If you want a desktop that remains invisible while you carry out your work, GNOME is the one. It never gets into your way while working. Hence it is still popular and default option for many despite many controversies about being GNOME3 (current iteration) being slow, resource-heavy, etc, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With all that said, let&#8217;s take a look at how you can install a GNOME desktop in bare metal Arch installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Install_GNOME_Desktop_in_Arch_Linux\"><\/span>Install GNOME Desktop in Arch Linux<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Part_1_Install_Arch_Linux\"><\/span>Part 1: Install Arch Linux<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have already Arch Linux installed, you can skip this step and directly go to the install GNOME Desktop section below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a quick Arch Linux base installation, follow the below steps. You can also visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debugpoint.com\/2020\/11\/install-arch-linux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this guide<\/a> for a complete tutorial on how to install Arch Linux as Dual Boot or in a virtual machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following steps are a straightforward legacy way of installing Arch. Follow the guide below for a more modern way of using the archinstall script. There are magnet and torrent links available. Once you download, write the ISO to a USB drive. And then boot from the drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.archlinux.org\/download\/\" style=\"border-radius:3px\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download Arch Linux<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are planning to install it as a virtual machine image via GNOME Boxes, virt-manager &#8211; then you do not need to write it to a USB drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Boot_and_Configure_Partitions\"><\/span>Boot and Configure Partitions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>After you boot from the Arch Linux iso, you have to run a series of commands to install the base system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, run the below command to find out the device identifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">fdisk -l<\/pre>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"714\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.debugpoint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/fdisk-l-before.jpg\" alt=\"fdisk -l before\" class=\"wp-image-6071\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.debugpoint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/fdisk-l-before.jpg 714w, https:\/\/www.debugpoint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/fdisk-l-before-300x121.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">fdisk -l before<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Then with the device identifier, run the below command to start partitioning your disk. Make sure to change <code>\/dev\/sda<\/code> as per your system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">cfdisk \/dev\/sda<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Select <code>label type = dos<\/code> in the next prompt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select the free space and choose option NEW from the bottom. If not, try using a USB dongle or wired internet connection which Arch installer automatically configure and detect. If you do not have a wired connection available, follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debugpoint.com\/2020\/11\/connect-wifi-terminal-linux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this guide<\/a> to configure a wireless or wifi network using Arch Linux installer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Run the below commands in sequence to install the base system in the mounted partition. This involves setting up your locale, language, add a login user, and setting up the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">arch-chroot \/mnt<br>nano \/etc\/locale.gen<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Uncomment the locale of your choice by removing # at the beginning. For this guide, I have chosen en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8. You can list the local timezones via the below commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre id=\"block-359fc0bd-6c1f-4e2f-bfd0-30794eb13030\" class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">ls \/usr\/share\/zoneinfo\nls \/usr\/share\/zoneinfo\/America<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Setup the hardware clock, create a hostname, and enable the DHCP for the internet using the below commands in sequence. You can change <code>\"arindam-pc\"<\/code> to any hostname as per your desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">hwclock --systohc --utc<br>echo arindam-pc &gt; \/etc\/hostname<br>systemctl enable dhcpcd<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to set up the root user password, create an admin user, and add the user in the sudoers file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the below commands in sequence.
