Philadelphia parking garage to be demolished after deadly collapse

A parking garage in Philadelphia's Grays Ferry neighborhood is expected to be demolished Friday after a partial collapse killed one worker and left two others missing and presumed dead.

The collapse happened at about 2:17 p.m. Wednesday near 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and immediately rescued one worker, who later died at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Two other workers were considered missing after the collapse, and later presumed dead after search and rescue efforts turned up no signs of life at the collapse scene.

The workers have not yet been identified.

"We want you to know that we indeed grieve their loss tonight, and we will continue to stand by shoulder-to-shoulder to support those families that have been directly impacted," said Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker in a Thursday night press conference.

All three victims were members of Ironworkers Local 401 and the Philadelphia building and construction trades.

Search and rescue operators had been working around the clock at the garage, as technical specialists worked to stabilize the remainder of the garage and four highly trained search dogs scoured the scene.

Parked announced Thursday night that their rescue efforts had transitioned to a recovery effort.

The garage was under construction and owned by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

A controlled demolition of the structure at 3000 Grays Ferry Ave is expected to begin Friday afternoon, according to the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management. Officials warned residents to expect increased activity and noise in the area and advised nearby businesses and residents to avoid the scene and keep windows closed during the process.

The collapse centered around one of the garage's staircases and the remainder of the structure is expected to be demolished Friday as recovery efforts continue.

The collapse has impacted the local community, with streets closed from 29th Street to 33rd Street along Grays Ferry Avenue and the nearby shopping plaza remaining closed.

Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel and First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford emphasized that safety is the top priority and urged residents to avoid the area.

The investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing, with local, state and federal agencies involved.

"We will continue to investigate this garage collapse, and we will do it thoroughly and efficiently to learn all the relevant facts of this terrible tragedy," said Parker. Solicitor Rene Garcia added, "There are many agencies, local, state and federal, that are conducting investigations because now is the best time to preserve all evidence."

The city is working with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and other partners to keep the public informed. Residents in need of trauma support are encouraged to call 988 for assistance.

Officials said they will hold a community meeting and provide explanations as soon as more information is available.

4 suspects sought in Philadelphia triple shooting that left innocent bystander dead

Philadelphia police have identified two suspects in connection with a triple shooting that left an innocent bystander dead.

Investigators say they are still working to identify two other suspects and are seeking the public’s assistance in their investigation.

Police responded to the 5900 block of Market Street around 6:30 p.m. back on April 7 for reports of a shooting with multiple victims.

Responding officers found 20-year-old Imani Ringgold and two others suffering from gunshot wounds and transported them to nearby hospitals.

Ringgold later succumbed to her injuries.

Investigators later revealed that Ringgold was not the target of the shooting, but was an innocent bystander who had just bought lunch and was heading back to her place of work.

Police announced Monday that they were searching for as many as four suspects in connection with the shooting.

Investigators have identified Mustafa King, 26, and Zaire Manning, 21, as suspects in the shooting. Both are wanted on multiple charges, including murder.

Two additional suspects believed to be connected to the incident have not yet been identified police.

Anyone with information about the identities or whereabouts of the suspects is asked to contact police. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time.

When is the deadline to register for the Delaware primary?

Voters in Delaware who want to take part in the state’s 2026 primary must register by Saturday, August 22.

The 2026 midterm elections will decide control of the next U.S. Congress and key state leadership, including Delaware’s statewide offices.

Before the general election, each state will hold primaries to determine which candidates appear on the November ballot.

In Delaware, the September primary will narrow the field of candidates who will compete in the November general election for several important posts, per Ballotpedia.

U.S. Senate — One U.S. Senate seat is up for election in Delaware in 2026: the seat currently held by Senator Chris Coons.

U.S. House of Representatives (Delaware at-large district) — One U.S. House seat is up for election in Delaware in 2026: the state’s at-large seat.

Statewide executive offices — Voters will choose party nominees for statewide offices, including attorney general, state auditor and state treasurer.

Delaware State Senate — Roughly half of the 21 State Senate districts will hold elections in 2026, with primaries determining party nominees in contested races.

Delaware House of Representatives — All 41 State House districts are on the ballot in 2026.

The 2026 midterms are expected to be highly competitive and potentially pivotal in determining which party controls the two chambers of Congress. As of April 2026, the Republican Party controls both chambers of Congress.

On Nov. 3, voters will cast ballots for all 435 U.S. House seats, 35 U.S. Senate seats and numerous state and local positions, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Voters will decide 33 regularly scheduled Senate seats, plus two special elections to fill the seats vacated by J.D. Vance of Ohio and Marco Rubio of Florida, who left Congress to serve as vice president and secretary of state, respectively.

