Mechanical splices ULTIMODE FAST-MS1 are used for permanent connections of optical fibers without the need of employing fusion splicers. Low loss at the level of 0.1 dB is obtained thanks to advanced positioning of the fiber end faces by V-shaped grooves. The optical gel that is also used in the mechanical splice reduces the effects of imprecise cuts and a possible gap between the end faces.
The versatile design is used for splicing optical fibers with buffer coating diameters of 250 um (micrometers or microns) and 900 um, providing high performance connections of multimode and single-mode fibers.
The necessary tools needed for connecting optical fibers with the ULTIMODE FAST-MS1 L5550 mechanical splice:
Fiber Optic Stripper L5905
Fiber cleaver ODW-001 L5802
Dust-free Kim-Wipes L5913
IPA cleaner L5915
Fiber disposal container L5918

Using ULTIMODE FAST-MS1 mechanical splice
to connect fibers with 250 um buffer coating diameter
1. Preparation of ULTIMODE FAST-MS1 L5550. Locks should be placed on both sides (arms) of the body. For the 250 um fiber, insert the 250-holder into the arm of the body, with the narrower end towards the body, until you feel resistance.
2. Preparation of the optical fiber. Strip the 250 um buffer to 125 um cladding. The cladding of the fiber should have a length of 11.5 mm.
3. The prepared and cleaned end of the fiber carefully insert into the 250-holder placed in the arm, until you encounter resistance. Move the lock towards the middle to secure the fiber from dropping out.
4. After inserting and locking the fibers on both sides of the mechanical splice, push the latch that positions and secures them in the V-grooves.
Using ULTIMODE FAST-MS1 mechanical splice
to connect fibers with 900 um buffer coating diameter
1. Preparation of ULTIMODE FAST-MS1 L5550. Locks should be placed on both sides (arms) of the body.
2. Preparation of the optical fiber. Strip the 900 um buffer to 125 um cladding. The cladding of the fiber should have a length of 13 mm.
3. The prepared and cleaned end of the fiber carefully insert into the arm, until you encounter resistance. Move the lock towards the middle to secure the fiber from dropping out.
4. After inserting and locking the fibers on both sides of the mechanical splice, push the latch that positions and secures them in the V-grooves.
