They say the mayor has the power to make the decision without legislative action, and they are urging the mayor to act.</p><p>"Living along Aurora Ave right now is waking up to gunfire anytime between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. the other morning," North Seattle resident Peter Orr said.</p><p>Orr helped organize a march over the weekend that hundreds attended. They demanded city leaders do more to fight the surge in prostitution, human trafficking and shootings.</p><p>"The pimps are not taking a break and it’s ratcheting up, especially with FIFA coming to town that brings with it an extra wave of sex trafficking that's seen all over the world," Orr said.</p><fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader><p>Juarez represents the North Seattle neighborhood, where residents are calling on shutting down certain streets close to Aurora Avenue. Last month, residents erected metal planters blocking the roads, but the city took them down and, in its place, created another barrier. Residents say the city’s solution is not blocking the road effectively, allowing drive-by shootings and crime to spill into neighborhood streets.</p><p>Last week <a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/seattle-mayor-grilled-public-safety" target="_self" rel="noopener">during a forum</a> organized by City Club and moderated by FOX 13, Mayor Wilson was questioned about when the city would act on the roads. Wilson said members of her office were out in the area recently and they do see the issue as urgent.</p><p>"I totally understand why people put the barrier on the street. The issue is emergency access," Mayor Wilson said.</p><p>Wilson said the city must do a study to find a permanent solution and promised the study will be quick.</p><figure><img src="https://images.foxtv.com/static.q13fox.com/www.q13fox.com/content/uploads/2026/06/1280/720/vlcsnap-2026-06-09-17h37m02s272.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" width="1280" height="720"> <figcaption><div>Barriers put up on neighborhood streets bordering Aurora Avenue.</div> </figcaption></figure><p>"Right now, we can shut those streets down to ensure that people are safe now. That's just that point blank. They have the authority to do that. And then we can figure out, okay, what are the next steps," Hollingsworth said.</p><p>Juarez says the city doesn’t need a study.</p><p>Both pointed out the mayor <a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/weekend-car-bans-seattle-road" target="_self" rel="noopener">closed a 3-mile stretch</a> of Lake Washington Boulevard to cars during the weekends over the summer to make way for pedestrians and bikers.</p><p>"We closed down Lake Washington Boulevard, we closed down Pike Place Market for shoppers. We closed out Alki for street racing. We closed and we changed parking restrictions so RVs can't park parallel and take up parks," Juarez said.</p><p>Hollingsworth emphasized the human trafficking that’s happening now and the bigger concern when FIFA comes into town.</p><p>"The first thing I want to talk about is shutting the streets down. That is by far, the second thing is getting these 12, 13, and 14-year-old girls that are being raped and exploited from these pedophiles on Aurora needs to be addressed. And I know that a lot of us, these are black and brown girls on the street, and these are something that we're really, no matter what color they are, but I want to emphasize that," Hollingsworth said.</p><p>The council is in the process of working on legislation addressing the violence in Aurora, but says road closures are something the mayor should do immediately while they come up with longer-term solutions.</p><figure><img src="https://images.foxtv.com/static.q13fox.com/www.q13fox.com/content/uploads/2024/07/1280/720/ARORA.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" width="1280" height="720"> <figcaption> </figcaption></figure><fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="Dig deeper"></fts-yahoo-subheader><p>During Monday’s interview, Juarez indicated the stream of communication was lacking from Mayor Wilson, and that it was vastly different from the relationship between the legislative and executive branch.</p><p>FOX 13 followed up asking when was the last time Juarez had a direct conversation with the mayor over the phone or in person.</p><p>"I have never spoken to the mayor, she has never spoken to me," Juarez said.</p><p>Juarez clarified that she has spoken to Wilson in passing or in social settings, but has never had any direct policy discussions with the mayor.</p><p>Hollingsworth says the communications channel needs to improve.</p><p>"It needs to improve because the reality is, is that just because that communication might not be where it should be, doesn't mean that everyone else has to suffer. Seattle deserves a lot better," Hollingsworth said.</p><figure><img src="https://images.foxtv.com/static.q13fox.com/www.q13fox.com/content/uploads/2026/06/1280/720/vlcsnap-2026-06-03-21h35m17s703.