Voter registration and deadlines

Voters in Delaware who want to take part in the state’s 2026 primary must register by Saturday, August 22, according to the Delaware Department of Elections.

The primary election will be held on Tuesday, September 15, and the deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Friday, September 11.

Voters are encouraged to check their registration status and ballot information well before these dates to ensure participation in both the primary and the November general election.

Court order limits federal actions at President’s House site: What we know

A federal appeals court has granted a partial pause on a lower court’s order regarding the President’s House slavery memorial, allowing the National Park Service to delay restoration and maintenance requirements but blocking any changes to the site without the city’s agreement, according to a court order issued Thursday, April 9.

Court order limits federal actions at President’s House site

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals granted a partial stay of the district court’s preliminary injunction, allowing the National Park Service and other federal officials to delay restoring the President’s House site to its January 21, 2026, condition and to delay certain maintenance requirements.

The court denied the federal government’s request to pause the part of the injunction that bars them from damaging or altering exhibits, panels, or artwork at the site.

The order also blocks the installation of replacement materials or further changes without the mutual agreement of the City of Philadelphia.

The appeals court instructed federal officials to continue preserving the status quo at the President’s House site while the case moves forward.

ATAC denounces proposed changes and calls for restoration

The Avenging the Ancestors Coalition (ATAC) criticized the National Park Service’s proposed replacement panels at the President’s House Slavery Memorial, calling them "deeply offensive" and "an attempt to sanitize history."

ATAC said, "No one person—no president, no administration—has the right to dictate what history we tell. The truth is not optional. We will not stand by quietly while anyone attempts to erase, distort, or whitewash the reality of slavery and its legacy in this country," said ATAC founder Michael Coard.

ATAC emphasized its two-decade effort to establish the memorial and said the Park Service did not consult them before proposing changes. The group vowed to keep pushing for the full restoration of the original exhibits.

The President’s House site in Philadelphia is one of the few federal memorials acknowledging the lives of nine enslaved African descendants held by George Washington.

The current legal fight centers on how the site’s history is presented and who has authority over its interpretation.

It is not yet clear how long the legal process will take or when a final decision will be made about the future of the President’s House exhibits.

Details about the specific changes proposed by the National Park Service have not been released.

Philly parking garage collapse: 1 confirmed dead, 2 presumed dead as search shifts to recovery

Two workers remain missing and are presumed dead, while another was pronounced dead after a partial collapse at a parking garage under construction in the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia, according to city officials.

Emergency response and search efforts continue in South Philadelphia

City officials said the collapse happened at about 2:17 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, and first responders arrived immediately.

One person was rescued and taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where they were pronounced deceased.

Two others remain missing and are presumed deceased, according to Mayor Parker.

"We want you to know that we indeed grieve their loss tonight, and we will continue to stand by shoulder to shoulder to support those families that have been directly impacted," said Parker.

She added that all three individuals are members of Ironworkers Local 401 and the Philadelphia building and construction trades.

Officials said search and rescue operations have been ongoing around the clock, with multiple agencies and technical specialists involved.

Four highly trained search dogs were used to look for signs of life, but none were found, leading the city to shift from rescue to recovery operations.

City agencies are canvassing nearby neighborhoods to notify residents about the demolition operation scheduled to begin Friday morning. The area remains cordoned off, and the public is urged to stay away for safety reasons.

Officials said that at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, a unified command met to set new objectives, including safely searching for life and planning to bring down the unstable structure.

By Thursday, search dogs and technology confirmed no signs of life, and preparations began for controlled demolition.

Managing Director Adam Thiel said, "From now through first light, the site will be secured and continually monitored...that building is being monitored continuously. That will continue through the night and until this incident is brought to a safe close."

Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson described the initial rescue efforts, saying, "Members of Squad 47, which are a block away, responded immediately when they heard the sound of that structure collapsing... They were able to pull to safety one person that was in the garage."

He explained that the structure was too unstable for further rescue attempts, and engineers determined a controlled demolition using a wrecking ball approach was the safest strategy.

Public safety and ongoing investigation

The collapse has impacted the local community, with streets closed from 29th Street to 33rd Street along Grays Ferry Avenue and the nearby shopping plaza remaining closed.

Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel and First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford emphasized that safety is the top priority and urged residents to avoid the area.

The investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing, with local, state and federal agencies involved.

"We will continue to investigate this garage collapse, and we will do it thoroughly and efficiently to learn all of the relevant facts of this terrible tragedy," said Parker. Solicitor Rene Garcia added, "There are many agencies, local, state and federal that are conducting investigations because now is the best time to preserve all evidence."

