Information Security

What is information security?

Information security focuses on protecting information from unauthorised access, loss, alteration, or disruption. It includes technical, organisational, and administrative measures that ensure the safety and reliability of data in systems, ERP platforms, cloud services, and integration environments. Today, information security is a core component of digital governance.

Key aspects

Information security is traditionally built on three core principles (CIA):

  • Confidentiality: Ensuring that only authorised individuals and systems can access the information.

  • Integrity: Preserving the accuracy and completeness of data.

  • Availability: Ensuring that information and systems are accessible when needed.

The discipline also includes risk management, incident response, business continuity, secure development practices, and access control structures.

History

Information security emerged alongside increased computerisation during the 1970s and 1980s. As organisations became more dependent on digital systems, the need for standards, frameworks and structured security processes grew. The rise of the internet and cloud computing further expanded the scope of security challenges and modernised the field.

In Microsoft environments

Microsoft technologies such as Azure, Entra ID, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Business Central embed information security into identity management, encryption, role-based access, auditing, and threat detection. Security is also integrated into DevOps practices through code analysis, automated scanning, and “security by design”.

Summary

Information security ensures that data remains protected, accurate and available. By combining technology, governance and proactive processes, organisations can build secure and resilient digital environments.