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" width="1280" height="720"> <figcaption><div>Katie Wilson answers questions during a Civic Cocktail forum event hosted by Seattle CityClub and FOX 13.</div> <strong>(FOX 13 Seattle)</strong></figcaption></figure><fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="The other side"></fts-yahoo-subheader><p>Meanwhile, residents are also calling on stricter enforcement and want to see more from the city attorney’s office when it comes to Aurora.</p><p>Some are asking why City Attorney Erika Evans is not enforcing ordinances Stay Out of Drug Areas (SODA) and Stay Out of Areas of Prostitution (SOAP).</p><p>Evans  released a statement which reads in part:</p><p><i>"Our office will file sexual exploitation cases against johns for buying sex when officers bring us a case with sufficient evidence. Judges can still impose SOAP orders, and officers can still arrest for SOAP violations.</i></p><p><i>"Seattle has tried versions of SOAP for three decades. If exclusion zones were effective, Aurora would already be safer. With a combined 20 years experience as prosecutors, I and Criminal Division Chief Jenna Robert are focused on outcome-driven public safety policies. We only have limited resources and we need to use those limited resources wisely on things that work."</i></p><p>Evans is now pushing the mayor to fund a prosecutor who would be dedicated to getting guns off of Aurora Ave.</p><p>FOX 13 reached out to Mayor Wilson’s office about the call to immediately block the roads and we are waiting for a response.</p><h2>MORE NEWS FROM FOX 13 SEATTLE</h2><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/bellevue-onlyfans-house-suspect">Bellevue 'OnlyFans house' suspect charged with human trafficking</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/human-remains-chelan-county-woman-1986">Human remains found in Chelan County, WA identified as woman missing since 1986</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/ferguson-school-phone-ban">Phone-free WA schools? <content:encoded><![CDATA[<html data-server-rendered="true"><head></head><body><article><p><span><strong>SEATTLE</strong> - </span>Governor <a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/gov-ferguson-wa-police-numbers-dead-last" target="_self" rel="noopener">Bob Ferguson</a> has made a uniquely early legislative request announcement. For the 2027 Washington legislative session, the governor says getting phones out of classrooms will be a priority for his team. </p><p>Ahead of a more formal proposal in September, Ferguson spoke today about his intentions with the ban and his office's plans to tour the state to field viewpoints from students, parents, and educators this summer. </p><h2>How would the phone ban work in Washington schools?</h2><p>An "Away for the Day" policy would ban cell phones from kids between the first and last class bells of the day. This would be in effect for public K-12 schools in the state.</p><figure><img src="https://images.foxtv.com/static.q13fox.com/www.q13fox.com/content/uploads/2026/06/1280/720/vlcsnap-2026-06-09-15h02m56s564.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" width="1280" height="720"> <figcaption><div>Governor Bob Ferguson speaks at June 9 press conference to discuss phone bans in Washington schools.</div> </figcaption></figure><h2>Governor Ferguson's reason for a school phone ban</h2><p>A statement from his office reads, in part, "In the United States, 95% of teenagers have smartphones – and <a href="https://www.commonsensemedia.org/sites/default/files/research/report/2023-cs-smartphone-research-report_final-for-web.pdf?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">97% of these teenagers use them during school</a>. Studies show <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2829879?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">teenagers spend, on average, roughly a quarter of their school day on their cellphones</a> – more than 41 instructional days over the course of a school year."</p><p>Ferguson likened the future phone ban to banning cigarettes on planes. "There was a time when that was very common, right? Nobody thinks that's a good idea anymore," saying he is confident residents, parents, and school officials will agree with letting students focus on class instead of devices.</p><figure><img src="https://images.foxtv.com/static.q13fox.com/www.q13fox.com/content/uploads/2026/06/1280/720/vlcsnap-2026-06-09-14h56m15s423.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" width="1280" height="720"> <figcaption><div>Robert Eagle Staff Middle School Principal Zachary (Zac) Stowell</div> </figcaption></figure><h2>Seattle principal's reaction to proposed cell phone ban</h2><p>When speaking about a day when students left their phones behind for a camp, Principal Zachary "Zac" Stowell said he noticed kids that were "totally different students, you couldn't unsee it." </p><p>He continued, telling a story at the Tuesday press conference about a conversation with an eighth grade student on the phone-free day. </p><p>"I went over to this girl and said, ‘Who is this? This is not the person walking up and down the hallways,' she said ‘I can’t be myself at school, I can't, I'm always under pressure of having my picture taken. I don't want to present in class, someone may take a picture of me with my mouth open at lunch.'"