Delroy Lindo is a British and American actor, and theatre director. He was born in Lewisham, London, England, to Jamaican parents, Enna/Ena Cynthia (Moncrieffe) and Ivan Lester Lindo, also known as Austin Stanford or Austin Ivan Stanford. His father was a machinehand. His mother was born in White River, Saint Mary, and was a nurse, who had just recently moved to England. In 1958, his mother went to work in Canada for several years, while Delroy stayed with another family in London. He then lived in Toronto, Ontario, for a time, before moving to San Francisco, California, U.S. His father also moved to Toronto in the 1970s.
Delroy is married to Nashormeh, with whom he has a son.
His surname, Lindo, is Sephardi Jewish, and is common in Jamaica. No Jewish heritage appeared in Delroy’s DNA test.
Delroy’s paternal grandfather was named Thomas Augustus Stanford.
Delroy’s maternal grandfather was named Henry James Moncrieffe.
Delroy’s maternal grandmother was Ida Laing (the daughter of Edward Laing and Emma Elizabeth Black). Ida was born in Saint Mary Parish or Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. Edward was the son of James Laing and Margaret Campbell, who was enslaved. Margaret’s mother was Louisa Thomas.