The city is working with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and other partners to keep the public informed. Residents in need of trauma support are encouraged to call 988 for assistance.

Mayor Parker said, "We are working with all of our intergovernmental stakeholders, and we are grateful for their support." She also thanked the Philadelphia Fire Department, Pennsylvania Task Force One, OSHA, and other agencies for their collaboration.

The collapse triggered an immediate response from emergency crews and a large-scale search effort. High-tech tools and specialized teams have been working around the clock since Tuesday afternoon.

The parking garage was owned by CHOP and was under construction at the time of the collapse.

The city said the remainder of the unstable building will be demolished as recovery efforts continue and crews work to recover the bodies of the missing workers.

The CEO of PreCast Services told FOX 29 they are in contact with the families of the workers.

Officials said they will hold a community meeting and provide explanations as soon as more information is available.

Officials have not released the names of the workers who died or the exact cause of the collapse. The investigation by OSHA is ongoing, and further details about what led to the structural failure have not been made public.

Deadly Philly parking garage collapse leaves Grays Ferry shopping center, businesses closed

Grays Ferry Shopping Center and surrounding businesses stayed closed Thursday after a partial parking garage collapse the previous day, according to city leaders. Officials said demolition is set to begin Friday, and they have been canvassing the area to notify residents.

Community impact as businesses and stores stay closed

Police blocked access to stores and roads around the Grays Ferry Shopping Center, and signs were posted in windows warning of closures.

Officials said the shopping center will likely remain closed for a few more days.

Brian Scott, who works at Chef's Table Catering Company near the collapse site, said, "Business-wise, we had to basically shut down our operation today."

Scott said he took his dogs out for a walk after his workday was cut short. "It was a busy day, there was a lot of stuff, food going out, so we were unable to continue," said Scott.

Darleatha Rodriguez, a Grays Ferry resident, said she depends on the Fresh Grocer at the shopping center. "Our only grocery outlet around here so it is a little hard because we only have corner stores and the corner stores don't carry everything, necessities," said Rodriguez.

Access to the shopping center is blocked, and residents are being redirected by police at Titan and 30th Street. "Everything in the strip mall is closed until further notice," said Rodriguez.

Adjustments for residents relying on groceries and transportation

The closure of the shopping center has left some residents needing to travel farther for groceries and essentials.

Rodriguez said she will likely have to drive 10 to 15 minutes to another grocery store.

"We usually try not to drive so much because the parking around here is crazy, so we try to walk as much as we can," said Rodriguez.

Her 9-year-old niece, Kalina, said, "We might have to take the bus to go somewhere to get the stuff that we need to make pasta."

Signs are posted warning of bus detours, and those who rely on public transportation will need to adjust their routines.

Rodriguez said, "Everyone that lost their lives in their everything, so that's why we're not making a big deal. It's just a little hiccup for right now."

Officials said they are working with management and the shopping center will remain closed for at least a few more days.

It is not yet clear when the shopping center and surrounding businesses will fully reopen or how long demolition and repairs will take.

Scam texts claim unpaid violations, Delaware DMV urges caution

The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles is alerting residents about a new scam involving fraudulent text messages that claim to be from the DMV and demand payment for supposed traffic violations, according to a press release from the agency.

Delaware DMV issues warning about scam texts

The DMV says scammers are sending text messages that tell people they have an outstanding traffic violation and must pay immediately by clicking a link.

The messages threaten suspension of vehicle registration, loss of driving privileges, legal action, and referral to a debt collector if payment is not made.

Officials say these texts are designed to steal money and personal information.

The DMV and E-ZPass Delaware will not contact customers by text to demand payment for violations or account replenishment.

"We are seeing an increase in fraudulent text messages designed to create a sense of urgency and pressure individuals into taking immediate action," said DMV Director Amy Anthony. "The most effective way to protect yourself is to pause, avoid clicking on links, and refrain from sharing any personal information unless you are absolutely certain the message is legitimate. If something seems suspicious, trust your instincts. It’s always better to verify than become a victim of a scam," continued Anthony.

The DMV urges anyone who receives a suspicious text or email to report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov, including the sender’s phone number and any website listed in the message.

If you accidentally click a suspicious link or share personal information, officials recommend securing your accounts and disputing any unfamiliar charges with your bank or credit card company.

Residents can check their DMV or E-ZPass accounts directly through official websites or by contacting customer service.

How to protect yourself from phishing scams

Falling for these scams can lead to financial loss and identity theft.

Scammers use urgent language to trick people into acting quickly without thinking.

Do not click on links in unexpected texts about traffic violations or payments. Always verify messages by contacting the DMV or E-ZPass Delaware directly using official contact information.

