="html" text="
Information in this story is from the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office and Wisconsin Circuit Court.
" title="The Source"></fts-yahoo-source>

He will not be eligible for extended release. Jones was convicted of shooting and killing Officer Kendall Corder and wounding Officer Christopher McCray.

Jones' statement to the court prior to sentencing
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
Defense attorney Russell Jones read a statement written by Tremaine Jones to the court. It read as follows:

"Dear judge, I want to start this letter off by saying I sincerely apologize to you, the courts, the Da, the victims and the victim's family. On June 26th, 2025, the life of Kendall Corder was taken and Christopher McCray was also seriously injured in the process. There is not a day that goes by without me thinking, without my me thinking. I just wish I could go back in time and change what happened. Although that is not possible. The reality of it is that I pray each and every day that you, the families and God could someday forgive me for my selfish actions that day. I am not a monster or a violent person. I was highly intoxicated this day and unfortunately, I let fear and anger cloud my judgment. I will not use my drug abuse as an excuse for my poor behavior and decisions. I am here today to take accountability, apologize and pray for forgiveness someday for the grief and suffering that my actions have caused."

Judge's statement, sentence

Milwaukee Police Department statement
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman issued the following statement following the sentencing:

"While this outcome brings a measure of relief, it does not lessen our profound grief over the tragic loss of our beloved colleague. MPD will forever honor Officer Corder and his dedicated service to this community.

"The sentence imposed is indeed important for justice, but it can never bring back what has been taken from the men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department. I wish to express my deepest gratitude to our members who have endured this tremendous loss yet have remained steadfast and diligent in the work they do every single day for the residents of Milwaukee."

Police union statement
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
The Milwaukee Police Association released the following statement ahead of Jones' sentencing:

"Today’s sentencing closes one painful chapter in a tragedy that forever changed the lives of the families of Officer Kendall Corder and Officer Christopher McRay, as well as the entire Milwaukee Police Department.

"Nothing will ever bring Kendall back. He was a son, a partner, a friend, and a police officer who answered the call to protect this community. His loss is still felt deeply by the men and women who served beside him every day.

"We also continue to stand with Officer Christopher McRay, who survived that horrific night and continues to recover physically and emotionally from the trauma he endured. The impact of violence against police officers does not end when the headlines fade or when a sentence is handed down. These wounds last for years.

"This case is a stark reminder of the dangers Milwaukee police officers face every single day. Officers put on the uniform knowing they may be called into violent and unpredictable situations at any moment, yet they continue to show up and serve this community with courage and professionalism.

"Our officers need more than support after a tragedy. They need to know this community stands with them every day when they answer dangerous calls, when they work long hours away from their families, and when they make sacrifices most people will never fully see or understand.

"We ask the community to continue wrapping its arms around the families of Kendall Corder and Christopher McRay, along with all Milwaukee police officers. Support for law enforcement cannot exist only in moments of mourning. It must exist in the everyday recognition that these officers are risking their lives to protect others.

"We Shall Never Forget."

The shooting
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="The backstory"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
Milwaukee Police Officers Kendall Corder and Christopher McCray were shot near 25th and Garfield on the night of June 26, 2025.