</p><p>Students also spoke about their experiences directly with similar policies.</p><p>At Robert Eagle Staff Middle School in Seattle, a cell phone ban is already in place. "At our school we spend more time talking to each other, building friendships and relationships instead of texting someone who is right down the hall," Seventh grade student Zoe Taggart said. They admit it was a big transition, but the tradeoff was worth it. "We’re in school, we’re here to learn," Taggart said.</p><p>Julie Kennedy is the parent of both a 6th grader and a 10th grader. "To see the difference between my son’s experience, which was positive and wonderful but definitely dominated by technology, to see my daughters experience now where she is very much living the experience that they talked about where they are connecting and being more alive during the day," Kennedy said.</p><fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What's next"></fts-yahoo-subheader><p>Ferguson will announce a fully detailed proposal by September 15, 2026, with a target to implement the policy in schools one year later, in September 2027. </p><p>For the next three months, the governor will spend this summer traveling across the state to meet with stakeholders who would be impacted by this phone ban, including students and teachers. His team says they hope these conversations will inform them where limited exceptions would be necessary or useful.</p><h2><strong>MORE NEWS FROM FOX 13 SEATTLE</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/wa-teens-climbing-tacoma-bridge"><strong>Troopers arrest teens for climbing Tacoma Narrows Bridge</strong></a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/seattle-nurse-park-ranger-dies-alaska"><strong>Seattle nurse, US park ranger dies on duty climbing Mount Mckinley in Alaska</strong></a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/2-9-earthquake-oak-harbor"><strong>2.9 magnitude earthquake strikes near Oak Harbor</strong></a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/kittitas-deputy-felony-charges"><strong>Kittitas deputy arrested: Sheriff announces felony charges</strong></a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/phoebe-bridgers-seattle-tour"><strong>No phones allowed for Phoebe Bridgers concert in Seattle this fall</strong></a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/crashes-deputys-patrol-car-poulsbo"><strong>22-year-old crashes into Kitsap County deputy's patrol car</strong></a></p><p><i><strong>To get the best local news, weather and sports in Seattle for free, sign up for the daily </strong></i><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/newsletters" target="_self" rel="noopener"><i><strong>FOX Seattle Newsletter</strong></i></a><i><strong>.</strong></i></p><p><i><strong>Download the free FOX LOCAL app for mobile in the </strong></i><a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fox-local-live-news/id6443995100" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><i><strong>Apple App Store</strong></i></a><i><strong> or </strong></i><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fox.fts.android&hl=en_US&pli=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><i><strong>Google Play Store</strong></i></a><i><strong> for live Seattle news, top stories, weather updates and more local and national news.</strong></i></p><fts-yahoo-source format="html" text="<p>Information in this story came from the Office of Governor Bob Ferguson. </p>" title="The Source"></fts-yahoo-source></article></body></html>]]></content:encoded>

An additional 25 shelters are currently being manufactured and are scheduled to be installed later this month.</p><h2>Locally Made and Manufactured</h2><fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="The backstory"></fts-yahoo-subheader><p>The structures are manufactured in an Everett warehouse by Pallet, a <a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/home-explosion-kills-snohomish" target="_self" rel="noopener">Snohomish County</a>-based company founded nearly a decade ago. CEO Amy King and her husband smashed their two worlds together to find a solution. He brought the building expertise; she brought a background in medical and social services that manufactures rapid-response, non-congregate shelters designed to help unhoused individuals stabilize and transition into permanent housing.</p><p>Now, after building 148 sites across 136 cities nationwide, Pallet is finally bringing its innovative model close to home. This week, the company is launching Bayside Village, its first major partnership with the city of Seattle.