For DMV account questions, visit myDMV.delaware.gov, call 302-744-2500, or email DMVCustomerService@delaware.gov. For E-ZPass questions, go to ezpassde.com, visit the Customer Service Center in Downtown Dover, or call 1-888-397-2773.

It is not clear how many Delaware residents have received these scam texts or if anyone has lost money as a result.

A 19-year-old man from Wilmington is facing 25 felony charges for possessing child sexual abuse material, according to the New Castle County Division of Police.

Detectives say they began investigating Logan Albright in February after receiving information that he had child sexual abuse material on his cell phone.

Police say they obtained a search warrant and found 25 images and videos, some dating back to 2023, on Albright’s phone.

Detectives determined Albright used online communication apps to access servers containing child sexual abuse material.

Albright was already in custody at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution when he was arraigned on Tuesday, March 31, police said.

Albright remains in custody after failing to post $500,000 cash bail.

Police have not said how they first received the tip about Albright or if others may be involved.

THC edibles incident leaves Bucks County middle school students sick, district says

Several Pennsbury middle school students reportedly became sick Thursday after allegedly eating edibles containing THC, the chemical found in marijuana, according to a letter sent to families by Pennsbury School District leaders.

A small number of students at a Pennsbury middle school allegedly ingested THC-laced edibles and became ill Thursday, April 9, according to Superintendent Thomas A. Smith and other district officials.

Emergency medical personnel were called right away.

"Like many schools, we are seeing an increase in the use of vapes, vapes with THC, and edibles in our high school and middle schools. Our student code of conduct clearly states that drugs are not permitted on school campuses and students will be disciplined accordingly," said Smith.

The district says these topics are addressed with students in the curriculum and with families through the Pennsbury Parent and Family Academy, which holds presentations each fall on substance use and online harassment.

Parents react to students hospitalized after taking edibles

Parents in the community expressed concern and fear after learning about the situation.

"I feel like I'm going to cry. It's frightening really..wonder how they got them. It's very scary. They're much too young, so I hope they're okay. That's my first concern," said Kristin Tyler, a parent.

Dan Weissgerber, who has three children in the Pennsbury School District, said, "It's an unfortunate reality of modern life. kids are exposed to this stuff and all thse THC gummies and stuff. They"re easy to conceal and kids don't know the potency of them."

"It's something I always tell my kids, don't mess around with this stuff. I'm glad the school district did everything they could to make sure they were safe. Despite their best efforts, things like this make their way into the schools," said Weissgerber.

"When I first heard it, I was pretty shocked. That's not great getting stretchered out. Because who knows where they are getting it, what else is in there, you know, it's a danger," said David Kelley.

Rana Sing, who lives in the neighborhood, said, "My first reaction is where did they get that right? I'm surprised, it's so easily available. Middle school. 13-years old, that's sad."

Lower Makefield Township Police are investigating how the students obtained the edibles.

District leaders are urging families to attend future academy sessions to learn more about the challenges facing students.

"We recognize that these topics can sometimes be difficult to discuss, but we are committed to addressing the issues facing our students and our schools," said Smith.

The district is also sharing evidence-based resources to help parents and caregivers talk to their children about substance use. Officials say they are working to improve every aspect of the educational experience in Pennsbury and appreciate ongoing family support.

District officials stress the importance of open communication between families and schools to address substance use and related challenges.

Officials did not specify how many students were involved, their current conditions, or whether any disciplinary actions have been taken.

Philly area law enforcement cracking down on aggressive drivers with new initiative

Law enforcement agencies in the Philadelphia region are cracking down on aggressive drivers, thanks to a new initiative called Goal Zero.

The Goal Zero initiative is meant to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries by targeting those misbehaving on the roadways.

The initiative started back in March, and is expanding later this month on both sides of the state line.

SUGGESTED: PennDOT, state police warn of text phishing scams targeting Pennsylvania drivers

"During this initiative, additional troopers have been deployed on New Jersey roadways conducting focused enforcement," said Capt. Patrick Brady of the New Jersey State Police. "They’re using laser and radar devices to identify speeding drivers, they are watching for distracted driving and other hazardous violations."

Pennsylvania State Police officials say they're not only focusing on speeding drivers, but also tailgating, running red lights and stop signs, distracted driving and more.

Officials say the summer months are when more people are on the roadways, so they feel this initiative comes at the perfect time.

But, enforcement alone won't be enough, officials said.

"Real change happens when each of us takes responsibility behind the wheel, choosing patience over frustration, caution over carelessness," said Lt. Jessica Gabe of the Delaware River Port Authority Police Department. "That’s how we make a difference."

