Crete Looks to the Stars: “SPACE-Crete”, coordinated by FORTH, Secures Prestigious European Excellence Funding
The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) proudly announces a major distinction in the highly competitive European call HORIZON-WIDERA-2025-ACCESS-01-01: Teaming for Excellence. The SPACE-Crete proposal, coordinated by Panagiotis Tsakalides, Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete and Director of the Institute of Computer Science at FORTH, with a total budget of €35 million over six years, ranked 2nd among 61 proposals from across Europe and 1st among the Greek submissions.
The European Astronomical Society awards the Lodewijk Woltjer Lecture to Prof.Vassilis Charmandaris, President of FORTH
The Lodewijk Woltjer Lecture honours astronomers of outstanding scientific distinction and who contributed greatly to the promotion of astronomy in Europe.
The 2026 Lodewijk Woltjer Lecture is awarded to Prof. Vassilis Charmandaris (University of Crete & Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas, Greece) for his significant contributions to observational extragalactic astrophysics and his leadership in space infrared astronomy. The award presented to Vassilis Charmandaris, is named after the renowned Dutch astronomer Professor Lodewijk Woltjer, founder of the EAS and its first president

New Director of the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics of FORTH
Vagelis Harmandaris, Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the University of Crete, and affiliated Faculty Member at the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics of FORTH, was elected Director of the Institute on January 9, 2026 (Official Government Gazette: 495_ΥΟΔΔ_9.4.2026). The election was carried out by a seven-member Evaluation Committee appointed by the Ministry of Development and chaired by Mr. Konstantinos C. Zygalakis, Professor, Personal Chair of Mathematics of Data Science, School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh.
