Apple Watch Stuck in a Weird Loop? Simple Fix

I recently ran into a frustrating issue with my Apple Watch that, at first, felt like a software glitch with no clear escape. If your Apple Watch suddenly becomes unresponsive or behaves strangely, this experience (and solution) might save you some time. It worked for me, hopefully for you as well.

The Problem: Apple Watch Buttons Not Working Properly

Out of nowhere, my Apple Watch entered a strange loop with the following symptoms:

  • Pressing the Digital Crown would not open the App Icons (App Grid or List).
  • Pressing the Side Button showed an empty menu, with no usable options.
  • Holding the Side Button (power button) and choosing “Turn Off iPhone → Shut Down” didn’t actually shut anything down.
  • The screen kept showing “Cancel”, and nothing progressed beyond that.

At this point, the watch was technically “on,” but completely unusable.

What Didn’t Work

Before finding the solution, I tried what most people would:

  • Waiting to see if it would fix itself
  • Repeatedly pressing the Digital Crown
  • Attempting a normal shutdown from the power menu

None of these worked. The watch seemed stuck in a UI loop where inputs were partially registered but never completed.

The Solution: Hard Reset (Force Restart)

What finally worked was performing a Hard Reset, also known as a Force Restart.

How to Hard Reset an Apple Watch

  1. Press and hold both buttons at the same time:
    • Side Button (power button)
    • Digital Crown
  2. Keep holding both buttons for about 10–15 seconds
  3. Release them only when the Apple logo appears

That’s it.

After the Apple Watch restarted, everything returned to normal:

  • The App Icons opened correctly
  • The side button menu worked
  • The watch was fully responsive again

Why This Works

A hard reset forces the Apple Watch to reboot at a system level, bypassing whatever UI or software process is stuck. It doesn’t erase any data and is safe to use when the watch becomes unresponsive.

Apple generally recommends this only when:

  • The screen is frozen
  • Buttons don’t respond correctly
  • The device won’t shut down normally

Final Thoughts

If your Apple Watch ever feels “half alive”—buttons responding inconsistently, empty menus, or being unable to shut down—don’t panic. A Hard Reset can quickly bring it back to life.

Hopefully, this saves you the troubleshooting time I went through.