Another big change is also coming to the roads this summer. Paul Miller's Law goes into effect in Pennsylvania on June 5. The law bans handheld cell phone use while driving.

DNA links Mantua Township man to cold case murders of 2 Camden County women

DNA evidence has led detectives to identify Francis T. Schooley, a Mantua Township man who died in 2000, as the person responsible for the murders of Marebeth Welsh in 1993 and Jennifer Persia in 1994, according to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay.

The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office established a full-time Homicide Cold Case Unit in January 2024 to focus on cases that could benefit from new DNA testing and genetic genealogy. Investigators resubmitted evidence from both murders for advanced DNA analysis, which eventually matched the same unknown male profile to both crime scenes.

Authorities say Schooley was identified as the source of the DNA after kinship testing with his family members. The analysis showed it was at least 4.8 million times more likely that the DNA came from a child of Schooley’s parent than from an unrelated person, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

Detectives determined Schooley had connections to both victims through past work and acquaintances. He would have been charged in both murders if he were still alive, officials said.

"Thanks to remarkable advances in DNA technology and diligent detective work, we have finally been able to bring answers to two families who have waited decades for justice," Prosecutor MacAulay said.

In November 1993, police found 24-year-old Marebeth Welsh dead on a Camden sidewalk. She had been strangled and sexually assaulted, and evidence at the scene suggested she was placed there after her death. DNA from her clothing did not match any immediate suspects at the time.

In April 1994, officers responded to a home in Magnolia and found 16-year-old Jennifer Persia with multiple stab wounds and a ligature around her neck. Blood evidence at the scene belonged to an unknown male, but no match was found in national databases for years.

Both cases remained unsolved for decades until recent advances in DNA technology and genetic genealogy allowed investigators to identify Schooley as the suspect.

Authorities say the Magnolia community was deeply affected by Persia’s death. Magnolia Police Chief John Huston said, "Our hearts are with her family, and while the results of this investigation cannot bring her back, we hope it offers them a measure of peace."

"These cases never left the minds of our investigators, even as the years passed. We must commend Sergeant Dennis Convery and Detective Daniel Crawford for their unwavering commitment to the truth. No matter how much time passes, we will continue to pursue justice for every victim," said MacAulay.

A gazebo in Albertson Park in Magnolia is dedicated to Jennifer Persia, serving as a place for the community to remember her.

Magnolia Police Chief John Huston said, "Residents can take some comfort in knowing that both the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and the Magnolia Police Department remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice and will continue working tirelessly until cases like this are solved."

The investigation included multiple rounds of DNA testing, interviews with family members, and kinship analysis by several forensic labs. The process involved resubmitting evidence, working with Parabon Nanolabs, and analyzing genetic relationships to confirm Schooley’s identity as the suspect.

Authorities have not detailed Schooley’s motive or whether he may be linked to other unsolved cases. It is also unclear if any additional suspects are being sought or if further charges could be considered in related investigations.

Man walking to corner store struck by stray gunfire from fight-turned-shooting in Philadelphia

Investigators in Philadelphia say a man walking to a corner store Wednesday night was struck by stray gunfire when a fight at a nearby party escalated into a shooting.

Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to Ditman and Knorr streets around 10 a.m. for reports of a shooting.

Police found a 24-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the calf at a property on the 4500 block of Langshore Avenue.

Police believe the victim was walking to a corner store when he was struck by stray gunfire from a fight at a nearby house party.

Police say a 33-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were injured during the fight-turned-shooting that spilled outside the house.

They were brought to Frankford Hospital South for treatment. All three shooting victims are said to be in stable condition.

Police have not reported any arrests and have not provided a description of a possible suspect.

Philadelphia partial building collapse: Video shows Grays Ferry parking garage cave in

Doorbell camera footage captured the beginning of a seven-floor partial building collapse at a parking garage in Philadelphia, leaving one person dead, two injured, and two others missing.

A crisp and sunny early spring day in Philadelphia was abruptly interrupted when part of a parking garage pancaked to the ground.

Two people were killed in the partial collapse of the garage that's still under construction near 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue.

Doorbell camera footage from a house about a block away from the parking garage captured the sudden start of the collapse, each floor crashing onto the one below it.

Two people were rescued from the rubble and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Two other people are unaccounted for and considered missing, according to Mayor Cherelle Parker.

Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson said the search and rescue would be a ‘protracted’ operation as crews first needed to stabilize the structure before the rescue efforts could continue.

The parking garage was a seven-story structure under construction for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Eight permits were properly issued, all inspections were up-to-date, and the general contractor is HSC Builders and Construction, according to Mayor Parker.