</p><figure><img src="https://images.foxtv.com/static.q13fox.com/www.q13fox.com/content/uploads/2026/06/1280/720/vlcsnap-2026-06-09-19h11m25s360.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" width="1280" height="720"> <figcaption><div>Bayside Village tiny homes in Interbay</div> </figcaption></figure><p>The site features Pallet's 70-square-foot single-occupancy sleeper units, which cost roughly $16,000 to $17,000 each—fully furnished, delivered, and set up. Under a three-year land lease, the village functions as what King calls an "emergency room" for the unsheltered.</p><p>"If you're sick, you need a place to go to be assessed and figure out what you need, and then you move on to what's next," King said. "That's what we're trying to create in partnership with Seattle—these emergency rooms, and then eventually a hub-and-spoke model where people have a place to go based on what their needs are."</p><p>Unlike traditional, wood-framed tiny homes, these shelters are constructed using composite materials.</p><p>According to King, the composite design allows the structures to last for 20 years, whereas traditional stick-built tiny homes often only last for one or two uses. The materials are resistant to mildew, mold, and bed bugs, and the units can be pressure washed, repaired panel by panel, or relocated to different sites as needed.</p><p>The partnership between the company and the city of Seattle moved rapidly to prepare the site for occupancy.</p><p>"The whole process from start to finish has taken us about eight weeks to get to where we can receive residents, which is pretty fast," King said.</p><figure><img src="https://images.foxtv.com/static.q13fox.com/www.q13fox.com/content/uploads/2026/06/1280/720/vlcsnap-2026-06-09-19h11m51s519.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" width="1280" height="720"> <figcaption><div>An exterior view of Bayside Village in Interbay</div> <strong>(FOX 13 Seattle)</strong></figcaption></figure><h2><strong>The Reality of the Fentanyl Crisis</strong></h2><fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader><p>The CEO acknowledges the deep frustration taxpayers feel regarding the billions spent on the homelessness crisis with little visible return. However, she argues that unmanaged homelessness already costs taxpayers heavily through uncompensated emergency room visits, extra law enforcement, and street cleanups.</p><p>For King, the crisis of homelessness isn’t just a housing deficit or a data point. It’s a human struggle deeply tied to trauma, addiction, and what she calls "relationship poverty."</p><p>"When people say homelessness is a housing issue, that really frustrates me," King said. "The narrative for so long has been 'build more housing and homelessness will go away,' and that's not true. We now have a huge number of people that have been extremely traumatized. Putting folks with significant mental health and substance use issues into permanent housing without first addressing those issues is a death sentence for them."</p><p>She highlighted the rise of fentanyl over the last decade as a major disruptor which alters brain chemistry and makes recovery much more difficult. She advocates for a balanced middle ground between "housing first" ideologies and strict accountability models.</p><p>While regional agencies like the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) have historically focused heavily on permanent supportive housing due to federal HUD funding restrictions, King notes a growing, nationwide shift toward recognizing the value of transitional housing models like Bayside Village.</p><h2>Workforce Development and Beyond</h2><fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="Dig deeper"></fts-yahoo-subheader><p>What truly sets Pallet apart from other shelter manufacturers is its workforce. The company is, first and foremost, a workforce development program.</p><p>The Snohomish County company hires workers who have lived experience with homelessness, addiction, or incarceration. King said the company's foundational concept came directly from listening to individuals who had experienced homelessness and said they wanted non-congregate spaces to stabilize.</p><p>"We started the company primarily from a workforce development perspective," King said. "We really see the value in getting folks that are exiting those troubled systems back to work and back to self-sufficiency and working with purpose and meaning."</p><figure><img src="https://images.foxtv.com/static.q13fox.com/www.q13fox.com/content/uploads/2026/06/1280/720/vlcsnap-2026-06-09-19h11m40s787.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" width="1280" height="720"> <figcaption><div>Inside the manufacturing warehouse of Pallet</div> <strong>(FOX 13 Seattle)</strong></figcaption></figure><p>The Cohort Model allows employees to join Pallet for nine to 12 months. Workers are exposed to 22 different construction and manufacturing trades, provided with living wages, full benefits, and wraparound care before graduating workers into union construction jobs or positions at major local employers like Boeing.