Officials say the collapse was contained to the 30th Street side of the stair tower, where all seven levels of the stair system failed.

The subcontractor, Precast Services Incorporated, was installing precast concrete floor decking and roof segments when a roof segment failed, causing a progressive collapse, Parker said.

The Philadelphia Fire Department controls the scene, and the Licenses and Inspections (L&I) compliance and safety division has started an investigation.

The owner's engineer is on site for further assessment, and special inspections were assigned to Valerie Moody of Guy Construction Monitoring Services, according to Parker.

The structure remains unstable, and engineers are working to make it safe for first responders to enter.

"We cannot give you a timeframe on how long it's going to take, because as we move through this process, we are constantly reevaluating the structure and making plans to make sure that we can, conduct this operation as safely as possible," said Thompson.

Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson confirmed that the Philadelphia Fire Department, police, and other agencies remain on site. "We will not stop until we have looked through every part of this affected structure to ensure that everyone is accounted for," said Thompson.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia sent FOX 29 the following statement:

"Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is aware of a serious construction incident at our parking garage construction site on 3000 Grays Ferry Avenue in Philadelphia. We are prioritizing the safety of the construction workers at this time and working closely with the City of Philadelphia and our construction partners. We will share additional information as it becomes available."

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted the following message to his X account:

3 dead, including child, in Chester rowhome fire; hoarding slowed rescue: officials

Three people, including a child, died and one man was hospitalized after a rowhome fire broke out in Chester early Wednesday, according to fire officials.

Firefighters said they arrived at the 200 block of Jeffrey Street around 2:15 a.m. and had trouble getting into the home because of hoarding conditions.

Fire officials say the blaze started while many people were sleeping and quickly destroyed most of the rowhome, leaving only the front of the house standing.

Three people, including a child, died in the fire and a man in his seventies was rescued and taken to the hospital with severe injuries, according to Chester Fire Commissioner John-Paul Shirley.

The victims included the rescued man’s wife, their daughter who was in her thirties, and his granddaughter, who fire officials say was only 11 and in the sixth grade.

"I started yelling oh the house on fire, the house on fire," said Breon Triggs, a neighbor who captured video of the flames and heavy smoke just after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"I’m still sad about it because if I was in that predicament like I’d be sad," said Triggs.

Firefighters responded within four minutes of being dispatched and faced heavy flames and hoarding conditions inside the home, according to Shirley.

Crews brought the fire under control within two hours, but structural collapse forced them to bring in heavy equipment to recover the bodies of the three family members.

"I don’t even know what to say to that that’s crazy cause I never they don’t even bother nobody that’s sad," said Anthony Brooks, a neighbor.

Mayor Stefan Roots said he had met the family’s daughter several times at the local community center and had a personal connection with the family after helping remove a blighted property next door.

"It was a very honest, very sincere relationship and to see it and just as quickly like after what we both considered he and I a big victory it was really heartbreaking," said Roots. The Chester Fire Department is working with county and state partners to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.

The American Red Cross provided emergency support to people impacted by the fire, including comfort, emotional care, financial assistance, access to health services and referrals to local resources.

The Red Cross said their support is aimed at helping the family begin their recovery after the fire.

Officials have not yet determined what caused the fire or released the names of the victims.

Police warn of pickpocketers at Tredyffrin Township shopping center

Police in Tredyffrin are warning shoppers to be on the lookout for suspected pickpocketers plaguing one local shopping center.

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department in a social media post said they have received reports of suspected pickpocketing at the Gateway Shopping Center.

Police say pickpocketing has been reported at Trader Joe’s, TJ Maxx and Panera Bread in the Gateway Shopping Center.

Investigators say individuals may attempt to distract shoppers by starting a conversation while an accomplice targets unattended purses, wallets, or shopping carts.

Police say customers have reported these thefts at multiple stores in the shopping center. Officers are reminding everyone to stay alert and take extra care with their belongings.

"It's disheartening. It really is. you know, you would hope you could go shopping and not have to worry about that kind of thing," said Cheryl Hutsell of West Chester.

"It's a little surprising given where we live, but you're also pretty close to the highway and easy access in and out, so you always have to be aware," said Kevin Capuzzi of Downingtown.

"It is easy to get distracted, especially when people are sweet and so nice, so it is alarming, because it can happen anywhere, and coming out of a store like Trader Joe's, I'm just, everyone is so nice there, you're also thinking your guard is down," said Carrie Whightman of Charlestown.

Angela Grampp of West Chester said, "I do try to be careful of it, especially around the holidays when things are crazy." She added, "I will definitely be mindful and will be telling all my friends about this too."

Police say if you notice any suspicious activity or are a victim of pickpocketing, notify store staff and police immediately.

Shoppers in the area say they are surprised and concerned about the thefts, especially given the location and the sense of safety many feel at the shopping center. Some admitted they could have been easy targets, while others say they will be more careful in the future.

Many customers said they often leave their purses in their carts or carry minimal valuables, but now plan to be more cautious after hearing about the recent thefts.

Police say these thefts can happen quickly and often go unnoticed until after the fact.

Shoppers are encouraged to stay vigilant and take steps to protect their belongings, especially in busy shopping areas.

Authorities stress the importance of reporting any suspicious behavior to help prevent future thefts and keep the community safe.

Police are urging shoppers to take precautions to stop themselves from being a potential target.

They suggest not leaving carts unattended and keeping valuables secure and out of easy reach.

Shoppers are also urged to keep purses zipped and in your possession at all times.

Police have not released information about any suspects or arrests in connection with these thefts. It is unclear how many thefts have occurred or if surveillance footage is available.

1 dead, 2 unaccounted for in Philadelphia parking garage collapse; search ongoing

Emergency crews are conducting search and rescue operations following a partial collapse of a parking garage in Philadelphia’s Grays Ferry neighborhood that has resulted in one death and two people unaccounted for, according to Mayor Cherelle L. Parker.

Officials responded to reports of a partial collapse of a seven-story garage that was under construction at 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue around 2:17 p.m. Wednesday.

In an update Wednesday, Mayor Cherelle Parker announced one person was rescued and taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Fire Commissioner Thompson said two other people were rescued and treated at a nearby hospital.

Two other people are still unaccounted for and are considered missing, Mayor Parker said.

Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson says responding firefighters immediately began search and rescue operations at the site and that the operation is still ongoing.

Thompson said the search and rescue would be a ‘protracted’ operation as crews first needed to stabilize the structure before the rescue efforts could continue.

The area surrounding the collapse is closed off, and the shopping plaza nearby will remain shut down for at least 24 hours, First Deputy Police Commissioner John Stanford said. "The best thing you can do is to stay away from the location and pray for everyone that's involved in this situation," said Stanford.

Deputy Managing Director Dominic Mireles emphasized that the city is treating this as a major incident, with protocols in place for a comprehensive response.

"There will be some level of community impact to the daily commute and to business activity around here," said Mireles.

Residents in the area are advised to seek assistance if needed by calling 988 for trauma care, and to follow official city social media accounts for updates.

City officials stress transparency and community safety

The collapse has led to significant disruptions in South Philadelphia, including road closures and business shutdowns.

City officials are prioritizing public safety and transparency as the investigation continues.

"We will empower the tool of transparency. And my job as mayor is to ensure that the facts as I know them, that those facts are communicated to you, our citizens," said Parker.

The city is working closely with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and state officials to investigate the cause of the collapse and ensure accountability.

"The city will investigate this garage collapse thoroughly and efficiently to learn all of the relevant facts of this terrible tragedy, and we will continue to communicate directly with the people of Philadelphia," said Parker.

Community members are urged to avoid the area, respect the barriers in place, and rely on official sources for information.

Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson shared the following statement with the public:

The identity of the person killed in the collapse is unknown at this time. Officials have not yet determined the exact cause of the collapse or how long the search and rescue operation will take.

The identities of the missing individuals have not been released, and the timeline for reopening the affected area remains uncertain.

South Jersey launches summer events for America's 250th birthday

South Jersey leaders are rolling out a full calendar of summer events as the region prepares for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, according to officials.

South Jersey’s summer celebration plans

Officials unveiled "South Jersey 250," a series of Semiquincentennial events including concerts at Wiggins Park, special tours on the Battleship New Jersey, and historic walking tavern tours in Haddonfield.

Louis Cappelli Jr., director commissioner of Camden County, said, "We are hoping our hotels are filled. Our restaurants are filled. There will be visitors coming to this area throughout the entire year for many different tremendous events and we want to capitalize on this as much as possible"

The events are designed to draw attention and visitors from Philadelphia and beyond, with colonial town criers helping to promote the festivities across the river.

Boosting tourism and local business

Michael Snyder, director of Business South Jersey, said, "There’s only so many hotel rooms and so many short-term rentals that are available in the city. In our region, Camden, Burlington, Gloucester County and Salem County, we have over 10,000 rooms available.

Officials say the influx of tourists is expected to benefit hotels, restaurants, and other local businesses throughout the year.

Although hotel rooms and tourists are good for the local economy, officials say it’s also an opportunity for a history lesson on South Jersey’s role in the Revolutionary War.

Highlighting South Jersey’s Revolutionary War history

From Washington’s Crossing to the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, officials want to spotlight the hundreds of military engagements that took place on New Jersey soil.