</p><p>"Part of the reason why our pallet is more expensive than the traditional tiny home is because we pay people to build it," King said.</p><p>She says hundreds of workers have cycled through the program.</p><p>"People need purpose, they need money, they need the ability to get back on their feet. Everyone that comes here gets a living wage, full benefits, wraparound care, and support," King said.</p><h2>Rethinking the Response to Homelessness</h2><p>While the Bayside Village site offers low-barrier shelter, King says providing a roof for someone is only one part of addressing a complex, evolving crisis.</p><p>King challenged the narrative that building more housing is the sole solution to the homelessness crisis, arguing the strategy must combine both housing and treatment.</p><p>"Housing first is an effective methodology when done correctly, and in the United States, we've done it wrong," King said. "Honestly, it's housing first, not housing only, and we've produced it as housing only. We need accountability programs for people who need them. We need housing first. We need low barrier. That's what Bayside is."</p><p>King says it's going to take a wide range of approaches to meet different needs across the community.</p><p>The shelters are meant to serve as temporary spaces, with the long-term goal focused on achieving stability through a combination of housing, treatment, and employment opportunities.</p><h2>MORE NEWS FROM FOX 13 SEATTLE</h2><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/bellevue-onlyfans-house-suspect">Bellevue 'OnlyFans house' suspect charged with human trafficking</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/human-remains-chelan-county-woman-1986">Human remains found in Chelan County, WA identified as woman missing since 1986</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/ferguson-school-phone-ban">Phone-free WA schools? "Everybody cleared it. I had the whole team read it, make sure it was right. It's good. Solid."</p><p>Smith-Njigba was originally sent an award for <i>Oefensive </i>Player of the Year, posting a reel to his Instagram page last month with the incorrect version. The shape of the "O" at the front actually made the award appear to read as "<i>Defensive."</i> </p><p>Smith-Njigba posted a caption saying "it's getting disrespectful at this point."</p><p>NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy issued a statement to The Athletic apologizing for the error.</p><p>"<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7291490/2026/05/19/jaxon-smith-njigba-trophy-offensive-player-of-the-year/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The league made the mistake</a>," McCarthy told The Athletic, while also noting a second typo on the trophy with ‘the’ and year' combined as one word. "We sincerely apologize to Jaxon for the error and are in the process of creating and shipping him a new trophy.</p><p>"Of course, like the teams he played against this year, we know how great an offensive player he is. We just had a problem spelling it."</p><p>With the misspelled award following a mispronunciation of his name by comedian Druski when he won the award just ahead of the Super Bowl in February, it's understandable for Smith-Njigba to feel some frustration after his monumental 2025 campaign. But with the proper award now in hand, Smith-Njigba is satisfied.</p><p>"I tried my best to stay focused and stuff like that on the game, of course. But now I have no feelings, no ways towards the NFL, Roger (Goodell), or Druski. I'll just take my trophy and accolades and all this stuff and chill at home," Smith-Njigba said.</p><p>The last 12 months for Smith-Njigba have been transformative for the 24-year-old receiver. Smith-Njigba led the NFL in receiving last year and broke the Seahawks' record books for single-season accolades, earning a first-team All-Pro selection in the process. The Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, and Smith-Njigba was rewarded with a new four-year, $168.6 million contract extension in March.</p><p>"First and foremost it's a blessing," Smith-Njigba said. "This year has been great. It's brought me a lot of great things, and things to learn and overcome and trophies and parades and stuff like that. So it's a blessing. It's been an amazing year. We're six months into the year, and I'm looking forward to the rest of it."</p><p>Smith-Njigba led the NFL in receiving with 1,793 yards on 119 receptions, setting franchise records in both categories in the process. Smith-Njigba joined Shaun Alexander as the only Seahawks to ever earn the Offensive Player of the Year award. Alexander was also the league MVP in 2005, leading the league in carries (370), rushing yards (1,880), and touchdowns (27).</p><p>Smith-Njigba’s 1,793 yards are the eighth-most by a receiver in a single season in NFL history, trailing only Calvin Johnson (1,964, 2012 Detroit), Cooper Kupp (1,947, 2021 LA Rams), Julio Jones (1,871, 2015 Atlanta), Jerry Rice (1,848, 1995 San Francisco), Antonio Brown (1,834, 2015 Pittsburgh), Justin Jefferson (1,809, 2022 Minnesota), and Tyreek Hill (1,799, 2023 Miami).</p><p>Given all the success of last year, Smith-Njigba said remaining committed to his process is the most important thing as he looks to follow it up this season.</p><p>"What I said last year, process over results, that's something that we live by and something that I want to perfect and grow as a player and as a person," Smith-Njigba said. "The offseason is great. Like I say each year, the offseason is great to just, for me, learn, grow as a person and a player. There is a lot of work to be done, so just understanding that and reaching for that goal is something that keeps me on track and motivated."</p><fts-yahoo-source format="html" text="<p>Information in this story came from FOX 13 Seattle reporting.</p>" title="The Source"></fts-yahoo-source><h2><strong>MORE SEAHAWKS NEWS FROM FOX 13 SEATTLE</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/third-bidder-emerges-seahawks-sale"><u>Report: Billionaire sports owner shows interest in Seattle Seahawks sale</u></a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/sports/derick-hall-happy-sign-extension-seahawks"><u>Not interested in testing market, Derick Hall happy to sign extension with Seattle Seahawks</u></a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/video/fmc-01jm9q1vr6pqrlf6">Seahawks locks down star defensive lineman</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/sports/russell-wilson-retirement"><u>Seattle Seahawks legend Russell Wilson announces retirement from NFL</u></a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/sports/seattle-seahawks-derick-hall-extension">Seattle Seahawks, linebacker Derick Hall working toward a 3-year contract extension</a></p><p><i><strong>To get the best local news, weather and sports in Seattle for free, sign up for the daily</strong></i><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/newsletters"><i><strong> <u>FOX Seattle Newsletter</u></strong></i></a><i><strong>.</strong></i></p><p><i><strong>Download the free FOX LOCAL app for mobile in the</strong></i><a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fox-local-live-news/id6443995100"><i><strong> <u>Apple App Store</u></strong></i></a><i><strong> or</strong></i><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fox.fts.android&hl=en_US&pli=1"><i><strong> <u>Google Play Store</u></strong></i></a><i><strong> for live Seattle news, top stories, weather updates and more local and national news.</strong></i></p></article></body></html>]]></content:encoded>

to be a sports bar.</p><p>The pub specializes in Belgian beers, a passion Linehan has had since he first visited the country on a backpacking trip.</p><p>Linehan said he believes Belgium produces some of the world's best and most interesting beers.</p><p>For a country of its size, he said, Belgium offers an impressive variety of brewing styles, from barrel-aged lambics to beers brewed by monks in abbeys.</p><h2><strong>Continuing a family legacy</strong></h2><p>For Linehan, the business is also a connection to his family's history.</p><p>He said photographs displayed in the pub once hung in his grandmother's pub in Ireland.</p><p>According to Linehan, his grandmother operated her own pub for 68 years.</p><p>That experience helped shape the Stumbling Monk, which he said was influenced by Irish pub culture while maintaining a focus on Belgian beer.</p><figure><img <content:encoded><![CDATA[<html data-server-rendered="true"><head></head><body><article><fts-yahoo-brief title="The Brief" items="[object Object]" isbrief="true"></fts-yahoo-brief><p><span><strong>SEATTLE</strong> - </span>The Seattle City Council is scheduled to consider a resolution Tuesday to address aging infrastructure and launch a major revitalization effort at the <a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/seattle-center-world-cup-broadcast-partner" target="_self" rel="noopener">Seattle Center</a> campus.</p><fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What we know"></fts-yahoo-subheader><p>The legislation requests that the Mayor direct a coordinated capital planning effort across multiple city departments to assess the 74-acre property's long-term needs. Council members intend to pursue a voter-approved bond measure to fund these capital investments, aiming to place it on the ballot by the end of 2027.</p><p>According to the resolution, major campus-wide public investment has not occurred at the historic civic asset since 1991, when voters approved a $25.8 million levy for the Seattle Center 2000 Master Plan.</p><h2><strong>Addressing Decades of Infrastructure Decline</strong></h2><p>A significant portion of Seattle Center's facilities and underlying infrastructure are more than 50 years old, dating back to the site's origin as the 1962 World's Fair. Preliminary assessments indicate that capital backlog needs are substantial and growing.