Chris Perks, president of the Camden County Historical Society, said, "Most people are too busy living their lives trying to pay their bills to enjoy the history that gives so much context to the lives we lead today."

Organizers hope the Semiquincentennial will encourage more people to learn about South Jersey’s sometimes overlooked contributions to the nation’s founding.

Click here to view the full schedule of events.

Family, neighbors react after 13-year-old killed at West Oak Lane basketball court

Police say a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed Tuesday night near a basketball hoop in West Oak Lane, and a 14-year-old boy was also wounded. The family of the boy is speaking out as the community mourns.

Family and neighbors react to deadly shooting on basketball court

Police say they were called to the 7100 block of North 19th just before 9:00 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a shooting near a basketball hoop.

When officers arrived, they found a 13-year-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds to his back and shoulder and a 14-year-old boy shot in both legs.

Both teenagers were taken by police to Einstein, where the 13-year-old was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old was placed in stable condition.

Investigators believe an altercation broke out during the basketball game, according to police.

Neighbor Rayna Jenkins said, "I seen the three kids out here arguing. They’re just kids so I didn’t pay it any attention and maybe two to three minutes later, I heard all these…what sounded like firecrackers." Jenkins also said, "I heard the little boy that got shot in the legs. I heard him screaming for help."

The family of the 13-year-old boy, Amir Akers, gathered to remember him.

"Amir was a great kid. He gave the best hugs. What could I say about my baby?" said Wanda Harper, maternal grandmother. Della Allen-Sumpter, paternal grandmother, said, "He was an awesome boy. He was a good boy. He was kind. He didn’t have any enemies. We can’t even understand what happened."

Neighbors and community leaders are expressing their grief.

Rev. Emile Stanton, pastor at Grace United Methodist Church, said, "13 years. His life was cut down. He hasn’t even lived yet."

Police say the shooting has left the West Oak Lane community shaken as they continue to investigate what led up to the violence.

The shooting happened during what police say was a basketball game that turned into an argument.

The family says Amir was supposed to be on a class trip that day.

"He was supposed to be on a class trip today, but instead he’s laying on a slab at Einstein," said Gregory Akers, grandfather.

Gregory Akers also said, "This is a very senseless killing. For no reason at all." he added, "It’s not right. For this to happen like that?"

Neighbors say the tragedy has deeply affected the tight-knit community, with many struggling to process the loss.

Police have not said who fired the shots or whether anyone is in custody.

The investigation into what exactly led to the shooting is ongoing.

Collingdale home fire, burglary, and police standoff under investigation: DA

Police and fire crews responded overnight to a home on Rhodes Avenue in Collingdale after a reported burglary and fire, according to neighbors and scanner audio. The Delaware County District Attorney’s Criminal Investigations Division remained at the scene Wednesday.

Authorities focused on a home on Rhodes Avenue after neighbors reported heavy police and fire activity overnight.

Scanner audio described a burglary in progress with two armed men inside, and the house was believed to be empty at the time.

"Kind of relieved that it’s over but it was really scary as it was going," said Shawnae Lane, a neighbor.

"I saw the cops come up first, some SWAT teams came up afterwards and everything and next thing I know the fire trucks came. This house was on fire and I saw smoke coming right out the top of the house so they wouldn’t allow us to come up and actually see what was going on," said Christopher Harrold, a neighbor.

The man who alerted police said his brother leases the home, and it was his brother’s girlfriend who received a notification about suspicious activity.

The man who contacted police said he and others watched the break-in unfold on a ring camera.

"As we are watching them on the ring camera, someone called the police, alerted them to what was going on and the police came surrounded the house to make sure the people that was inside didn’t go outside," he said.

He added that his brother, Michael Robinson, is currently in jail in Texas and the home was empty at the time. Robinson was arrested in February near Radnor Middle School and extradited on a sexual assault charge involving a minor in Texas, which his brother says he is innocent of.

According to the brother, a fire started in the house as police tried to get the suspects out.

"It started at 9:30. They didn’t shoot the tear gas or smoke bombs until about 1:30 2 o’clock. after they did that, the house caught on fire, fire department came and put it out and they said that someone didn’t make it in the basement…," he said.

Neighbors described the situation as unusual for their community. "To hear that in my neighborhood it’s a tough pill to swallow, but I don’t know what to say because around here we are not used to that type of violence…," said Harrold.

Police and investigators remained at the scene Wednesday, April 8, continuing their work on the case.

Authorities have not released information about injuries, arrests or the identities of the suspects.

It is unclear what caused the fire or if anyone was found in the basement.