</p><p>Many critical systems—including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems—are nearing or have exceeded their useful life. Without a long-term investment strategy, officials warn the city faces rising costs from emergency repairs, service disruptions, and facility degradation.</p><p>The resolution tasks Seattle Center, the City Budget Office, the Department of Transportation, Seattle City Light, and Seattle Public Utilities with identifying priority projects. Additionally, utilities will collaborate to advance projects that decarbonize campus operations, targeting competitive grants and state Climate Commitment Act funding.</p><h2><strong>Funding Modernization and Future Projects</strong></h2><p>While a bond measure is anticipated for 2027, the final bond amount could depend on funding from private and non-city sources. The city will also explore other funding options, including federal grants, public-private partnerships, and a partnership with Seattle Public Schools for an Armory renovation related to the Center School.</p><p>To move the modernization forward, the council requests that the Mayor's proposed 2027–2028 budget include sufficient appropriations to push key projects toward the construction phase. This includes achieving a 30% design milestone for the Seattle Center Armory modernization and launching public engagement for an expanded Veterans Memorial to honor all fallen and missing-in-action Seattle service members.</p><p>Future capital projects are also expected to advance labor equity goals by utilizing Community Workforce Agreements, apprenticeship programs, and priority hire provisions with union-compliant contractors.</p><h2><strong>A Critical Regional Economic Asset</strong></h2><p>Council members are emphasizing the urgency of the resolution due to Seattle Center's prominent role as an economic and cultural driver. An economic impact analysis shows the campus generated nearly $3.3 billion in total economic output in 2024, supporting 19,400 jobs and generating more than $37 million annually in local tax revenue.</p><p>The campus welcomed 11.3 million visitors in 2025, making it the most visited arts and cultural destination in the Pacific Northwest. It supports over 30 partner organizations and hosts major events, including an upcoming 39-day 2026 FIFA World Cup fan celebration.</p><p>While recent years have brought significant private investments to the campus—including Climate Pledge Arena, McCaw Hall, Fisher Pavilion, and the upcoming Memorial Stadium replacement project—the council notes that public spaces require renewed backing to ensure the campus remains viable for the next 60-plus years.</p><p>The full city council will consider the resolution during its regular meeting today at 2 p.m.</p><fts-yahoo-source format="html" text="<p>Information in this story comes from original reporting by FOX 13 Seattle.</p>" title="The Source"></fts-yahoo-source><h2><strong>MORE NEWS FROM FOX 13 SEATTLE</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/bellevue-onlyfans-house-suspect" target="_self" rel="noopener">21-year-old charged with human trafficking at Bellevue, WA 'OnlyFans house'</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/wa-teens-climbing-tacoma-bridge">Troopers arrest teens for climbing Tacoma Narrows Bridge</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/seattle-nurse-park-ranger-dies-alaska">Seattle nurse, US park ranger dies on duty climbing Mount Mckinley in Alaska</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/2-9-earthquake-oak-harbor">2.9 magnitude earthquake strikes near Oak Harbor</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/kittitas-deputy-felony-charges">Kittitas deputy arrested: Sheriff announces felony charges</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/phoebe-bridgers-seattle-tour">No phones allowed for Phoebe Bridgers concert in Seattle this fall</a></p><p><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/crashes-deputys-patrol-car-poulsbo">22-year-old crashes into Kitsap County deputy's patrol car</a></p><p><i>To get the best local news, weather and sports in Seattle for free, sign up for the daily </i><a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/newsletters" target="_self" rel="noopener"><i>FOX Seattle Newsletter</i></a><i>.</i></p><p><i>Download the free FOX LOCAL app for mobile in the </i><a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fox-local-live-news/id6443995100" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><i>Apple App Store</i></a><i> or </i><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fox.fts.android&hl=en_US&pli=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><i>Google Play Store</i></a><i> for live Seattle news, top stories, weather updates and more local and national news.</i></p></article></body></html>]]></content:encoded>
